UNIFIL statement (04 June 2026)

A UNIFIL peacekeeper died early this morning from critical injuries sustained when mortar shells struck his position near Marjayoun, southeastern Lebanon.

Two other peacekeepers, who also sustained injuries, are being treated at a medical facility in the UNIFIL base.

Soon after the incident that happened late last night, the critically injured peacekeeper was flown to a hospital in Beirut where he succumbed to his wounds.

We extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the peacekeeper who lost his life in the service of peace. Our thoughts also go out for the full and speedy recovery of the injured peacekeepers.

UNIFIL has launched an investigation to ascertain the exact circumstances that led to this tragic incident.

UNIFIL has detected an increasingly high number of trajectories and impacts in South Lebanon. The violence must end.

We reiterate our call on all actors to uphold their obligations under international law and to ensure the safety and security of UN personnel and property at all times, including by refraining from actions that may put peacekeepers in danger. We also call on relevant national authorities to investigate the incident, bring the perpetrators to justice and ensure criminal accountability.

Deliberate attacks on peacekeepers are grave violations of international humanitarian law and of Security Council Resolution 1701, and may amount to war crimes.

توفي جندي من قوات حفظ السلام التابعة لليونيفيل فجر اليوم متأثراً بجراحه الخطيرة التي أصيب بها جراء سقوط قذائف هاون على موقعه قرب مرجعيون بجنوب شرق لبنان.

ويتلقى جنديان آخران من قوات حفظ السلام، أصيبا أيضاً، العلاج في منشأة طبية بقاعدة اليونيفيل.

وبعد وقت قصير من الحادث الذي وقع في وقت متأخر من الليلة الماضية، نُقل الجندي الذي أصيب بجروح خطيرة جواً إلى مستشفى في بيروت حيث فارق الحياة متأثراً بجراحه.

نتقدم بأحر التعازي إلى عائلة وأصدقاء وزملاء الجندي الذي فقد حياته في سبيل السلام. كما نتمنى الشفاء العاجل والكامل للجنود المصابين.

وقد باشرت اليونيفيل تحقيقاً لتحديد ملابسات هذا الحادث المأساوي.

وقد رصدت اليونيفيل تزايداً ملحوظاً في عدد المقذوفات وسقوطها في جنوب لبنان، ويجب وضع حدّ للعنف.

نجدد دعوتنا لجميع الأطراف إلى الوفاء بالتزاماتها بموجب القانون الدولي، وضمان سلامة وأمن موظفي الأمم المتحدة وممتلكاتها في جميع الأوقات، بما في ذلك الامتناع عن أي أعمال قد تُعرّض قوات حفظ السلام للخطر. كما ندعو السلطات الوطنية المختصة إلى التحقيق في الحادث، وتقديم الجناة إلى العدالة، وضمان محاسبتهم جنائياً.

إنّ الهجمات المتعمدة على قوات حفظ السلام تُعدّ انتهاكات جسيمة للقانون الدولي الإنساني ولقرار مجلس الأمن الدولي 1701، وقد ترقى إلى جرائم حرب.

بمناسبة اليوم الدولي لحفظة السلام التابعين للأمم المتحدة، أقامت اليونيفيل حفلاً رسمياً في الناقورة تكريماً لمن يخدمون من أجل السلام في جنوب لبنان.

وقال رئيس البعثة اللواء ديوداتو أبانيارا: "نجدد عزمنا على العمل من أجل السلام، حتى في أصعب الظروف".

تأتي المناسبة هذا العام في ظلّ تصاعد حدّة الأعمال العدائية ومخاطر مقلقة لمزيد من التصعيد.

ونقف اليوم إجلالاً لذكرى زملائنا الستة الذين فقدناهم بشكل مأساوي خلال الأشهر الأخيرة؛ لن ننسى التزامهم وتضحياتهم أبداً. 🕊️

حتى في ظلّ هذه الظروف المعقّدة، يواصل حفظة السلام أداء مهامهم بكفاءة وتفانٍ. وشدّد اللواء ديوداتو أبانيارا على أن المسار السياسي والدبلوماسي يبقى الحلّ الوحيد الممكن للنزاع.

