Remy Rebeiz Young Heart Foundation Remy-George Rebeiz was born in Florida on July 18, 1992. He was the youngest child of John and Sylvia, and the brother of Diala and Dima.

RRYH’s goal is to help save lives of young people with undetected heart rhythm abnormalities (SCA); by raising awareness, offering free EKGs and CPR-AED trainings. Remy was a skilled athlete since the age of 6. He played basketball for a few years and won many trophies. But Remy’s passion was football. He wanted to become a professional player. He loved Arsenal & Real Madrid and his idol was Cristiano Ronaldo. Remy was a well-known player at both IC and AUB Varsity football teams (MVP in both), as well as the captain of “Football Club Beirut” (FCB). He co-founded FCB with his coach when he was only 16 years old so that young Lebanese football players could compete yearly in the Gothia Cup event in Gothenburg, Sweden. He proved to be a dynamic and enthusiastic team leader. At home, Remy was a great loving kid with a tremendous sense of humour who entertained friends and parents with his imitation skills. He lived a healthy life away from alcohol and to***co, cared a lot about his diet and never complained of any symptoms. Remy graduated in Economics from AUB and was awarded a posthumous BA degree with “Distinction”. Remy left us with a smile on his face. On March 23, 2013 he was going out to enjoy a family dinner when he collapsed. No one understood at that time what happened. He passed away on March 27, 2013.

Sudden Cardiac Arrest occurs when the heart stops beating suddenly so it stops pumping blood to the brain, the lungs and other organs. The victim is dead within minutes if he/she does not receive treatment.

قصة ريمي وعائلتنا تبين أهمية تخطيط القلب لجميع أفراد العائلة، عند وفاة أحد أعضائها الصغار بسبب توقف مفاجئ للقلب، أو سكتة قلبية.

كان ريمي بعمر العشرين عندما فقدناه بعد أن توقف قلبه فجأة! ما حصل له كان حالة جينية ووراثية، قاتلة للشباب بين عمر ١٢ و٣٥. بعد مراجعة الاطباء، تبين ان تخطيط قلب بسيط كان سيكشف هذه الحالة التي ليس لها عوارض. ولهذا لم يتم فحص قلبه خصوصا أن صحته كانت جيدة جدا.

طلب الأطباء ان يقوم جميع أعضاء العائلة بإجراء فحوصات وهنا كانت المفاجأة: والد ريمي وشقيقته يحملان "الجين" ذاته....وهذا الجين، موروث من جهة جدته. وبعد فحص عائلة الجدة، تبين أن اكثر من نصف أعضائها يحملون "الجين" نفسه! أما شقيقة ريمي، فقد اكتشفت انها نقلت الجين الى أحد أولادها.

هذه الحالات الجينية تنتقل من جيل الى جيل وقد تكون قاتلة. الطريقة الوحيدة لكشفها بسيطة جدا: تخطيط قلب، وعند تبيانها، تصبح معالجتها سهلة جدا. عائلتنا هي الشاهد.

The story of our family illustrates the importance of ALL family members when someone dies young from

Remy was 20 years old when he collapsed. His heart suddenly stopped. It turned out that he had a heart condition called “Long QT Syndrome” (LQTS), fatal to the young particularly between age 12 and 35.

Remy never showed any symptoms before, so his heart was never checked. A simple EKG would have revealed his heart condition and he would have been treated and saved.

Immediately after Remy’s sudden death, the whole family was screened. It turned out that Remy’s Dad and one of his two sisters had the same condition.

Thanks to Remy, we were able to protect many members in our family. Later on, many relatives of Remy’s Dad –on his mother’s side- were diagnosed with LQTS and have been treated. So Remy’s grandma must have passed the LQTS to Remy’s Dad who passed it to Remy and his sister who also passed it to her son.

That shows how this condition moved from one generation to another. It is and the earlier you detect it the better it is, as medication can treat this specific condition. Thus the importance of testing. Our family is the example.
