تأسست الجمعية الكويتية لحقوق الإنسان عام 1988م كفرع من المنظمة العربية لحقوق الإنسان وهي هيئة غير حكومية تهدف إلى حماية حقوق الإنسان وتعزيزها في الكويت والوطن العربي طبقاً للمعايير الدولية التي استقر عليها إجماع الأمم المتحدة والمواثيق والعهود الدولية التي صادقت عليها البلدان العربية ،و تم إشهار الجمعية رسمياً 6/11/2004م ، باسم " الجمعية الكويتية لحقوق الإنسان"
و تستخدم الجمعية في سبيل تحقيق أهداف
ها الوسائل القانونية ولا تباشر أية نشاطات سياسية وتركز جهودها على الانتهاكات التي تتعرض لها حقوق الإنسان بالمخالفة للقوانين الدولية والوطنية ، كما تناهض إعمال العنف سواء من جانب الجماعات الأهلية او الحكوميـة .
وتهدف الجمعية إلي تحقيق الأهداف التالية:
1- نشر الوعي بين الناس بالمواثيق الدولية لحقوق الإنسان وخاصة الإعلان العالمي لحقوق الإنسان والمواثيق الدولية المعنية وبالذات العهدين الدوليين الخاصين بحقوق الإنسان السياسية والمدنية وحقوقه الاقتصادية والاجتماعية والثقافية ، بالإضافة للمواثيـق الأخـري وطبقا لحقوق الإنسان المقررة في الدستور الكويتي ، والدفاع عن كافة الأفراد والجماعات الذين تتعرض حقوقهم الإنسانية للانتهاك خلافاً لما هو منصوص عليه في تلك المواثيق وفي الدستور والقوانين وتتخذ الجمعية لتحقيق أهدافها جميع الوسائل والأساليب المنسجمة مع تلك الأهداف .
2-العمل بالوسائل المشروعة من خلال القنوات القانونية على احترام وتعزيز حقوق الإنسان والحريات الأساسية لجميع الكويتيين ولغيرهم من الأشخاص الموجودين على أرض الكويت ، ووقف ما قد يحدث من انتهاكات لحقوق الإنسان في الكويت أيا كان مصدرها ، والتعاون مع السلطات الحكومية المسئولة في سبيل عدم حدوث هذه الانتهاكات . The Kuwaiti Association for Human Rights was founded in 1988 as a branch of the Arabian Organization for Human Rights which is Non-Governmental designed to protect the human rights and promoting them in Kuwait and the Arab Counties, based on the international standards assessed by the United Nations and the International Conventions and Charters. The association has been declared on 6/11/2004 under the name of: "The Kuwaiti Association for Human Rights". The association uses the legal means in order to achieve its goals; it does not proceed with any political activities however concentrate its efforts on human rights violations of the international and national laws, also it struggles against violence either by the government or community groups. The association aims to achieve the following objectives:
1- Raise awareness among people using the international conventions of human rights especially the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the related international covenants, especially the Two International Covenants of the political, civil, economic, social and cultural rights for the human, in addition to the other conventions of human rights which were stated in the Constitution of Kuwait, and defending of individuals and groups who suffers from violations. The assembly adopts all means and methods that consistent with its goals.
2- Using the legal methods through the lawful channels to enhance the human rights and basic liberties for Kuwaiti people and others, stopping the current violations against human rights whatever its causes, and cooperate with the governmental authorities to prevent such violations.
