UNESCO Office in Beirut UNESCO Regional Office in Beirut The UNESCO Regional Office for Education in the Arab States was established in 1961 in Beirut.

The Office has been serving the Arab region and the member states of UNESCO. Since the beginning of 2002, the UNESCO Office in Beirut has assumed two new roles within a global network of offices and bureaus:

- Regional Bureau for Education in the Arab States;

- Cluster Office for Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Iraq and the Palestinian Territories in the Middle East Cluster. As a Regional Bureau, the Beirut Office is a center of expertise in the field of Education for the Arab world. In carrying out this mission, the UNESCO Beirut Cluster Office , serves twenty-two Arab countries in the region in the field of Education. Despite their common language and culture, Arab countries enjoy cultural variations and different national and sub-regional priorities and concerns which UNESCO takes into account when fulfilling its mandate. As a Cluster Office, its role is to implement UNESCO’s Biennial Program by adapting the implementation of programs in its fields of competence to the specific characteristics of the region and working to ensure an active presence in each Member State. The office is responsible for providing assistance both upstream and downstream through planning, programming, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of activities.

في المجمع الثقافي لمؤسسات الإمام الصدر في صور، نظّم مشغل الورق Papyrus تدريبًا عمليًا لمجموعة من السيدات، من أمهات فتيات مبرّة رحاب الزهراء (ع)، تعلّمن خلاله فنون إعادة تدوير الورق وتحويله إلى منتجات يدوية مبتكرة، من دفاتر وبطاقات وتذكارات.

وجاء هذا التدريب بدعم من مكتب اليونسكو – بيروت، ضمن مشروع «تمكين المجتمع عبر فنون الورق المعاد تدويره»، في إطار برنامج دعم الصناعات الثقافية والإبداعية.

تجربة تجمع بين التعلّم والإبداع والتمكين والاستدامة، وتمنح المشاركات مهارات عملية يمكن أن تتحول إلى فرص للإنتاج والمشاركة الاقتصادية والاجتماعية، وتسهم في دعم الاستدامة البيئية عبر إعادة توظيف المواد القابلة للتدوير بأساليب إبداعية ومنتجة.

This activity is supported by the UNESCO Heritage Emergency Fund and the UNESCO-Aschberg Programme for Artists and Cultural Professionals, with the participation of France through a voluntary contribution to the Lebanon Post-Conflict and Disaster special account.

What happens when culture creates opportunities, strengthens livelihoods and keeps heritage alive? 🇱🇧

Through the Support to Cultural and Creative Industries in Tyre and Baalbeck project, is working with local partners to strengthen cultural and creative initiatives, support livelihoods and create new opportunities for artists, cultural professionals and local communities.

From traditional crafts and creative expression to storytelling and cultural spaces, the project helps keep Lebanon’s heritage alive while enabling the people who carry it forward to build sustainable futures.
Because preserving heritage is also about investing in the people, skills and creativity that keep culture alive.💙

Supported by the UNESCO Heritage Emergency Fund, the UNESCO–Aschberg Programme for Artists and Cultural Professionals, and France through a voluntary contribution to the Lebanon PCPD special account.

ماذا يحدث عندما تخلق الثقافة فرصًا، وتعزّز سبل العيش، وتحافظ على التراث حيًّا؟ 🇱🇧

📍 - Alla stazione ferroviaria di Mar Mikhael, i binari riemergono come tracce di memoria.

Dopo oltre cinquant’anni di silenzio, la loro linea di ferro torna alla luce. L’intervento, finanziato dalla attraverso Beirut e implementato da UNESCO e UN-Habitat in collaborazione con la Direzione Generale delle Antichità libanese, porta avanti il restauro conservativo di oltre 10.000 m² di patrimonio storico industriale.

Un progetto di archeologia urbana e rigenerazione che prevede il consolidamento degli edifici storici, la salvaguardia delle vestigia ferroviarie e la creazione di un parco pubblico restituito alla cittadinanza.

La città ritrova così il ritmo perduto del suo tempo e uno spazio condiviso per il proprio futuro.

📍Beirut - At the Mar Mikhael railway station, the tracks re-emerge like traces of memory.

After over fifty years of silence, their iron line returns to light. The intervention, funded by through Beirut and implemented by UNESCO Office in Beirut and UN-Habitat Lebanon in collaboration with the Lebanese General Directorate of Antiquities, carries forward the conservative restoration of over 10,000 m² of industrial historical heritage.

A project of urban archaeology and regeneration that provides for the consolidation of historic buildings, the safeguarding of railway vestiges, and the creation of a public park returned to the citizens.

Thus, the city wins back the lost rhythm of its time and a shared space for its future.

Meet Farah, a participant in UNESCO’s Media and Information Literacy programme, who has spent the past year training on fact-checking, misinformation and combating hate speech.

Why hate speech today?
Because what we say, share and amplify online can shape how we see one another offline.

Now, she’s turning knowledge into action.

This is part of the Youth Empowerment Project in South Lebanon, funded by UNIFIL and implemented by UNESCO.

