[BCM Event]

On 31 March 2026, the Business Council of Mongolia (BCM) co-organized the Stakeholder Validation Workshop on Green Investment Plans for Mongolia's Billion Trees National Movement, together with the Asian Forest Cooperation Organization (AFoCO) and the National Forest Agency of Mongolia (Ойн газар), with support from The World Bank Group, and in collaboration with Seoul National University and URECA LLC.
The workshop was held under the Mongolia Green Resilient Landscapes Technical Assistance Program, bringing together government agencies, financial institutions, development partners, and private sector actors to validate three Green Investment Plans (GIPs) designed to translate priority forest landscape restoration interventions into bankable opportunities integrating carbon finance, blended finance, and private sector engagement.

The workshop featured presentations on:
🌲 Carbon sequestration potential of Mongolia's BTNM — with findings showing up to 1.48 million tCO₂ sequestered annually if key interventions are implemented at scale

🌱 Carbon markets and global forestry case studies presented by Juan Chang of Permian Global

🏔️ GIP 1 — Restoring 10,000 ha of degraded forests in Arkhangai Province through 22 million Siberian larch trees, underpinned by carbon finance under the Verra VCS VM0047 methodology

🌾 GIP 2 — Developing diversified sea buckthorn agroforestry across 1,950 ha in Bulgan Province, integrating 150 community farms and a blended finance model

💧 GIP 3 — Riparian zone restoration in Tuv Province, combining ecosystem co-benefits with investment-grade carbon finance structures

The BCM extends its sincere appreciation to AFoCO, the National Forest Agency of Mongolia, The World Bank, Seoul National University, URECA LLC, and all participants for their valuable contributions to this important initiative in support of Mongolia's green transition and NDC ambitions.

Transitions to Full Implementation at 3rd PSC Meeting

The 3rd Project Steering Committee (PSC) Meeting for AFoCO/032/2022, held on 18 December 2025 in Seoul, marked a pivotal shift from administrative planning to full-scale physical implementation across the Mekong region. Representatives from CLMV countries (Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Viet Nam) and the ASEAN Secretariat reviewed tangible progress, including the completion of water infrastructure, operational nurseries, and the installation of forest fire lookout towers.

Looking ahead, the Committee endorsed Work Plan and Budget for 2026 to further strengthen regional forest fire resilience and livelihood support.

Meeting Chairperson Dr. Dian Sukmajaya highlighted the project's significant contribution to the ASEAN One Billion Trees Growing Initiative, reinforcing the region's collective commitment to sustainable forest management.

The AFoCO Secretariat has concluded a monitoring visit for the NTFP Project in Lào Cai Province, Vietnam. In Lot Village, Phong Hai Commune, 30 community members participated in a workshop on the sustainable management of medicinal NTFPs linked to community-based nature enterprises (CBNEs).

The Vietnamese project team has nearly completed activities related to the two selected commodities—bamboo and morinda. Morinda seedlings have been planted within the community using both conventional seedlings and tissue culture propagation methods which is deemed as one of the most remarkable achievements by Vietnam's NTFP Research Center .

During the visit, the Secretariat also held discussions with the MKCF and SAFE Project teams on project updates for 2025 and the remaining activities scheduled for completion in 2026.

Cover Image: 👩‍🚒 Sand Table Practice for Understanding Fire Behaviour and Campbell Theory 🔥

In this hands-on training, participants work in small teams to recreate real landscapes using sand and to simulate how wildfires spread across different terrains.

1️⃣ The participants shape mountains and valleys out of sand,
2️⃣ use colorful arrows to mark the fire's direction, and
3️⃣ discuss strategies to predict and respond to its spread.

As part of the 3rd Mekong–Korea Forest Fire Symposium (MKFFS) held in Pakse, Lao PDR, participants learned how wind, slope, and fuel interact to influence the speed and direction of fire — applying Campbell Theory to visualize wildfire dynamics. 🌬️🔥🏔️🌲💧
