|Legislative Update|

The government is open—for now—through Jan 30. But service members and families are still dealing with the stress and trauma of the previous shutdown.

AFSA urges Congress to pass full-year appropriations now (and on time every year) so pay, benefits, and support services are never bargaining chips.

Why now: Full-year funding = uninterrupted pay & benefits, timely TRICARE claims, stable PCS/training, childcare & housing progress, and improved quality of life.

AFSA International President | Last Friday, our Air Force Sergeants Association had the privilege of delivering a virtual briefing to First Sergeant Academy Class 26-A, an incredible opportunity to share who we are, what we stand for, and how we continue fighting for our service members and their families, past, present, and future.

If your base has a Shirt Council, lean in and build that partnership. When AFSA and our First Sergeants stand shoulder-to-shoulder, we strengthen the mission and ensure that people remain our top priority.

We must give a huge shout-out to one of our own, Division 6 President, MSgt Justin Peattie, who proudly earned his diamond with Class 26-A! DP Peattie leads with heart, purpose, and authenticity. We know he’s going to wear that diamond well and continue lifting others along the way.

People. Mission. Family. This is AFSA. Together....people are our business!

An Open Letter -- Celebrating 20-Years of Commitment to the Air Force Sergeants Association

Greetings and Happy Friday

Since its founding in 1961, the Air Force Sergeants Association (AFSA) has always focused on one enduring truth — people matter. For more than six decades, AFSA has been the trusted voice and advocate for Quality-of-Life initiatives that support those who have worn the uniform of this great Nation and their families.

For over 20 years, I, Keith Reed, a First Sergeant by calling, have been humbled and honored to serve within this remarkable organization — one that truly embodies servant leadership, unity, and purpose. From my early involvement in 1999 with the planning and ex*****on of the AFSA International Convention, the Professional Airmen’s Conference, and later THE SUMMIT: AFSA’s Professional Education and Development Symposium, I have seen firsthand what makes this Association special. It always comes down to people.

Maslow’s hierarchy of needs remains as true today as ever — people seek belonging, purpose, and the chance to be part of something greater than themselves. AFSA is that something. With over 121 chapters worldwide, AFSA connects people, communities, and causes. Whether it’s supporting base and community initiatives, engaging with base leadership, or volunteering to serve others — our chapters are where the rubber meets the road.

From participating in Senior Airman Below-the-Zone boards, quarterly and annual awards programs, and community cleanups, to honoring our heritage at Memorial and Veterans Day ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery, AFSA gives its members the opportunity to live excellence. Each chapter event, each act of service, each moment of camaraderie represents the heartbeat of this Association.

That is why strength in numbers and engagement at the chapter level are so vital to our mission. Every member, every volunteer, and every leader contributes to the collective power of AFSA’s voice. Together, we ensure that the needs of our Airmen, Guardians, and their families are heard and met — both today and for generations to come.

For over 64 years, AFSA has stood at the forefront of advocacy and action – Forever Present, Forever Persistent and Forever Proactive, AFSA has been leading on all things “Quality.” Even when faced with difficult decisions — like supporting Tri-Care for Life despite its potential impact on our revenue-generating programs — AFSA stood firmly by its principles and its people. That integrity, that unwavering commitment to service before self, is what defines us.

After more than two decades of serving this Association, I remain as passionate today as I was on day one. I am proud to have contributed to AFSA’s legacy of leadership, unity, and service — and I look forward to continuing that mission every day.

At the end of the day, I’m still a First Sergeant — and people are my business.

With great respect and enduring pride.

KEITH A. REED
Chief Executive