لماذا خطاب الكراهية؟
ولماذا يهمّنا اليوم؟
وماذا يمكن للشباب أن يفعلوا حياله؟

تعرّفوا على فرح، إحدى المشاركات في برنامج اليونسكو للتربية الإعلامية والمعلوماتية، والتي أمضت العام الماضي في تدريبات حول التحقق من المعلومات، والمعلومات المضللة، ومكافحة خطاب الكراهية.

لماذا خطاب الكراهية اليوم؟
لأن ما نقوله ونشاركه وننشره على الإنترنت يمكن أن يؤثر في الطريقة التي ننظر بها إلى بعضنا البعض في حياتنا اليومية.

واليوم، تحوّل فرح ما تعلّمته إلى فعل.

يأتي هذا العمل ضمن مشروع تمكين الشباب في جنوب لبنان، بتمويل من اليونيفيل وتنفيذ اليونسكو.

What happens when librarians from across Lebanon come together to learn, exchange and innovate? 📚

From North to South Lebanon, 52 library professionals from 34 public libraries came together to advance their expertise, share experiences and foster collective learning.

From training to practice, the workshop focused on strengthening expertise in library management and services, sharing best practices in community engagement and social media visibility, and exploring practical digitization tools to modernize library services.

Together with the Lebanese Ministry Of Culture, we’re working to rehabilitate Lebanon’s public library network, including strengthening the capacities of librarians across the country, with the support of Royal Norwegian Embassy in Beirut, , and .

From North to South, librarians are connecting, advancing their capacities and innovating to better serve their local communities.

اذا يحدث عندما يجتمع أمناء المكتبات من مختلف أنحاء لبنان للتعلّم وتبادل الخبرات والابتكار؟ 📚

من الشمال إلى الجنوب، اجتمع 52 من العاملين في المكتبات من 34 مكتبة عامة بهدف تطوير خبراتهم، وتبادل التجارب، وتعزيز التعلّم الجماعي.

من التدريب إلى التطبيق، ركّزت الورشة على تطوير الخبرات في إدارة المكتبات وخدماتها، وتبادل أفضل الممارسات في إشراك المجتمع وتعزيز الحضور على وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي، واستكشاف أدوات عملية للرقمنة وتحديث خدمات المكتبات.

وبالتعاون مع وزارة الثقافة، نعمل على إعادة تأهيل شبكة المكتبات العامة في لبنان، بما يشمل تعزيز قدرات أمناء المكتبات في مختلف أنحاء البلاد، بدعم من النرويج، وMCN Build، وLoops Foundation.

من الشمال إلى الجنوب، يتواصل أمناء المكتبات، ويطوّرون قدراتهم ويبتكرون لتقديم خدمات أفضل لمجتمعاتهم المحلية.

تواصل الهجمات على المدارس ارتفاعها في مختلف أنحاء العالم.

في عام 2025، تم تسجيل 1,680 هجوماً على المدارس، بزيادة قدرها 33% مقارنة بالعام السابق.

في ، تدعو اليونسكو إلى تعزيز حماية التعليم، واحترام القانون الدولي، وضمان وصول آمن ومستمر إلى التعلّم، حتى في أوقات الأزمات.

وفي المنطقة العربية، تواصل #اليونسكو الوقوف إلى جانب وزارات التربية والتعليم والمجتمعات المحلية، لدعم استمرارية التعليم وتوفير الدعم للطلاب والمعلمين والنظم التعليمية، وضمان حق الجميع في التعلّم.📚💙

📚 Literacy opens pathways to learning, opportunity and greater participation in society.

This year, we are proud to celebrate Alsama from Lebanon, one of the three laureates of the 2026 UNESCO Confucius Prize for Literacy. 🇱🇧🏆

Through its Accelerated Education for Out-of-school Displaced Youth programme, Alsama Project provides displaced youth with limited or no literacy skills with pathways to continue their education, access employment opportunities and actively participate in their communities.

The 2026 laureates also include:
🇲🇽 Government of the State of Chiapas, Mexico, for Chiapas Puede, providing bilingual and culturally grounded literacy opportunities across all 121 municipalities of Chiapas.

🇹🇭 Hat Yai City Municipality, Thailand, for Language for Life, connecting multilingual learning with everyday needs, community resilience and economic opportunities.

🚂 يروي كل أثر وكل شقّ وكل طبقة من الطلاء في أروقة محطة قطار مار مخايل التاريخية، فصلاً من حكاية السكك الحديدية في لبنان.

وبدلاً من محو هذه الشواهد التي خلفها الزمن، يعمل فريق متخصص في الحفاظ على التراث، يضمّ العديد من المرمِّمات الماهرات بعناية على صونها.

تتمثل الغاية المرجوة من مشروع إعادة تأهيل محطة قطار مار مخايل، الذي تموّله الحكومة الإيطالية، من خلال الوكالة الإيطالية للتعاون الإنمائي، وتنفذه اليونسكو وبرنامج الأمم المتحدة للمستوطنات البشرية، في تحويل الموقع إلى ”منتزه للتراث الصناعي“، وإعادة الحياة إلى فضاء كان يوماً القلب النابض لشبكة السكك الحديدية في لبنان، ويصل الناس من جديد بفصل مهم من تاريخ البلد الصناعي.

لا تقتصر أهمية المشروع على الترميم، بل تمتد لتشمل إعادة تأهيل معلم ثقافي مشترك، وإحياء الذاكرة الجماعية، .
