Pukyong National University Hosts Tanzania Zanzibar Aquaculture Capacity Building Project (3rd Year Invitational Training Program)

The Pukyong National University International Cooperation Research Center for Marine and Fisheries Development (Director: Prof. Won-Kyu Park) is conducting an invitational training program titled “Capacity Building for Zanzibar Marine Multi-species Hatchery Center on Production of Sea Cucumber, Mud Crab, Milkfish and Live Feed Production in Tanzania” from February 28 to March 13.
The program aims to enhance aquaculture technology capacity for increasing the production of high-value aquaculture species in Zanzibar, Tanzania. This 3rd-year training program follows the 1st-year invitational training and 2nd-year on-site training, providing advanced curriculum based on previous achievements. The program is expected to contribute to the activation of the aquaculture industry in Zanzibar, increase the income of local fishers, and support regional rural economic and social development.

During the training, participants will visit the Busan Fisheries Resources Research Institute, the National Institute of Fisheries Science, the Korea Maritime and Fisheries Training Institute, Raonbada and Suhyup Feed to observe Korea’s aquaculture technology and policy implementation. In addition, visits to Busan Fish Market(Jagalchi Market), Haeundae Marine Tourism Facilities, and Pukyong University training vessel ‘Baekgyeongho’ will provide insights into seafood distribution systems, marine tourism, and human resource development in the marine and fisheries sector.

Pukyong National University Transfers Korea’s Advanced Aquaculture Technology to Tanzania

Pukyong National University (President: Sang-Hoon Bae) has dispatched professors and aquaculture experts to the United Republic of Tanzania to share Korea’s advanced aquaculture technology.

The Ocean and Fisheries Development International Cooperation Institute at Pukyong National University (Director: Professor Wongyu Park) announced that it organized the "Capacity Building for Zanzibar marine Multi-species Hatchery Center on Production of Sea Cucumber, Mud Crab, Milkfish and Alive Production in Tanzania" last August at the marine hatchery facilities in Zanzibar.

Supported by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), the seven-day training program was held from August 10 to 16, with 20 participants, including officials and technicians from the Ministry of Blue Economy and Fisheries of Zanzibar, the State University of Zanzibar, and national research institutes.

Pukyong National University dispatched five aquaculture experts—including professors and researchers from the Busan Fisheries Resources Research Institute—to transfer aquaculture techniques for high-value marine species, such as mud crabs and other crustaceans.

Although Tanzania is a coastal country, it lacks sufficient aquaculture infrastructure and technical capacity, and is therefore pursuing the development of its aquaculture industry through official development assistance (ODA) projects.

As part of a three-year project aimed at increasing the production of high-value aquaculture species in Zanzibar, Pukyong National University conducted an invitational training program last year, followed by this year’s on-site training. Another invitational program is scheduled for next year.

Following the successful completion of the training program, Pukyong National University plans to organize a post-training consulting team composed of experts who participated in the field training. This team will provide monitoring and feedback, while continuing to support the development of aquaculture infrastructure in close cooperation with the Ministry of Blue Economy and Fisheries of Zanzibar.

Professor Wongyu Park, Director of the Ocean and Fisheries Development International Cooperation Institute stated, “With its specialized College of Fisheries Sciences, research institutes, aquaculture laboratories, and professional human resources, as well as its extensive experience in implementing ODA projects in Africa and Pacific island countries, Pukyong National University will continue to play a leading role in transferring Korea’s advanced fisheries technologies to the world.”

Pukyong National University Hosts the “2025 Korea–Overseas Countries Workshop”

The Ocean and Fisheries Development International Cooperation Institute at Pukyong National University (Director: Prof. Won-kyu Park) held the “2025 Korea-Overseas Fisheries Cooperation Workshop” from September 1 to 5 at the Park Hyatt Busan and various locations in Busan.

The workshop, supported by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries under its Overseas Fisheries Cooperation and Human Resources Development Program, was attended by about 20 government officials, researchers, and industry professionals from major overseas fisheries cooperation countries, including Ghana, Mozambique, Nauru, Palau, Bangladesh, and Indonesia.

This workshop, themed “Sustainable Fisheries Cooperation in the Era of Climate Change,” featured special lectures on topics such as:
△ Policy Directions for Fisheries in Response to Climate Change
△ Combating Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing and Sustainable Resource Management
△ Training Program for Korean Fishing Vessel Crew Members

In addition, specialized lectures were delivered by experts from major institutions such as the Korea Maritime Institute, the National Institute of Fisheries Science, and the Korea Institute of Maritime and Fisheries Technology.

Participants visited the Monitoring Center of the East Sea Fisheries Management Service and the National Institute of Fisheries Science, where they observed Korea’s policies and technological initiatives for sustainable fisheries, focusing on the Climate Change Research Division and the Fisheries Engineering Division.

Professor Wongyu Park, Director of The Ocean and Fisheries Development International Cooperation Institute at Pukyong National University, remarked, “This workshop is expected to strengthen mutual understanding and cooperation among participating countries and generate synergies in fostering future human resources. We will continue to advance exchange and training programs for the sustainable development of fisheries.”

"Pukyong National University Hosts Capacity-Building Training Program for Senegalese Maritime and Fisheries Officials"

A total of 15 participants, including Senegalese government officials, attended the program, which was held from September 7 to 19.

The Ocean and Fisheries Development International Cooperation Institute at Pukyong National University (Director: Prof. Park Won-kyu) is conducting an invitational training program titled "Capacity Building for Fisheries Protection and Surveillance Directorate (DPSP) on Monitoring, Control and Surveillance in Senegal" from September 7 to 19.

This program, supported by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), aims to enhance national policy improvements and strengthen implementation capacity to prevent, monitor, and eliminate Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing in Senegal.
Although Senegal is one of the key fishing nations in West Africa, with abundant marine resources, it faces serious challenges such as resource depletion and disruption of fisheries order due to illegal fishing.
To address this, Pukyong National University has invited 15 practitioners, including government officials in the fisheries sector of Senegal, to provide both theoretical and practical training on topics such as:
△ Korea’s anti-IUU fishing policies
△ Fishing monitoring strategies and key case studies
△ Fisheries management using bioeconomic models.

The trainees, in addition to attending theoretical lectures, will participate in field programs, visiting the Monitoring Center of the East Sea Fisheries Management Service, the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST), and the Offshore Fishing Safety and Operations Bureau of the National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives (Suhyup). Through these visits, they will directly observe the policy and technological efforts currently being implemented in Korea to eradicate illegal fishing.

Professor Wongyu Park, Director of the Ocean and Fisheries Development International Cooperation Institute at Pukyong National University, stated, “By sharing Korea’s advanced experiences through this invitational training program, we expect to lay the foundation for establishing a fisheries management system and operating a monitoring framework for sustainable fisheries in Senegal, while also contributing to strengthening fisheries cooperation between Korea and Senegal.”

Pukyong National University (PKNU) is offering scholarships for the Global Partnership Exchange and Capacity Building for Overseas Fisheries program.

This program aims to train high-level specialists to strengthen adaptation and resilience to climate change. Sponsored by the Ministry of Ocean and Fisheries, Republic of Korea, the scholarships are available for the 2026 Spring semester. Applications are now open for incoming students.
