It’s a joy every family knows: the end of a school year, certificates in hand, and graduation photos. 🎓

For families from Gaza, education holds a special place. It is a way of holding on to the future. That is why it is an essential part of our holistic care for children injured in the genocidal war on Gaza, alongside treatment and recovery.

Today, we celebrate our children and all they have achieved. 🤍

This time, we watched Halima’s story unfold on screen.

At six years old, Halima suffered a severe brain injury and wounds across her body after an Israeli strike hit her residential neighborhood in Nuseirat, central Gaza. She was believed to have been killed and was buried, before she was found to be alive.

Two years ago, her journey took her from Gaza to Beirut via Egypt to continue her treatment, becoming one of the first injured children to receive treatment and holistic care through the Ghassan Abu Sittah Children’s Fund.

Today, her story is at the heart of “The Miracle of Gaza,” a documentary by filmmaker Hala Bou Saab.

Our thanks to filmmaker Hala Bou Saab and Al Mayadeen for bringing Halima’s story to the screen and sharing it with us in this special screening.

هذه المرّة، شاهدنا حليمة على الشاشة.

حليمة، الطفلة ذات الست سنوات، أُصيبت إصابة خطيرة في الدماغ وامتلأ جسدها بالجراح إثر قصف إسرائيلي استهدف حيّها السكني في النصيرات، وسط قطاع غزة. اعتُقد أنها استشـ-ـهدت، ثم دُفنت، قبل أن يتبيّن أنها ما تزال حيّة.

جاءت قبل عامين مع أسرتها من غزة إلى بيروت لاستكمال علاجها، فكانت واحدة من أوائل الأطفال الجرحى الذين قدّم لهم صندوق غسان أبو ستة للأطفال العلاج والرعاية الشاملة.

اليوم، قصتها في قلب وثائقي "معجزة غزة" للمخرجة هالة بو صعب.

Paolo Rozera, Executive Director of UNICEF Italy, visited the children receiving care through the Ghassan Abu Sittah Children's Fund at the American University of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC), where he learned more about their treatment and recovery journey under the ACWA Program.
Speaking with us during the visit, Rozera shared that the visit gave him the opportunity to witness firsthand the reality faced by children injured by the war and to see the work being carried out by UNICEF in partnership with the Ghassan Abu Sittah Children's Fund to help them regain hope that they still have a future.

The ACWA Program for children injured by the war in Lebanon is a joint initiative of UNICEF and the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health, funded by the European Union and implemented by the Ghassan Abu Sittah Children's Fund.

زار باولو روزيرا، المدير التنفيذي لليونيسف في إيطاليا، الأطفال الجرحى الذين يتابع صندوق غسان أبو ستة للأطفال مسار رعايتهم في مستشفى الجامعة الأميركية في بيروت، واطّلع على مراحل العلاج والدعم ضمن برنامج "أقوى".

وفي حديثه معنا، أشار روزيرا إلى أن الزيارة أتاحت له الاطّلاع عن قرب على واقع الأطفال جرحى الحرب في بيروت، وعلى العمل الذي تنفّذه اليونيسف بالتعاون مع صندوق غسان أبو ستة للأطفال، لمساعدتهم على استعادة إيمانهم بأن مستقبلًا ينتظرهم.

برنامج "أقوى" لعلاج الأطفال جرحى الحرب على لبنان هو مبادرة مشتركة بين اليونيسف ووزارة الصحة العامة اللبنانية، بتمويل من الاتحاد الأوروبي، وتنفيذ صندوق غسان أبو ستة للأطفال.

قد يبدو التفوّق المدرسيّ خبرًا مفرحًا لأيّ طفل وأسرة. لكن حين يكون المتفوّقان محمد وعبدالله، شقيقين في السادسة من العمر حملا جراح حرب الإ*با*دة على غزّة وبدآ من جديد في لبنان، يصبح للنجاح معنى آخر.

تقول أمّهما: "النجاح هنا انتصار".

