Save Beirut Heritage

Save Beirut Heritage Save Beirut Heritage In the 90’s, an initial census counted 1600 traditional homes and buildings in the greater Beirut. Save it on your phone, you will need it.

Today, we estimate the number to be close to 300 remaining standing structures. With the Ministry of Culture, we helped review 250 demolition permits and stopped the demolition of 150 buildings that were set for demolition in the past year alone. So in the past year, we would have lost almost a quarter of the remaining architectural heritage of Beirut. The only thing that can save Beirut today is

a genuine popular awakening; something that failed to happen in the 1990’s. We hope that Save Beirut Heritage can become a center around which those who are grieving the death of Beautiful Beirut can gravitate and find comfort. While our lobbying action has been quite efficient, the pace of demolition has become ferocious. We are afraid that soon, speculation and greed will take over the last standing institutions that are trying to defend our shared history. There are virtually no laws that specifically protect old buildings. There is only an ill-adapted law that targets antiquities. This law dates from the French mandate and hasn’t been updated in over 80 years. There is also a ministerial decree that states that every demolition permit must be cosigned by the ministry of culture. Therefore giving power to the ministry to stop the demolition of traditional homes. But there is nothing that can guarantee the long-term survival of the few remaining traditional homes in Beirut except the tenacity and will of its inhabitants. Furthermore, the demolition of old buildings is currently illegal. if you see anything urgent, You can also reach us 24/7 on our own hotline on 71411883. We also encourage everyone to photograph and film any vandalism act they see in addition to reporting it. Also, send your photos of endangered homes to [email protected] or send us a message on the page. Things can and will be done!

Save Beirut Heritage supports Al-Naqaba Tantafid for the second round of the elections of the Order of Engineers and Architects THIS SUNDAY.

After the major win of three weeks ago, when parties of the Revolution crushed the Sulta’s candidates for the election of the delegates, it is now time to elect the OEA President and the majority of the Majless.

The OEA can be an important ally in our fight to save Beirut’s heritage. It can be a major relay between the state and civil society, and a platform from which to lobby decision makers. The OEA president in particular, can have a role in the assessment of building permits and of local regulations.

The Heneine Palace was placed on the Watch List of the World Monuments Fund in 2016 thanks to the efforts of Save Beirut Heritage. This nomination gave suit to week of events in May 2017 that allowed people to discover this unique 19th century ottoman mansion, one of the most lavish and peculiar of Beirut.

Threatened by decades of war, misuse and negligence, it was further damaged by the Beirut 4th of August Port Explosion. The Beirut Heritage Initiative, of which Save Beirut Heritage is a member, is now fixing the damage roof in order to shelter the palace from rains and winds.

2 months since the explosion that endangered Beirut’s Heritage more than ever before.
We will pursue, expand and strengthen our efforts and partnerships, the work we’ve been doing for more than 10 years and that included the nomination and safeguard if the Heneine Palace, 4 years ago with the World Monuments Fund.

Today is our biggest fight and biggest challenge.

Many of Beirut’s historic buildings were damaged in the civil war and later abandoned. Many more have been lost since then to postwar development. Heneine Palace was placed on the 2016 to support the burgeoning preservation movement and to recognize that Beirut’s vibrant future will be enhanced by balancing development with the preservation of historic urban structures and spaces.

Today is the two month anniversary of the devastating explosion in Beirut’s port, and since the blast WMF has been in daily frequent communications with our partners on the ground in Lebanon, working to identify the best ways we can contribute to the recovery and support the rehabilitation of the city’s historic neighborhoods.
