Birth of the Foundation

On the occasion of the nomination of Beirut as the cultural capital of the Arab world of 1999, the Ministry of Culture commissioned a group of volunteers to organize an exhibition entitled "National Archives- Our Memory" under the auspices of the President of the Republic. On this occasion, the priceless copies of the collection of ancient manuscripts and printed matter emerged from the dark, along with a set of copies selected from the collection of newspapers and periodicals, official documents taken from archives, and the portrait gallery of prominent Lebanese personalities. Due to popular request, the exhibition was extended and lasted for more than two months. The important didactic role, that organizers wanted to mark this exhibition with, bore its fruits: the popular awakening it stirred surpassed all expectations. Events moved really fast that within few months the principle of a National Library Rehabilitation Project was officially adopted. The Ministry of Culture called for a new team of expertise supervised by Professor Perrin from the French National Library. The Lebanese National Library Foundation was created in the Council of Ministers, by virtue of a decree promulgated by the Ministry of Interior - notice 37/AD March 27th 2000.