On the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, UNIFIL held a solemn ceremony in Naqoura to honour those serving for peace in south Lebanon.

UNIFIL Head Major General Diodato Abagnara: "We renew our determination to stand for peace, even in the most difficult conditions."

This year’s commemoration comes amid intensified hostilities and an alarming risk of further escalation.

Today, we paused to remember the six colleagues we have tragically lost in recent months. Their commitment and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Even in this environment, our peacekeepers continue to fulfill their mandate with professionalism and dedication.

Major General Diodato Abagnara stressed that a political and diplomatic path remains the only viable solution to the conflict.

UNIFIL is deeply concerned by the recent escalation in south Lebanon. Ongoing conflict is causing deaths, injuries, and widespread destruction. The situation is further undermining stability in the area.

Civilians continue to bear the heaviest impact. Hundreds of thousands have been forced to flee their homes, often at very short notice. Damage to homes, roads, and essential infrastructure is severely affecting daily life and recovery efforts.

Peacekeepers remain on the ground, monitoring and reporting to the Security Council. Wednesday saw around 670 projectiles fired — the highest level since 17 April.

We continue to engage with the parties to help reduce tensions and remind them of their obligations under resolution 1701.

تُعرب اليونيفيل عن قلقها البالغ إزاء التصعيد الأخير في جنوب لبنان. إن استمرار النزاع يتسبب في سقوط قتلى وجرحى ودمار واسع النطاق، مما يزيد من تقويض الاستقرار في المنطقة.

لا يزال المدنيون هم الأكثر تضرراً جراء هذه الأوضاع؛ فقد أُجبر مئات الآلاف على مغادرة منازلهم، غالباً دون سابق إنذار يذكر. كما أن الأضرار التي لحقت بالمنازل والطرق والبنية التحتية الأساسية تؤثر بشكل كبير على الحياة اليومية وجهود التعافي.

.يواصل حفظة السلام أداء مهامهم على الأرض، ومراقبة الأوضاع وإبلاغ مجلس الأمن بها. وقد شهد يوم الأربعاء إطلاق نحو 670 مقذوفاً، وهو من أعلى المعدلات المسجلة منذ 17 نيسان.

Support to families displaced from south Lebanon, now living in areas inside and outside UNIFIL’s area of operations, continues as they still face urgent daily needs.

Today, in Saida, UNIFIL helped deliver food to families who are currently living outside collective shelters.

At the “Action Against Hunger” warehouses in Hilaliyah, 600 dry food kits were handed over to southern municipal teams for distribution to displaced families.

UNIFIL Head of Mission and Force Commander Major General Diodato Abagnara joined mayors of Ma’rub, Sil’a, Dibal, Qana, Chahabiya and Wadi Jilo as they received the kits.

Working with local authorities and humanitarian partners, UNIFIL helps ensure aid reaches families where it is most needed.

Alongside peacekeeping, the mission contributes to efforts that ease immediate pressures and respond to community needs, within its means and capabilities.

يستمر دعم العائلات النازحة من جنوب لبنان، سواء المقيمة داخل منطقة عمليات اليونيفيل أو خارجها، في ظل احتياجاتها اليومية الملحّة.

اليوم في صيدا، ساهمت اليونيفيل في إيصال مساعدات غذائية إلى العائلات التي تقيم حالياً خارج مراكز الإيواء الجماعية.

تم تسليم 600 حصة غذائية إلى البلديات الجنوبية لتوزيعها على العائلات النازحة، وذلك في مستودعات منظمة "العمل ضد الجوع" في منطقة الهلالية.

وقد شارك رئيس بعثة اليونيفيل وقائدها العام اللواء ديوداتو أبانيارا إلى جانب رؤساء بلديات معروب، سِلعا، دبل، قانا، الشهابية، ووادي جيلو أثناء تسلّمهم الحصص.

تساعد اليونيفيل، بالتنسيق مع السلطات المحلية والشركاء الإنسانيين، في ضمان وصول المساعدات إلى العائلات الأكثر حاجة.

