At Akuratatha, we believe that education is the most powerful tool in the fight against poverty. That’s why we, a group of dedicated government-school teachers from the rural village of Akuressa, founded Akuratatha to uplift the younger generation by providing access to quality education. Our Community: Akuressa
Located in the Matara district, Akuressa is a rural village where traditional ways of
life are still cherished. Most families here are tea puckers or paddy field farmers, earning modest incomes. Despite their financial limitations, they lead happy and close-knit lives. Akuratatha is committed to supporting this community, ensuring that its children have the educational opportunities they need to build better futures. Become a Godfather or Godmother
Through our Godfather/Godmother Program, you can sponsor a child’s education. By providing funds for school supplies, uniforms, or extra tuition, you’ll be giving a child the tools they need to succeed. Advanced level students (17-18 years): $35/month
Ordinary level students (6-16 years): $25/month
You can directly support a child or contribute through Akuratatha, and we’ll ensure your funds are used to cover their educational needs. We also keep sponsors updated on the children’s progress.
2. Assisting Children to Go to School
Many families in Akuressa rely on seasonal work in agriculture, so their incomes can be unpredictable. During difficult times like droughts or illnesses, children’s education is often at risk. Your support helps keep these children in school by covering costs when their families cannot.
3. Creating Educational Opportunities
We run extra English classes for school children and leavers, aiming to provide these classes free of charge. Your donations help us cover the costs of teachers, materials, and the rent for our space. By supporting our work, you’re helping us equip the next generation with the language skills they need for better job prospects.
4. Volunteer as a Teacher
Our volunteer program connects passionate individuals with teaching opportunities in Akuressa. You can help children from low-income families learn English and gain access to the same opportunities as their peers in wealthier areas. How You Can Get Involved
Sponsor a Child: Become a Godfather or Godmother and support a child’s educational journey. Volunteer: No teaching experience is required—just a commitment to making a difference. Volunteers can work in schools as teaching assistants or join our after-school programs. This is also a great opportunity for university or college students to complete internships. We collaborate with universities like the University of International Cooperation North South in Belgium, and students can fulfill course requirements while making a lasting impact. Volunteer Experience at Akuratatha
