전국민주일반노동조합 서울본부 원어민강사지회 충청분회는 대한민국에서 발생한 계엄령 선포 시도 1주년을 맞아, 민주주의와 독립을 위해 싸우다 희생된 이들의 정신을 기리기 위해 천안 유관순열사기념관을 방문했습니다.

The Native Teachers’ Union in Chungcheong visited the Yu Gwan-sun Memorial in Cheonan to mark the one-year anniversary of the attempted coup in South Korea and to honor the legacy of those who fought and died for Korea's independence and democracy.

유관순 열사는 부당함과 억압 앞에서 침묵을 거부한 평범한 시민들의 용기가 민주주의를 만든다는 것을 우리에게 일깨워 줍니다. 1920년, 겨우 17살의 나이에 대한민국 독립을 외치며 태극기를 배포했다는 이유로 일제의 감옥에서 살해당했습니다. 그녀의 ‘죄’는 자유를 요구한 것이었습니다.

Yu Gwan-sun reminds us that democracy is built by ordinary people who refuse to be silent in the face of injustice. In 1920, at age 17, she was murdered in a colonial prison by Japanese soldiers. Her crime? Handing out Korean flags.

노동자와 교육자로서 우리는 인권, 표현의 자유, 그리고 집단적 행동이 민주사회 구축의 필수적인 토대임을 잘 알고 있습니다. 이 가치는 역사책 속에만 존재해서는 안 되며, 일터와 지역사회, 그리고 우리의 교실에서 실천되고 지켜져야 합니다.

As workers and educators, we recognize that human rights, freedom of speech, and collective action are essential pillars of a democratic society. These values must be defended not only in history books, but in our workplaces, our communities, and our classrooms.

올해 4월 진행된 탄핵 심판을 통해 우리는 헌정 민주주의가 얼마나 쉽게 흔들릴 수 있는지, 그리고 시민과 노동조합, 공동체가 함께 지켜내는 것이 얼마나 중요한지를 다시 한 번 확인했습니다.

With the impeachment upheld in April, the Republic of Korea, which we call home, was reminded how fragile constitutional democracy can be, and how crucial it is for citizens, unions, and communities to defend it together.

민주주의를 위해 단결!
인간의 존엄을 위해 투쟁!
자유를 위해 승리!

We unite today for democracy. We unite for human dignity. We unite for freedom.

Member of the South Chungcheong Provincial Assembly, Kim Seon-tae, recently raised concerns about unequal working conditions for native teachers in Cheonan City and South Chungcheong Province, noting major differences in salary, vacation, benefits, and housing allowances between EPIK teachers and those employed through local governments or universities. He emphasized that inconsistent treatment affects educational quality for students and requested cooperation between agencies to reduce gaps and improve stability.

The Cheonan education superintendent acknowledged the issue and stated that salary increases are planned for next year and welfare improvements will be discussed with the city.

Additional concerns were raised about inefficient teacher rotation assignments across long distances and commute times of teachers placed in multiple schools.

The KGLU Native Teachers' Union in Chungcheong will continue to push for the realization of human rights and the Labor Standards Act for all workers in Korea.

The Native Teachers’ Union and the Parents’ Association for the Realization of Equal Education – Cheonan Chapter (평등교육실현을위한학부모회 천안학부모회, Pyeonghak) held a joint meeting Saturday, Nov. 1, 2025 to discuss education issues affecting local schools.

During the meeting, teachers and parents exchanged views on working conditions, pay, and municipal education ordinances in Cheonan. Teachers outlined the challenges they face in classrooms and workplaces, while parents shared concerns about English education and communication with schools.

Both groups described the meeting as productive and agreed to continue working together to improve teachers’ working environments and promote equitable, high-quality English education for students across the city. Both organizations have agreed to continue with a close relationship and to establish more parent-teacher meetings in the near future.

The Native Teachers’ Union would like to thank Pyeonghak for taking part in the discussion.

전국민주일반노동조합 서울본부 원어민강사지회 충청분회와 평등교육실현을위한학부모회 천안학부모회(이하 ‘평학’)는 2025년 11월 1일(토) 오후, 천안에서 공동 간담회를 열고 지역 학교의 교육 현안에 대해 논의했다.

이번 간담회에서는 강사와 학부모가 천안 지역 학교의 근무 환경, 임금, 조례 등과 관련된 다양한 의견을 나눴다. 강사들은 현장에서 겪는 어려움을 공유했으며, 학부모들은 영어교육과 학교 소통 문제에 대한 의견을 전했다.

양측은 이번 만남이 매우 생산적이었다고 평가하며, 앞으로도 협력 관계를 유지하고 강사 근무 여건 개선과 학생들에게 공평하고 질 높은 영어교육을 제공하기 위해 함께 노력하기로 했다. 또한 정기적인 학부모-강사 간담회를 추가로 마련하기로 합의했다.

전국민주일반노동조합 서울본부 원어민강사지회 충청분회는 이번 논의에 함께해 준 평학에 감사의 뜻을 전했다.

Thank you to all who attended our last Labor Law 101 and Workplace Harassment seminar! We held our final seminar of the year today in Sejong City’s Jongchon-Dong Community Administrative Center. With the conclusion of our 2025 Seminar tour, we managed to provide basic labor education to 45+ teachers in 5 cities around the Chungcheong Provinces! Thank you again to everyone who has come out to learn and support us this year!

We strive to provide top-notch education on labor law, human rights, and workers’ livelihood to all workers in our province. Let’s work together to create a future for us all!

The Native Teachers’ Union in Chungcheong sat down with Member of the South Chungcheong Provincial Assembly, Kim Sun-Tae (Democrat, Cheongryeong Cheonan District) to discuss issues around life as foreigners in Korea and the struggles of wages, worker’s rights, and discrimination. Representative Kim was very responsive to our concerns and pledged to help in every way possible to create a Cheonan City and South Chungcheong Province that respects the labor rights and human rights of foreign teachers and workers.

Thank you Representative Kim for meeting with our union members today.

"You do have rights in this country." We kicked off our first "Labor Law 101" seminar of fall in Seosan, and it was an awesome experience! So many teachers in that small town came for education and left with connections and a strong community. Daejeon is coming up soon. If you want great tips on contract reading, labor laws, and know what is considered harassment in a workplace, we highly recommend you stop by on October 18th at Korea Confederation of Trade Union HQ and get educated. "We can win when we stand up and fight!"

Wishing everyone, Koreans and foreign teachers alike, a warm and peaceful Chuseok. 🌕
For some of us far from home, the holidays can feel quiet, even lonely. But may this season remind us that connection isn’t bound by borders or blood, it’s built through kindness, solidarity, and shared hope.

Let’s keep working toward a future where no one feels left out, and where every home, wherever it may be, can be full of peace and equality. 🕊️💛

Even when employers disappear, solidarity remains. Small victories like these remind us why unions matter. These victories show why standing together matters.

Recently, a member in Cheonan found themselves in a tough spot when their school suddenly and unexpectedly closed its doors. Thanks to union advocacy, the member received a formal reference recognizing their work and professionalism. They received a letter of release, were able to stay in-country, and found support in the union community.

It’s a small win, but it’s a reminder that even when employers disappear, solidarity and support remain.
