In light of the ongoing war affecting Lebanon and the region, the 9th edition of the Beirut International Women Film Festival adopts a refined and essential format.

From April 27 to 30, at Grand Cinemas – ABC Dbayeh, the festival will present its official film selection, placing the focus where it truly belongs: on the voices, visions, and stories of women in cinema.

At a time when many are displaced, when fear and uncertainty shape daily life, when youth question their future, and when a nation grows weary of recurring conflict, we choose to hold space.

Space for stories that reflect us, for voices that resist erasure, for cinema that listens, carries, and connects.

We are not untouched by this reality.
Like many cultural institutions, we too are tired… tired of trying to let art and words rise above the noise of war, tired of creating in the shadow of uncertainty.

And yet, we continue.

Because postponing culture until peace arrives would mean accepting silence and silence is not an option.

This edition is a gesture of presence, of responsibility, of continuity. A reminder that culture remains one of the last bridges we share, and that even in the most fragile moments, stories can still gather us, restore meaning, and keep hope alive.

Still here. Still telling.

CANADA, ARE YOU READY? 🔥

🚗 From Brussels to Beirut — a road once taken, now reimagined.
📝 2 lives. 1 journey. 4,000 kilometers through shifting borders, memories, and histories.
A cinematic voyage across time and terrain, where a daughter and father rediscover each other — and the meaning of home — in a world that’s constantly changing.

🎥 ONE NIGHT ONLY — Saturday October 4
📍 Exclusive Screening
⏰ 8:30
🎟️ Tickets are flying on Eventyy – grab yours before they’re gone!

Angie (34) takes her father Mansour (74) on the same journey he made 42 years ago from
Brussels to Beirut. The route, however, is no longer the same. On the 4,000 km once crossed, countries have disappeared and others were born. Some borders have faded, others have emerged. Dictatorships have risen and fallen. Wars were extinguished and others broke out, causing deaths, destruction and displacement. And Lebanon, caught between the sea and two conflicts, is no longer accessible by land.
The journey of rediscovering the distance between Europe and Lebanon becomes an
intimate discovery of the new father/daughter relationship beyond the borders of the
traditional family context they are usually framed in.

🔥 CANADA, ARE YOU READY? 🔥

For the first time, a collective cinematic response to war, loss, and resistance hits the big screen. 📝 18 letters. 18 directors. A powerful tapestry of personal expression in the face of destruction. A story of solidarity, urgency, and the need to create, even when the world is falling apart.

🎥 ONE NIGHT ONLY — Saturday October 4
📍 Exclusive Screening
⏰ 4 Pm panel talk - 5 Pm screening

After operation “Al-Aqsa Flood” and the start of the war on Gaza on October 7, 2023, I felt an urgent need for expression. I reached out to a number of Lebanese filmmakers and we formed a group of 18 directors. We agreed that each of us would write a letter, ex- pressing what we were feeling at the moment. After a draw, each director, with limited resources, transformed the letter they received into a short movie. All the filming was completed by the end of May 2024, before the start of the full-scale assault against Lebanon.

🇱🇧✨ It is with deep pride that we welcome the esteemed patronage of the Embassy of Lebanon to Canada for this year’s festival.

In a time when cultural expression is more vital than ever, this partnership reaffirms our shared belief in the transformative power of cinema, to preserve heritage, amplify diasporic voices, and build bridges between nations.

We are grateful for this recognition, and we remain committed to fostering a platform rooted in integrity, inclusivity, transparency, open dialogue and global Lebanese storytelling.

In a landscape where cultural legitimacy is often contested, we stand firm in our mission: to champion authentic cinema, protect creative freedom, and foster meaningful exchange between Lebanon and its global communities.