ولهذا، التعليم ركن أساسيّ ضمن رعايتنا الشاملة للأطفال جرحى الحرب. فهو يحتلّ مكانة استثنائية لدى الأسر الغزّية، وكلّ طفل يعود إلى مقعده
يستعيد جزءًا من حياته، ويمضي نحو مستقبله.

Academic achievement may seem like joyful news for any child and family. But when the high achievers are Mohammad and Abdullah, two six-year-old brothers who carry the scars of the ge*no*cide in Gaza and have begun rebuilding their lives in Lebanon, success takes on an entirely different meaning.

As their mother says, “Success here is a victory.”

That is why education is a core pillar of the holistic care we provide to war-injured children. For families from Gaza, education holds a place of profound importance. Every child who returns to the classroom reclaims a part of their life and moves one step closer to their future.

How do we protect children in Lebanon from the impact of war? And how do we ensure that no child is left alone to face injury, displacement, fear, disrupted education, or interrupted access to healthcare?

At the invitation of the Parliamentary Committee for Women and Children, chaired by MP Dr. Inaya Ezzeddine, the Ghassan Abu Sittah Children’s Fund participated in an expanded meeting held at the Lebanese Parliament, bringing together representatives from UNICEF, the World Health Organization, the Ministry of Public Health, the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, and the Ministry of Social Affairs.

Joining the discussion on behalf of the Fund were Dr. Ghassan Abu Sittah, Co-Founder and reconstructive and plastic surgeon, and Darine Dandachly, Co-Founder and Executive Director.

Discussions emphasized that children affected by war need far more than an emergency response. They require access to healthcare, education, protection, psychosocial support, and a long-term pathway to recovery that safeguards their dignity and their right to a safe future.

The meeting also focused on identifying key priorities and existing gaps, and on developing practical recommendations to strengthen prevention, protection, recovery, and access to essential services.

Through our holistic model of care, we believe that supporting children wounded by war begins with treatment, but does not end there. Every child deserves to be seen, heard, and given a genuine opportunity to heal and rebuild their life.

كيف نحمي الأطفال في لبنان من آثار الحرب؟ وكيف نضمن ألّا يُترك أي طفل وحده أمام الجرح، والتهجير، والخوف، وتعطّل التعليم والعلاج؟

بدعوة من لجنة المرأة والطفل النيابية، برئاسة النائبة الدكتورة عناية عزّ الدين، شارك صندوق غسّان أبو ستّة للأطفال في اجتماع موسّع عُقد في مجلس النواب، وجمع ممثلين/ات عن اليونيسف، ومنظمة الصحة العالمية، ووزارة الصحة العامة، ووزارة التربية والتعليم العالي، ووزارة الشؤون الاجتماعية.

وشارك عن الصندوق الدكتور غسّان أبو ستّة، جرّاح الترميم والتجميل والشريك المؤسّس، ودارين دندشلي، الشريكة المؤسِّسة والمديرة التنفيذية.

أكد النقاش أن الأطفال المتأثرين بالحرب يحتاجون إلى أكثر من استجابة طارئة: يحتاجون إلى علاج، وتعليم، وحماية، ودعم نفسي واجتماعي، ومسار طويل من التعافي يحفظ كرامتهم وحقهم في مستقبل آمن.

كما ركّز الاجتماع على تحديد الأولويات والفجوات القائمة، والعمل على توصيات عملية تعزّز الوقاية والحماية والتعافي والوصول إلى الخدمات الأساسية.

ضمن نهجنا الشامل للرعاية، نؤمن أن رعاية الأطفال جرحى الحرب تبدأ من العلاج، لكنها لا تنتهي عنده. فكل طفل يستحق أن يُرى، وأن يُسمع، وأن يحصل على فرصة حقيقية للتعافي والحياة.

زارت النائبة الدكتورة عناية عزّ الدين، رئيسة لجنة المرأة والطفل في البرلمان اللبناني، الأطفال الجرحى الذين يتابع صندوق غسان أبو ستة للأطفال مسار رعايتهم في مستشفى الجامعة الأميركية في بيروت واطّلعت على مراحل العلاج والدعم ضمن برنامج "أقوى".

