[ADRN Working Paper] Democratic Backsliding in South Korea

The Asia Democracy Research Network (ADRN) conducted research on recent democratic backsliding in South Korea, recognizing the importance of investigating implications of this political turmoil and providing suggestions to prevent further deterioration. The researchers point out that the underlying causes of the backsliding lie in the presidential system, which gives the president an unofficial degree of authority, and in the political parties’ violation of the norm of mutual forbearance. They suggest that current crisis is closer to a “top-down erosion,” which resulted from political elites disregarding democratic principles, despite stable public support for democracy.

[EAI Issue Briefing] Expectations and Challenges for Improved Relations with “Unfavorable” China under the Lee Administration: 2025 EAI Public Opinion Poll on East Asia

D**g Ryul Lee, Chair of China Research Center at the East Asia Institute (EAI) and Professor at D**gduk Women’s University, analyzes the challenges of the new government`s public diplomacy with China, based on South Koreans` perceptions of China in the 2025 EAI Public Opinion Poll on East Asia. Lee points out that the persistent unfavorable sentiment toward China is likely to persist due to underlying structural factors. Conversely, the public recognizes the importance of ROK-China relations from an economic perspective and anticipates China’s involvement in addressing North Korea-related issues. Lee suggests that the new government adopt a gradual approach to improve bilateral relations by carefully considering public opinion and relations with major countries, and create conditions for strategic communication to resolve the North Korean issues.

[EAI Public Opinion Briefing] 2025 EAI Public Opinion Poll on East Asia: Overall Perception, United States, China, Japan, and North Korea

The East Asia Institute (EAI) has published the results of the 2025 EAI Public Opinion Poll on East Asia, conducted on June 4-5, 2025. The survey indicated an escalation in public perception of threats associated with the U.S.-China competition and the rise of protectionism. Additionally, a noticeable public demand emerged for the new government to prioritize diplomatic initiatives such as economic diplomacy, strengthening the ROK-U.S. alliance, and future-oriented cooperation with Japan and China. By country, while the majority of respondents had a favorable impression of the United States and an unfavorable impression of China, the number of respondents with a favorable impression of Japan increased sharply, surpassing those with an unfavorable impression for the first time. With respect to inter-Korean relations, respondents anticipate an improvement in relations and have called for China to assume an active role in addressing North Korean provocations and achieving denuclearization.

동아시아연구원(EAI)은 한국리서치와 함께 2025년 6월 4-5일 양일간 실시한 동아시아 인식조사 결과를 그래프로 시각화하여 공개합니다. 이번 조사에서는 미중 경쟁 및 갈등, 보호무역 및 첨단기술 경쟁에 대한 국민의 위협 인식이 증가한 것으로 나타났습니다. 나아가 신정부가 경제 외교 및 한미동맹 강화, 미래지향적 한일·한중 협력 등의 외교 과제를 우선 추진해야 한다는 국민적 요구도 감지되었습니다. 국가별로는 응답자 다수가 미국에 좋은 인상을 갖고 중국에 좋지 않은 인상을 드러낸 가운데, 일본에 좋은 인상을 갖은 응답자가 급증하며 처음으로 좋지 않은 인상을 추월하였습니다. 남북관계에 대해서는 신정부에서 개선될 것이라는 기대와 함께 북한 도발 대응 및 비핵화를 위한 중국의 역할을 중시하는 여론이 포착되었습니다.
