In , through the donation of Italian families, children benefiting from AVSI’s Distance Support Program can now enjoy a new community garden in Khanki, Duhok Governorate, a safe space for children and the Yazidi community to gather, play, and grow together.

Located directly in front of the local school in Khanki Sub-district, the garden was inaugurated through a planting activity where children planted flowers in the garden pods, adding their own touch of care and ownership to the space. As the first garden of its kind in Khanki, this initiative represents an important milestone for the Yazidi community, offering children and families a safe and welcoming environment to gather, play, learn, and heal.

As part of AVSI Syria’s ongoing efforts to support and strengthen vocational education programs and enhance their impact, preparations are underway for a new project focused on reinforcing a dual education program (Industrial apprenticeship), in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, the Aleppo Chamber of Industry, and with the support of donor agencies.

The initiative aims to equip students with practical and technical skills aligned with labor market needs, helping to expand professional opportunities for young people while strengthening the connection between education and employment.

We met Ali and Hussein in a school in Mount Lebanon shortly after they were displaced from the Bekaa region.

Interviewing teenagers about war, fear and displacement - when they should be focused on school, friendships and plans for the future - never feels right.

They spoke about uncertainty, leaving home behind, and the boredom and waiting that now shape their daily lives. But they also spoke about what they still hope for: continuing their education, finding stable work, and building a future in peace.

Their stories speak about displacement, but also about the effort to keep imagining a future beyond war.

AVSI Iraq's project coordinator, Jelan Jameel, talks about strengthening climate-smart agriculture and supporting farmers in Duhok on Kurdish broadcasting station AVA Media.

In April 2026, under the SAFE project funded by the Federal Republic of Germany and implemented by GIZ Iraq in partnership with AVSI, the Department of Agriculture in Duhok received 7 agricultural machines, including potato harvesting and cultivation equipment, onion and garlic planting machines, and other essential tools.
These machines will support farmers in Sumel and Shekhan districts by improving access to equipment that is often difficult to obtain individually. This distribution, together with other activities under the Strengthening Agriculture for Employment (SAFE) project, aims to strengthen the capacity of the Department of Agriculture in Sumel and Shekhan to deliver services, trainings, and technical assistance on climate-smart agriculture and climate change adaptation techniques for farmers.
