[News] Talking with Saab about Australia–Korea Defence Industry Connections.

AustCham Korea recently met with Danny Hyun, a System Safety Specialist at Saab Australia for a discussion on the evolving Australia–Korea defence industry ecosystem and opportunities for deeper engagement between the two markets.

Although Saab is a Swedish-headquartered company, it has built a strong and long-standing presence in both Australia and Korea. Saab Australia has been supporting Australia’s defence capability for decades, including through complex command, control and combat management systems, while Saab’s Korea presence dates back to 2002 and includes cooperation across naval systems, radar technology, missiles and other advanced defence solutions.

The discussion highlighted how Australia and Korea are increasingly connected through defence, security, technology and industrial capability, not only through government-to-government ties, but also through companies that operate across both markets and help build practical bridges between the two ecosystems.

AustCham Korea looks forward to continuing the conversation with Saab and other defence industry stakeholders as Australia–Korea cooperation in this sector continues to grow.

[News] Australia–Korea Critical Minerals Cooperation Continues to Grow

Australian lithium miner Ioneer Ltd. (ASX: INR | NASDAQ: IONR) has announced plans to work with KIND(Korea Overseas Infrastructure & Urban Development Corporation) and Hyundai Engineering Co. Ltd. to support the development of its Rhyolite Ridge lithium-boron project in Nevada.

The partnership is expected to be formalised through memorandums of understanding in July 2026 and builds on Ioneer’s existing relationship with Korea, including its 2021 supply agreement with EcoPro Innovation.

Rhyolite Ridge is one of the world’s most significant lithium-boron projects and is expected to play an important role in supporting battery supply chains, clean technology and the global energy transition.

Once operational, the project is expected to produce 27,800 tonnes of lithium hydroxide and 135,500 tonnes of boric acid per year, with first commercial production targeted for 2029.

For AustCham Korea, this is another strong example of the growing depth of Australia–Korea cooperation in critical minerals, clean energy supply chains and advanced industrial partnerships.

As both countries look to strengthen energy security, supply chain resilience and investment in future-facing industries, partnerships such as this highlight the increasingly practical and strategic nature of the Australia–Korea business relationship.

[News] Australia–Korea Trade Matters More Than Ever.

Following her 30 April interview with AustCham Korea Chair Ross Gregory on Australia–Korea bilateral trade and investment, The Korea Economic Daily journalist RIAHN KIM has written an op-ed highlighting Australia’s growing importance to Korea’s supply chain security.

The article notes that Australia has become an increasingly important supplier of LNG and crude oil to Korea. Australia’s share of Korea’s LNG imports rose from 23% in 2023 to 31.4% in 2024, while Australia’s share of Korea’s crude oil imports increased from 2.1% last year to 5.2% in April this year, following the outbreak of conflict in the Middle East.

The central message is clear: in an era of supply chain insecurity, trusted resource partners such as Australia cannot be viewed only through the lens of market size or the number of companies represented in a chamber network. Strategic importance is also measured by reliability, long-term engagement and the ability to support Korea in moments of global uncertainty.

For AustCham Korea, this is a timely reminder of why the Australia–Korea trade and investment relationship matters. Australia is not only a major supplier of energy and resources, but also a trusted partner in building more resilient supply chains across LNG, critical minerals, food, infrastructure, defence, education and advanced industries.

Strong bilateral trade is not built only in moments of crisis. It is built through consistent engagement, regular dialogue and trusted relationships between government, business and industry. AustCham Korea remains committed to supporting that work and strengthening the commercial links that underpin one of Korea’s most important strategic economic partnerships.

[News] AustCham Korea Attends Luncheon with Foreign Investment Ombudsman Doo-Sik Kim.

AustCham Korea was pleased to attend a luncheon marking the first anniversary of Mr Kim Doo Sik’s appointment as Foreign Investment Ombudsman.

The Foreign Investment Ombudsman plays an important role in supporting foreign-invested companies in Korea by listening to business grievances, facilitating dialogue with relevant government agencies, and helping identify practical solutions and areas for policy improvement.

The luncheon brought together representatives from AustCham Korea, other foreign chambers of commerce and foreign business-related organisations to discuss key issues and concerns faced by foreign-invested companies operating in Korea.

During the discussion, Mr Kim listened closely to the views raised by participants and provided guidance on possible follow-up measures, areas for further consultation, and opportunities to better support the foreign business community.

In the open discussion session, AustCham Korea Acting Executive Director Jacco Zwetsloot highlighted the importance of ensuring that smaller foreign chambers are also included in government-led consultations and business roundtables, including those hosted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources. He noted that smaller chambers also represent important investor communities and can provide practical, on-the-ground perspectives from companies active in Korea.

AustCham Korea is grateful for its engagement with the Foreign Investment Ombudsman and and looks forward to continuing such dialog to better understand the challenges faced by Australian and Australia–Korea businesses in Korea, and to support their continued growth and engagement in the Korean market.
