IVI developed the world’s first low-cost oral cholera vaccine and a new-generation typhoid conjugate vaccine, both pre-qualified by the World Health Organization (WHO). IVI is headquartered in Seoul, Republic of Korea with a Europe Regional Office in Sweden, an Africa Regional Office in Rwanda, a Country Office in Austria, and a Country and Project Office in Kenya. Colombia and IVI share a commitment to advancing health sovereignty by strengthening vaccine research, development, and manufacturing capacity, and we were delighted to welcome H.E. Yobani Velásquez Quintero, Ambassador of the Republic of Colombia to the Republic of Korea, and a delegation from VECOL S.A. to IVI headquarters in Seoul.

Ambassador Velásquez and the VECOL delegation met with IVI Deputy Director General In-Kyu Yoon and colleagues to discuss opportunities for collaboration in vaccine development. Building on IVI’s experience and expertise conducting clinical trials in Colombia and across the region, IVI and VECOL will explore possibilities for collaborative clinical development to help advance vaccines through the development pipeline.

We were also delighted to welcome back VECOL colleagues who are alumni of IVI’s GTH-B training program and to hear how their learnings from the program have been directly applicable to their work. Zulma Rocio Suárez Moreno, Head Scientist of the COLOMBIAVAC project, led the delegation’s presentation on Colombia’s efforts to strengthen domestic vaccine research and manufacturing, opening further discussion on areas where IVI’s clinical development expertise could support these efforts.

Strengthening regional partnerships is essential to building sustainable vaccine ecosystems and advancing health security across the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). In this spirit, IVI was pleased to welcome Director-General Jae-hwan Kwon from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea for a seminar on regional cooperation and vaccine ecosystem development.

The seminar at IVI’s headquarters in Seoul brought together IVI researchers and staff to discuss opportunities for sustainable capacity building, stronger partnerships, and vaccine ecosystem development across Southeast Asia.

As the first Team Lead of the ASEAN-Korea Programme Management Team, Director-General Kwon shared perspectives on cooperation between ASEAN and the Republic of Korea, as well as lessons learned from supporting regional development initiatives.

Drawing on his extensive diplomatic experience as Director-General for Protocol Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Director-General Kwon shared insights into the role of diplomatic protocol in fostering trust, strengthening international partnerships, and facilitating high-level cooperation.

Strong cooperation between IVI and Austria continues to grow, and we were delighted to welcome H.E. Eva Marie Russek, Ambassador of the Republic of Austria to the Republic of Korea, to IVI headquarters in Seoul. Ambassador Russek met with Director General Jerome Kim on our shared priorities in global health, further strengthening the growing partnership between IVI and Austria, including through IVI’s country office in Vienna.

Their invigorating discussions explored IVI’s innovative work to develop the next generation of life-saving vaccines and to make vaccines more affordable and accessible. This commitment is reflected in IVI’s research supporting a single-dose HPV vaccination schedule, for example, helping expand access to vaccination worldwide by reducing costs and increasing coverage.

We thank Ambassador Russek for her visit and tour of our laboratories and look forward to further strengthening our growing partnership.

Applications are now open for the 2026 Introductory Course for Standard Practice (GxP), designed to equip biomanufacturing professionals from low- and middle-income countries with the knowledge and practical skills needed to meet international quality standards.

Through a combination of online and in-person training, participants gain foundational knowledge of international GxP standards and their application in biomanufacturing settings, including Good Laboratory Practice, Good Clinical Practice, Good Manufacturing Practice, and biosafety.

The future of mRNA technologies is immense. The rapid progress achieved during the COVID-19 pandemic was only the beginning of what these platforms can deliver.

This was a key theme at the 20th Key Symposium on mRNA Vaccines in Stockholm, held at the The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, where the Nobel Prizes in Physics and Chemistry are decided.

Speaking at the event, IVI Director General Dr. Jerome Kim highlighted that COVID-19 showed what is possible when science, collaboration, and urgency align—but warned that some of that momentum is now being lost.

The achievements of the pandemic era were not the endpoint, but the beginning of a broader transformation in global health—one that must be sustained and expanded for equitable impact worldwide.

Following yesterday's ASEAN Vaccine Security and Self-Reliance (AVSSR) meeting, discussions continued under the theme, "ASEAN Vaccine Security: Pooled Power, Pooled Procurement," shifting from why regional collaboration matters to how it can be put into practice.

Today, IVI Director General Dr. Jerome Kim delivered a presentation on WHO prequalification and regulatory harmonization, highlighting how trusted regulatory pathways can help make pooled procurement more effective by reducing duplication, building confidence in quality-assured vaccines, and enabling faster, more equitable access to vaccines across countries.

The conversation then moved from context-setting to collaboration. IVI joined partners in co-facilitating an interactive workshop, where country representatives worked in small groups to strategize practical pathways toward pooled procurement in ASEAN. Together, they identified priority objectives, examined barriers and enablers, and proposed concrete next steps for the region.

Strengthening vaccine security requires more than technical expertise. It requires dialogue, trust, and collaboration across countries and institutions. Our sincere thanks to the National Vaccine Institute of Thailand for hosting this two-day AVSSR meeting. Workshops like today’s help transform shared ambition into practical action.

Pandemic preparedness depends on strong partnerships, scientific collaboration, and the ability to turn innovation into action. With this shared focus, we were pleased to welcome Dr. Oliver Morgan, Director of Pandemic and Epidemic Intelligence Innovation at the World Health Organization Pandemic Hub in Berlin, to IVI headquarters in Seoul for a valuable exchange on global health security.

Through discussions on current efforts, emerging technologies, data-driven approaches, and innovative solutions to strengthen pandemic and epidemic preparedness, we are deepening collaboration across IVI, WHO, The Hong Kong Jockey Club Global Health Institute, and the broader global health community.

For the third year, IVI had the pleasure to co-convene the ASEAN Meeting on the ASEAN Vaccine Security and Self-Reliance (AVSSR) in Bangkok, bringing together Member States and partners to advance a shared vision of sustainable, affordable, and timely access to vaccines across the region while strengthening resilience against future health emergencies.

IVI Director General Dr. Jerome Kim joined representatives from the World Bank Group and the Regionalized Vaccine Manufacturing Collaborative for a panel discussion moderated by Dr. Nakorn Premsri, Director of Thailand's National Vaccine Institute. Together, the speakers underscored that achieving vaccine security and self-reliance requires coordinated action across the entire vaccine ecosystem—from research and development and manufacturing to financing, regulatory harmonization, pooled procurement, and regional coordination.

The discussion highlighted how international and regional partners can help catalyze stronger vaccine ecosystems by bringing together stakeholders, aligning priorities, mobilizing resources, and supporting collaboration across borders.

As ASEAN transitions to the next phase of AVSSR through 2030, IVI is proud to continue supporting regional efforts to build resilient and self-reliant vaccine systems.
