To everyone asking about our plans: we will not be holding the Beirut International Jazz Week this year, and celebrate the .

Jazz was born from struggle. It is more than entertainment; it is a language of resistance and a call for human solidarity. Today, the music must serve that original purpose. We cannot celebrate while our country bleeds—with thousands killed and over a million displaced.

We are calling on our global jazz community to honor the true spirit of this music. Raise your voices. Use your art. Demand an end to this death machine.

As part of EL DHAT Series 2026, a workshop dedicated to improvisation with Donna Khalife and Diego Rodríguez will take place on March 3.

Rooted in practice, listening, and interaction, this workshop approaches improvisation as a living process — unfolding in real time between sound, presence, and collective awareness.

Rather than focusing on a fixed style or theory-based instruction, the session explores real-time musical decision-making, deep listening, and the development of each participant’s personal artistic voice within jazz and contemporary music contexts.

The workshop is open to musicians and music students with prior musical knowledge and experience (not necessarily in improvisation.)

An invitation to expand how we think, hear, and respond — with openness, flexibility, and deeper musical connection.

في المشهد الموسيقي المعاصر، غالباً ما نضع حدوداً فاصلة بين الأنماط؛ فنصنفها كشرقي، جاز، إلكتروني، فلكلور، أو تجريبي.. حدودٌ توحي باختلافات تبدو في الواقع أعمق مما هي عليه.
تاريخياً، تلتقي هذه الأنماط جميعاً في جوهر واحد: "النداء والاستجابة" والعفوية المطلقة في اتخاذ القرار اللحظي. إنها موسيقى تولد من رحم اللحظة، تستجيب لـ "الآن"، ولا يمكن أن تُعزف مرتين بالأسلوب ذاته.

تأتي سلسلة حفلات "الذات" (EL DHAT) الموسيقية لتسليط الضوء على هذه المساحة المشتركة. ومن خلال جمع تجارب الارتجال جنباً إلى جنب، تعيد السلسلة صياغة هذه الأنماط، لا كجزر منعزلة، بل كتعبيرات متوازية عن دافع إنساني واحد: خلقُ أثرٍ صادق وعصيٍّ على التكرار.

In today’s music landscape, music is often categorized and separated into Oriental, jazz, electronic, folk, and experimental... These boundaries suggest differences that run deeper than they truly do.
But historically, they all share a spontaneous call-and-response and a reliance on live decision-making. They are a type of music born in the moment—responsive to the "now" and impossible to play the same way twice.

EL DHAT concert series aims to highlight this underexplored common ground. By placing improvisational practices side by side, the series reframes different genres not as separate worlds, but as parallel expressions of a shared human impulse: to create something truthful and unrepeatable.

The Beirut Jazz Society is excited to offer something special this August: one-on-one jazz improvisation classes with Arthur Satyan.

This is a chance for any instrumentalist to really dig into jazz improvisation, learning the tunes and understanding the scale/chord relationships. We just ask that you're very comfortable with your instrument, can read music, and know some basic music theory. That way, we can jump right into the good stuff!
Why Learn One-on-One with Arthur?

Learning individually with Arthur means you get a super personalized experience. He'll focus on exactly what you need to work on, whether it's understanding tricky chords or finding your own musical voice. You'll get direct feedback, answers to all your questions, and a chance to really grow your skills in a way that just isn't possible in a group setting. It's about building confidence and truly expressing yourself through your music.

About Your Tutor: Arthur Satyan
Arthur Satyan is a big name in jazz, especially around here. He grew up in a family of composers and spent over 20 years studying at top conservatories. Since coming to Lebanon in '96, he's been a key part of our jazz scene as a pianist, composer, and teacher. He even established the Jazz Department at the Lebanese National Conservatory. Arthur has played with some serious jazz legends, and his understanding of jazz is truly something else. Learning from him is a unique opportunity.

- What: 8 private jazz improvisation sessions
- When: Throughout August 2025 (we'll figure out a schedule that works for you and Arthur)
- Where: Multaqa, Beirut (it's a great spot for learning!)

Duane Eubanks is a highly regarded jazz trumpeter and composer celebrated for his soulful sound, which is deeply influenced by his Philadelphia roots. Praised by contemporaries such as Roy Hargrove, he honed his craft under jazz luminaries and rapidly ascended in the New York scene, becoming a member of Mulgrew Miller's Wingspan and Dave Holland's GRAMMY-winning big band. Consequently, he became a sought-after collaborator for numerous jazz legends, firmly establishing himself as a significant voice within the genre.

Hailing from a renowned musical family that includes his brothers Robin and Kevin Eubanks, Duane's artistic versatility extends beyond jazz; he has collaborated with artists spanning genres, including Alicia Keys and Wu-Tang Clan. He has graced the stages of major venues worldwide, such as Carnegie Hall. Committed to fostering the next generation of musicians, he is also actively involved in jazz education. Eubanks continues to perform with ensembles like the Mingus Big Band and recently completed a tour with his brothers.
