We spent the past year talking to journalists, lawyers, and digital rights activists in Egypt, Iraq, and Tunisia about what it's actually like to do this work right now. Across all three countries, our research revealed that laws are designed to be vague, so people end up censoring themselves before the government ever has to step in.

It's not just legal pressure, either. Online harassment and doxxing regularly spill into real-world consequences, from office raids to physical attacks. AI-generated disinformation is spreading faster than anyone can debunk it, in a region with no real rules for dealing with it. And the funding that used to support this work is drying up, thanks to 2025 US foreign aid cuts, leaving organizations stretched even thinner while the risks keep growing.

Global Voices just published a piece by Jillian C. York on how the digital rights movement took shape in the region, and SMEX is part of that story.

Our executive director Mohamad Najem, who co-founded SMEX in 2008 and has led it to become the largest organization in the region, told her that, at the time, “Nobody gave [social media] a lot of attention in our region.” Our work was “a positive approach to social media, how we can democratize sharing information, how we can share more from civil society, change people’s minds, et cetera.”

Ray-Ban Meta glasses can look like ordinary eyewear, but behind them lies a long list of privacy issues for people in South West Asia and North Africa (SWANA).

In our new briefing, SMEX examines what these glasses can capture, where that data can go, and why people being recorded may have no reliable way to know when it’s happening.

Our Cybersecurity Technologist, Ragheb Ghandour, used a forensic teardown of the device, alongside research into documented surveillance and privacy risks across the region to provide recommendations for organizations and individuals in the SWANA region.

We provide a closer look at a technology that has received plenty of attention globally, but whose implications for SWANA have received far less scrutiny.

قد تبدو نظارات "راي بان - ميتا" أشبه بنظارات طبية أو شمسية عادية، لكنها تنطوي على مخاوف كبيرة متعلقة بالخصوصية للمستخدمين/ات في منطقة غرب آسيا وشمال إفريقيا.

في تقريرنا الجديد، نستعرض ما يمكن لهذه النظارات التقاطه، ومسار تلك البيانات، ولماذا لا يستطيع الأشخاص الذين يتم تصويرهم ملاحظة ذلك. أجرى خبير الأمن السيبراني لدى منظمة "سمكس"، راغب غندور، تحليلاً فنياً دقيقاً للجهاز (بما في ذلك تفكيكه وفحصه)، بالتزامن مع بحثٍ حول المخاطر المتعلقة بالمراقبة والخصوصية في المنطقة، وذلك لتقديم توصيات موجهة للمؤسسات والأفراد في منطقة غرب آسيا وشمال أفريقيا .

مجموعة "واتساب" الخاصة بأسرتك مليئة بالأمور التي تصعب على الخوارزميات فهمها: لهجتك العربية، والنكات المحلية وغيرها من العبارات التي لا يفهمها سوى أعضاء هذه المجموعة.
ولكن مع قيام الاتحاد الأوروبي بتمديد العمل بنظام "مراقبة الدردشات 1.0"، فإن الأنظمة الآلية المستخدمة لفحص الاتصالات الخاصة قد تسيء تفسير هذا النوع من المحادثات. هذا الأمر قد يعرض مجتمعات مثل المجتمع الناطق باللغة العربية ومستخدمي اللغات الأخرى لخطر كبير.
يسمح هذا النظام للمنصات بمواصلة فحص الرسائل الخاصة بشكل اختياري بذريعة مكافحة المواد التي تتضمن استغلالاً جنسياً للأطفال. كما أن هذا القانون قد يكون له تداعيات خطيرة على الخصوصية والتشفير وتوسيع صلاحيات المراقبة لتشمل الشركات الخاصة.
