🌱🐘 Lime Trees for Peace Between Elephants and People: Slow, Steady, and Growing
A few months on from launching our “Lime Trees for Peace Between Elephants and People” initiative in Maningamuwa, Anuradhapura, the work continues.
The photographs here are from our farms in Maningamuwa, where we are putting our idea into practice: using Sri Lankan lime trees as living bio-fences to explore a sustainable, non-violent way of reducing crop damage by elephants.
🌱 Progress has been slow, but steady.
And then came one of our biggest challenges yet: drought. ☀️
The prolonged dry spell, amid an increasingly unpredictable climate, has made establishing and sustaining young lime trees an uphill battle, demanding extra water and vigilance from farmers and the project team alike.
This situation underscores how conservation solutions must be adaptive and grounded in the realities of rural life and a changing climate.
Our aim remains simple:
🐘 Reduce Human–Elephant Conflict
🌱 Create sustainable, non-violent solutions
👩🏽🌾 Strengthen rural livelihoods
🌿 Support biodiversity and climate resilience
🤝 Make communities partners in conservation.
We are conscious that there are no quick fixes. But we work towards a future where people and elephants can coexist more peacefully one lime tree grove at a time.
We are deeply grateful to the farmers, communities, donors and partners who are helping us make this possible.
📲 Want to help us grow this initiative??
Support us by donating a lime tree and maintenance..
Its LKR 450 ($1.5) per plant.
Your contribution helps us purchase, plant and nurture lime trees with farming communities – giving a small tree the chance to become part of a larger, long term solution for coexistence.
