HALO Cambodia welcomes the United Kingdom’s renewed £1.6 million commitment to humanitarian mine action in Cambodia for 2026–2027.
Thanks to this funding, HALO will continue its humanitarian mission of protecting lives and restoring livelihoods for communities affected by conflict across Northwest Cambodia; including the clearance of hazardous land, the destruction of landmines and explosive remnants of war, and the delivery of explosive ordnance risk education in mine-affected communities.
This continued partnership strengthens ongoing efforts to improve community safety, restore access to land, and helps Cambodia achieve its goal of a mine-free future by 2030.

Recently, HALO clearance teams discovered a TM-46 anti-vehicle mine during road clearance in Tadev village, Oddar Meanchey Province. Survey findings indicate that this alignment was used during decades of conflict in Cambodia, where mines such as the TM-46 were laid between 1994 and 1997.
Despite this history, the road has remained in regular use by local communities. While no accidents have been reported, this discovery highlights the ongoing and widespread risk posed by landmines in Cambodia.
The mine was later safely destroyed, making the area safer for those who rely on this route every day. Clearance of the surrounding area is ongoing and, once completed, will benefit over 800 people, thus restoring safe access to land and supporting livelihoods.
Each item removed is a step closer to a future where communities can live, travel, and work without fear. We thank our deminers for their continued dedication to making communities like Tadev village safer.

Today, we mark the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action, established by the United Nations to highlight global efforts to address the dangers posed by landmines and explosive remnants of war.
This year’s theme, “Invest in Peace; Invest in Mine Action,” reflects the vital role mine action plays in building safe and stable communities. Clearing landmines not only saves lives and restores land for farming and development, but it also removes the constant fear many communities live with.
In Cambodia, decades of conflict left many areas contaminated with landmines and explosive remnants of war. In these communities, children walk to school, farmers work their fields, and villagers gather food or medicinal herbs from forests with the risk of hidden explosives beneath their feet. Removing these threats helps restore safety, security, and peace of mind for families.
HALO continues to support Cambodia’s journey toward a mine-free future through mine clearance and explosive ordnance risk education activities. On this day, we thank our longstanding partners and donors whose continued support makes this work possible.

HALO Cambodia has recently completed clearance at Sen Rung Reurng Primary School in Preah Vihear, making the land safe for a new school expansion project.
The task was an urgent clearance request by the Cambodia Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority in support of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports’ General Education Improvement Project. With the area now cleared, construction of a new five-classroom school building can move forward, creating more space for local children to learn.
The land carries a long history linked to Cambodia’s past conflicts which was once used during the Khmer Rouge period and later as a fortified military base in the 1980s, leaving the risk of unexploded ordnance beneath the ground.
HALO’s work goes beyond removing dangerous remnants of war: it directly enables communities to grow, develop, and thrive, turning hazardous land into opportunities for future generations. Every cleared site is a step closer to a safer, brighter Cambodia.

Happy International Women's Day!
This International Women’s Day, we celebrate Sorphea, HALO Cambodia’s Fleet Manager — a role not often held by women, especially in the male-dominated mine action sector, but one she performs better than most.
From humble beginnings in Siem Reap, Sorphea faced enormous challenges: limited opportunities, family responsibilities, and skepticism about women in leadership. Yet, through determination and resilience, she now manages over 100 staff and more than 140 vehicles across 19 provinces, showing that women can thrive in any role.
“I have learned to be resilient and speak with my actions. Women can do whatever they set their minds to!”
Through driving and road safety workshops tailored for HALO’s women staff, Sorphea is empowering women to gain confidence, skills, and opportunities in fields traditionally dominated by men. Her story is a testament to what women can achieve when given the chance to lead.
Today, HALO Cambodia celebrates Sorphea and all women breaking barriers and shaping a mine-free Cambodia.

ក្នុងសប្តាហ៍នេះ អង្គការហេឡូត្រាស្តកម្ពុជា បានប្រារព្ធពិធីសម្ពោធអគារស្នាក់នៅថ្មីសម្រាប់បុគ្គលិកនៅការិយាលួតំបន់ប្រតិបត្តិការអន្លង់វែង ដែលជាការឧទ្ទិសចងចាំដល់លោក Richard Charles Bayliss (១៩៦៥-២០១៥)។

This week, HALO Cambodia marked the opening of a new staff accommodation block in Anlong Veng, dedicated to the memory of Richard Charles Bayliss (1965–2015).
HALO staff gathered for the occasion while members of the Bayliss family joined virtually from the United Kingdom. The event included opening remarks, a ribbon-cutting ceremony, and traditional Buddhist blessings led by local monks. The ceremony concluded with the planting of a tree — a symbol of growth and prosperity for the teams who will live and work here.
Richard played an important role in helping to establish HALO’s work in Cambodia. His commitment and dedication helped lay the foundations for the programme that continues today — protecting lives and restoring livelihoods for communities affected by landmines and explosive remnants of war.
Made possible through the generous contribution of the Bayliss family, this accommodation block stands as a lasting tribute to Richard’s legacy. It will provide safe and dignified living conditions for HALO staff working in this area, many of whom spend long periods in remote locations carrying out the difficult and dangerous work of clearing mines.
For the teams based here, this building represents more than a place to stay. It is a reminder that their work is part of a mission built by people whose dedication helped make HALO Cambodia what it is today.
As HALO’s teams continue working to return land safely to Cambodian communities, Richard’s legacy lives on through the dedication and courage of the deminers who carry this mission forward every day.

Recently, HALO hosted RECOFTC-Cambodia for a training session on community forestry for our survey/explosive ordnance disposal, risk education, and environment teams. The session provided an overview of community forestry in Cambodia, including its legal framework, establishment processes, and key stakeholders. The training strengthened staff understanding of how forested land cleared of explosive ordnance can be sustainably managed and integrated into community forestry initiatives. By building internal capacity in this area, HALO is better positioned to identify environmentally responsible land use opportunities following clearance, supporting long-term community development and sustainable forest management.

ថ្មីៗនេះ អង្គការហេឡូត្រាស្តកម្ពុជា បានសម្រេចនូវសមទ្ធិផលដ៏សំខាន់មួយក្នុងភាពជាដៃគូជាមួយរដ្ឋាភិបាលកាណាដា៖ ចម្ការមីនទី 100 ក្រោមជំនួយរបស់ប្រទេសកាណាដា ត្រូវបានបោសសម្អាតហើយ!

HALO Cambodia recently celebrated an important milestone in its partnership with the Government of Canada: 100 minefields cleared!
Over the years, Canadian-funded teams have cleared a total of 1,387,807 square metres of mine-contaminated land, locating and destroying 214 anti-personnel mines and 24 items of explosive remnants of war. These efforts have restored safe access to land and supported local livelihoods, benefitting over 75,000 people.
Reaching the 100th minefield milestone represents more than an operational achievement. It reflects renewed opportunity for communities where they can now farm, build, and move freely without fear. It is also a testament to the dedication of our deminers working in the field and the strong partnership with Global Affairs Canada.
HALO Cambodia extends its sincere appreciation to Global Affairs Canada for its generous support and continued commitment to humanitarian mine action in Cambodia and around the world. Together, we will continue making land safe.
