UNESCO Welcomes the Adoption of Lebanon’s New Media Law

UNESCO welcomes the adoption by the Lebanese Parliament of the new Media Law, marking an important milestone in Lebanon’s efforts to modernize its media legislation and strengthen freedom of expression, press freedom and the safety of journalists.

Over the past years, UNESCO has supported the Ministry of Information in relaunching national consultations on media law reform, providing technical and legal expertise and facilitating dialogue with national stakeholders. This support helped advance the reform process and align the proposed framework with international norms and standards, contributing to the submission of the draft law to Parliament.

UNESCO welcomes provisions aimed at promoting a safe and professional media environment and addressing incitement to hatred and violence. Their implementation should remain grounded in respect of freedom of expression, access to information and the safety of journalists, in line with international human rights standards.

UNESCO congratulates all those who contributed to this landmark reform and will continue to support the Government of Lebanon and all stakeholders in their continued efforts to implement the new law and foster a diverse, independent, pluralistic and safe media environment.

من مواصلة تعليمهم في ظل الظروف الصعبة، إلى حماية التراث الثقافي، ودفع عجلة المعرفة والعلوم، والتفكير النقدي، والتصدي للمعلومات المضللة وخطاب الكراهية، لا يساهم الشباب في رسم مستقبلهم فحسب، بل يساهمون أيضاً في رسم مستقبل مجتمعاتهم.

في مختلف برامجنا، نرى الشباب شركاء وقادة، يحملون الأفكار والإبداع والصمود والأمل في مواجهة تحديات اليوم.

A milestone in safeguarding Lebanon’s railway heritage. 🚉🇱🇧

UNESCO has officially handed over the restored exterior of the historic Passengers Building at Mar Mikhael Railway Station to the Railway and Public Transportation Authority, marking the completion of the first phase of its conservation.

Once the gateway to rail travel in Lebanon, the building witnessed the departure of the first Beirut–Damascus train in 1895 and remains a landmark of the country’s industrial heritage.

Funded by the Government of Italy through AICS and implemented by UNESCO with national partners, the restoration brought back key architectural features while preserving the building’s authenticity and historic character.

محطّة جديدة في مسار حماية التراث السككي في لبنان. 🚉🇱🇧

سلّمت اليونسكو رسميًا الواجهة الخارجية المُرمّمة للمبنى التاريخي للمسافرين في محطة قطار مار مخايل إلى هيئة إدارة السكك الحديد والنقل المشترك، معلنةً استكمال المرحلة الأولى من أعمال الترميم والحفاظ على هذا المعلم التراثي.

لطالما شكّل هذا المبنى بوابةً رئيسية للسفر بالقطار في لبنان، وكان شاهدًا على انطلاق أول رحلة قطار بين بيروت ودمشق عام 1895. واليوم، يواصل دوره كرمز بارز للتراث الصناعي اللبناني وذاكرةٍ حيّة لتاريخ النقل في البلاد.

بدعم من حكومة إيطاليا عبر الوكالة الإيطالية للتعاون الإنمائي (AICS)، وتنفيذ اليونسكو بالشراكة مع وزارة الثقافة والمؤسسة العامة لسكك الحديد والنقل المشترك، أعادت أعمال الترميم إحياء السمات المعمارية الأساسية للمبنى، مع الحفاظ على أصالته وهويته التاريخية.

How do we stop misinformation before it spreads? 🤔
What role can young people play in building a more informed society? 💙🇱🇧

Listen to the voices of young participants from South Lebanon as they share why Media and Information Literacy (MIL) matters and how learning to question, verify, and think critically is empowering them to make a positive difference in their communities.

Over three days, more than 50 young people strengthened their leadership, critical thinking, and fact-checking skills through interactive workshops, teamwork, and youth-led campaign design.

Because every informed decision starts with asking the right questions. ✅

This activity is part of the Youth Empowerment Project in South Lebanon, funded by and implemented by UNESCO.

كيف نوقف المعلومات المضللة قبل أن تنتشر؟ 🤔
وما الدور الذي يمكن أن يلعبه الشباب في بناء مجتمع أكثر وعيًا؟ 💙🇱🇧

استمعوا إلى أصوات شباب من جنوب لبنان وهم يشاركون لماذا تُعدّ التربية الإعلامية والمعلوماتية (MIL) مهمة، وكيف ساعدهم تعلّم مهارات التساؤل، والتحقق من المعلومات، والتفكير النقدي على إحداث أثر إيجابي في مجتمعاتهم.

على مدى ثلاثة أيام، عزّز أكثر من 50 شابًا وشابة مهاراتهم في القيادة، والتفكير النقدي، والتحقق من المعلومات من خلال ورش عمل تفاعلية، والعمل الجماعي، وتصميم حملات يقودها الشباب.

لأن كل قرارٍ واعٍ يبدأ بطرح الأسئلة الصحيحة. ✅

يأتي هذا النشاط في إطار مشروع تمكين الشباب والشابات في جنوب لبنان، الممول من اليونيفيل والمنفذ من قبل اليونسكو.

“I built my own toy and called it ‘Zooza’. It will stay with me after we leave the shelter.” — Zahraa, 7 years old.🧸💙

For children affected by displacement, healing goes beyond having a safe place to stay. It means having spaces to express emotions, reconnect with others, and regain a sense of normalcy and hope.

Through this intervention, UNESCO reached more than 1,500 children and youth across 25 collective shelters in Lebanon, providing art-based mental health and psychosocial support through drawing, storytelling, music, and play, in collaboration with its implementing partner, .fdn🎨🖌️

Implemented through the Multi-Year Resilience Programme (MYRP), funded by , this initiative helped children build confidence and strengthen resilience during crisis.🇱🇧💙

🎨 Because every child deserves the right to create, express, and recover.

“صنعت لعبتي الخاصة وأطلقت عليها اسم «زوزة». ستبقى معي بعد أن نغادر مركز الإيواء.” — زهراء، 7 سنوات، تقيم في أحد مراكز الإيواء الجماعية. 🧸💙

بالنسبة للأطفال المتأثرين بالأزمة، لا يقتصر التعافي على وجود مكان آمن للإقامة، بل يشمل أيضاً توفير مساحات تُمكّنهم من التعبير عن مشاعرهم، وإعادة التواصل مع الآخرين، واستعادة شعورهم بالحياة الطبيعية والأمل.

من خلال هذه المبادرة، وصلت اليونسكو، بالتعاون مع شريكها المنفذ “تري هاوس”، إلى أكثر من 1,500 طفل وشاب في 25 مركز إيواء جماعياً في لبنان، حيث وفّرت لهم دعماً نفسياً واجتماعياً قائماً على الفنون من خلال الرسم، وسرد القصص، والموسيقى، واللعب. 🎨🖌️

نُفّذت هذه المبادرة في إطار برنامج الصمود متعدد السنوات (MYRP)، بتمويل من صندوق “التعليم لا يمكن أن ينتظر” (ECW)، وساهمت في تعزيز ثقة الأطفال بأنفسهم وتقوية قدرتهم على الصمود في مواجهة الأزمات. 🇱🇧💙

🎨 لأن لكل طفل الحق في مساحة يبدع فيها، ويعبّر عن نفسه، ويتعافى.