وشارك في اللقاء ممثّل اليونيسف في لبنان، ماركو لويجي كورسي، والدكتورة ماريان مجدلاني، رئيسة قسم العناية المركّزة للأطفال في المركز الطبي في الجامعة الأميركية في بيروت (AUBMC).

وحضر عن الصندوق الدكتور غسان أبو ستة، الشريك المؤسس ورئيس كرسي طبّ النزاعات في المركز الطبي في الجامعة الأميركية في بيروت (AUBMC)، ودارين دندشلي، الشريكة المؤسسة والمديرة التنفيذية لصندوق غسان أبو ستة للأطفال (GASCF).

وفي حديثها معنا، شدّدت النائبة الدكتورة عزّ الدين على أن جراح الأطفال شاهدة على همجية الحرب الإسرائيلية على لبنان، ودعوة إلى تحمّل مسؤولية جماعية ووطنية في مواجهة آثارها، ليس فقط عبر علاج الجراح المرئية، بل أيضًا الجراح غير المرئية التي تترك آثارًا نفسية واجتماعية عميقة على حياة الأطفال ومستقبلهم.

The Ghassan Abu Sittah Children’s Fund welcomed a delegation that comprised Manon Aubry, President of The Left Group in the European Parliament, and Member of the European Parliament Rima Hassan, alongside representatives from UNICEF and the European Union.

The visit was also attended by Beatriz Navarro-Rubio, Head of the European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO) Office in Lebanon. Representing UNICEF were Andrea Arslanian, Partnerships Specialist, and Diana Rujema, Health Officer.

Also present were Dr. Fadlo Khuri, President of the American University of Beirut, Dr. Ghassan Abu Sittah, Co-Founder of the Ghassan Abu Sittah Children’s Fund and Chair of Conflict Medicine at the American University of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC), and Darine Dandachly, Co-Founder and Executive Director of the Ghassan Abu Sittah Children’s Fund (GASCF).

The visit reaffirmed solidarity with children injured by war in Gaza and Lebanon and underscored the call for accountability for violations of international humanitarian law and crimes committed against civilians. It also highlighted the importance of safeguarding children’s right to medical care, recovery, and a life lived with dignity and security.

استقبل صندوق غسّان أبو ستّة للأطفال وفدًا ضمّ رئيسة كتلة اليسار في البرلمان الأوروبي مانون أوبري، وعضوة البرلمان الأوروبي ريما حسن، إلى جانب ممثلين عن اليونيسف والاتحاد الأوروبي.

وشارك في الزيارة بياتريس نافارو-روبيو رئيسة المديرية العامة للحماية المدنية وعمليات المساعدات الإنسانية الأوروبية في لبنان (ECHO). كما شارك من اليونيسف أندريا أرسلانيا، أخصائية الشراكات، وديانا رجمة، مسؤولة الصحة.

Children injured in Gaza and others displaced from southern Lebanon came together on one stage, their stories intersecting and their voices united in More Fragile Than a Spider’s Web.

Developed by Raja Bshara and directed by Kassem Istanbouli, the production was presented by the Lebanese National Theatre through a partnership between Tiro Association for Arts and the Ghassan Abu Sittah Children’s Fund.

Every child has a voice, a story, and a future filled with a love of life and the possibility of healing.

For many war injured children, recovery is not measured in days or weeks. It can take months, sometimes years, especially for children living with neurological and brain injuries.

In this video, Dr. Laith Haddad, Pediatric Neurologist and Epileptologist at the American University of Beirut Medical Center, speaks about the long journey of care for children from Gaza and Lebanon supported through the Fund’s programs in Beirut.

From rehabilitation and neurological follow up to the daily challenges children face as they continue to grow, healing does not stop once a child survives. It requires sustained care, consistency, and long term support.
