On World Fair Play Day, World Taekwondo announced that the World Taekwondo Fair Play Award, first presented at the 2019 World Taekwondo Gala Awards, will return as a permanent annual honor at the Gala Awards, recognizing exemplary conduct across Taekwondo.

World Taekwondo mourns passing of Grand Master Dai Won Moon

SEOUL, Korea (May 18, 2026) - World Taekwondo pays its respects to Grand Master Dai Won Moon, who passed away on May 15, by setting up a memorial altar at the federation’s headquarters in Seoul from May 18 to 20.

Grand Master Moon was widely regarded as the “Father of Mexican Taekwondo” and played a pioneering role in introducing and developing Taekwondo in Mexico. He founded the Federacion Mexicana de Taekwondo and served as its president, helping lay the foundation for Mexico’s emergence as one of the world’s leading Taekwondo nations.

Among his many contributions to World Taekwondo, Grand Master Moon served as a World Taekwondo Council Member and Chair of the Technical Committee.

World Taekwondo remains deeply indebted to Grand Master Moon for his invaluable dedication and contribution to the global development of Taekwondo. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, students, and the entire Taekwondo community at this difficult time.

World Taekwondo Pays Its Deepest Respects to Grand Master Dai Won Moon

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Grandmaster Dai Won Moon at the age of 83.

Grandmaster Moon was lovingly regarded as the “Father of Mexican Taekwondo” and was a true pioneer at a time when Taekwondo was virtually unknown in the late 1960s. He founded the Federacion Mexicana de Taekwondo and served with distinction as its president. From winning its first medals at the 1975 World Taekwondo Championships, Mexico has since grown into one of the world’s leading Taekwondo nations.

Among his many roles within World Taekwondo, Grandmaster Moon served as a World Taekwondo Council Member and Chair of the Technical Committee.

Thanks to visionaries like Grandmaster Moon and their selfless dedication and sacrifices, Taekwondo has become one of the most popular martial arts and sports in the world today. World Taekwondo remains deeply indebted to Grandmaster Moon for his invaluable contributions.

To honor his remarkable legacy and memory, World Taekwondo will set up a memorial altar at the WT Headquarters in Seoul from May 18 to 20.

World Taekwondo extends its heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, students, and the entire Taekwondo community in Mexico and around the world.

May Grand Master Dai Won Moon rest in peace.