وإلى جانب مهامها في حفظ السلام، تساهم البعثة في الجهود الرامية إلى تخفيف الضغوط اليومية والاستجابة لاحتياجات المجتمعات، ضمن حدود قدراتها وإمكانياتها.

Civilians continue to bear the burden of ongoing violence and instability in southern Lebanon. Many families remain displaced, while damage to homes, roads, and other infrastructure affects daily life and recovery efforts.

UNIFIL peacekeepers continue to facilitate humanitarian access and support local communities within their means and capabilities, while monitoring developments on the ground and reporting violations of resolution 1701 to the Security Council.

Long-term stability depends on creating conditions that allow civilians on both sides of the Blue Line to safely return to their homes, lands, and livelihoods, and begin rebuilding their communities.

يواصل المدنيون تحمّل العبء الأكبر جراء استمرار العنف وعدم الاستقرار في جنوب لبنان. ولا تزال العديد من العائلات نازحة، فيما تؤثر الأضرار التي لحقت بالمنازل والطرق والبنى التحتية على الحياة اليومية وجهود التعافي.

يواصل حفظة السلام التابعون لليونيفيل تسهيل وصول المساعدات الإنسانية ودعم المجتمعات المحلية ضمن حدود قدراتهم وإمكاناتهم، مع مواصلة رصد التطورات على الأرض والإبلاغ عن أي انتهاك للقرار 1701 إلى مجلس الأمن.

ان الاستقرار طويل الأمد يعتمد على تهيئة الظروف التي تتيح للمدنيين على جانبي الخط الأزرق العودة بأمان إلى منازلهم وأراضيهم ومصادر رزقهم، والبدء بإعادة بناء مجتمعاتهم.

Today, UNIFIL Head of Mission and Force Commander Major General Diodato Abagnara briefed troop-contributing countries in Beirut on the situation on the ground in southern Lebanon, UNIFIL’s operations under resolution 1701, and our continued support to local communities.

He thanked them for their continued commitment to stability in south Lebanon and the region.

Together, they also paid tribute to the fallen peacekeepers and the sacrifices made in the service of peace.

قدّم رئيس بعثة اليونيفيل وقائدها العام، اللواء ديوداتو أبانيارا، اليوم إحاطة لممثلي الدول المشاركة في اليونيفيل في بيروت حول الوضع على الأرض في جنوب لبنان، وانشطة اليونيفيل وفقاً للقرار 1701، إضافةً إلى مواصلة دعمنا للمجتمعات المحلية.

UNIFIL peacekeepers continue to support southern families forced from their homes, both inside and outside the mission’s area of operations, with food, water, hygiene kits and other essential supplies reaching those in need.

French, Finnish and Malaysian peacekeepers have delivered assistance across southern Lebanon and Beirut, reaching families in Al Burghuliyah, Kafr Dounine, Abbassieh, Burj el-Shamali, Ma’rakah and Dib’al.

Despite months of hostilities, some residents remained in their towns while also hosting families displaced from further south.

Alongside efforts to help restore stability, peacekeepers continue supporting civilians affected by the violence however they can.

‎يواصل حفظة السلام دعم العائلات الجنوبية التي أُجبرت على مغادرة منازلها، سواءً داخل منطقة العمليات أو خارجها، من خلال إيصال مواد غذائية ومياه ومستلزمات نظافة وغيرها من الاحتياجات الأساسية إلى الأكثر حاجة.

‎قدّم حفظة السلام الفرنسيون والفنلنديون والماليزيون مساعدات في مختلف مناطق جنوب لبنان وفي بيروت، استفادت منها عائلات في البرغلية، كفردونين، العباسية، برج الشمالي، معركة ودبعال.

‎ورغم مضي أشهر من الأعمال العدائية، بقي بعض السكان في بلداتهم، كما استضافوا عائلات نازحة من مناطق أبعد في الجنوب.

‎وبالتوازي مع الجهود الرامية إلى دعم الاستقرار، يواصل حفظة السلام دعم المدنيين المتضررين من أعمال العنف بكل الوسائل الممكنة.
