On Saturday, 25 April, our founder, Sophal Sea, together with the Smiling Creatives team, met with teachers at Kampong Khleang High School to discuss the“Plastically Possible Student Art Challenge” and the Propeller art projects.

As part of the initiative, the school will form 10 student groups led by 10 assigned teachers to participate in the “Plastically Possible Student Art Challenge,” with their artworks to be exhibited during our annual Water Rising and Inland Ocean Festival in Kampong Khleang on 4–5 June.

At the same time, we also recruited 15 students from our Eco Youth Club to join the Angkor Roo performance team, which uses creative theatre to promote environmental education and awareness.

Our team also continued inspecting event locations and traveled by boat across the lake with local ecotourism community members to help clean the canal beds, ensuring safer boat access and reducing plastic waste entangling propellers. It was an inspiring day filled with collaboration, learning, and community action.

This year’s celebration will feature many exciting activities, including the Tonlé Sap Puppet Parade, Propeller Art and Plastically Possible Student Art Exhibitions, Angkor Roo environmental performances, Community-Based Ecotourism and Fishing Exhibitions, and community clean-up campaigns in celebration of World Environment Day on 5 June.

Khmer New Year Plastic Awareness & Community Clean-Up Campaign 🌿🇰🇭

April marks the celebration of Khmer New Year—one of Cambodia’s most cherished cultural and traditional festivals. In the spirit of welcoming the New Year, our team worked closely with local commune authorities, school teachers, and students to organize plastic clean-up activities and environmental awareness campaigns across the communities of Mechrey, Kampong Phluk, and Kampong Khleang.

April 2
Our dedicated EcoWarriors, together with teachers and students from Mechrey Primary School, joined hands to clean up Peam Ta Uor floating village along the shorelines of the Tonle Sap Lake—helping prepare a clean and healthy environment to welcome the New Year.

April 4 & 10
In Kampong Phluk, our EcoWarriors collaborated with the commune administration and key stakeholders—including tourism operators, local police, schools, and villagers—to carry out large-scale clean-up activities. These efforts extended from within the villages to the lake’s shorelines, strengthening community pride and readiness for the New Year.

April 14–15
During the Khmer New Year celebrations, our team members, commune council representatives, youth volunteers, and police officers led a community-wide awareness campaign. Reaching approximately 3,000 households across 10 villages, they encouraged families to clean their homes and surroundings as part of the tradition of welcoming the New Year Angel—symbolizing prosperity, happiness, and good fortune.

In Khmer tradition, preparing and cleaning homes is an important practice to respectfully welcome the New Year Angel, believed to bring blessings of success and well-being for the year ahead.
We are proud to support these meaningful initiatives alongside our local partners. Through logistical and financial support, we remain committed to promoting environmental responsibility and strengthening community engagement.

The Principal of Mechrey Floating Primary School, together with teachers, continues their educational mission by guiding students to participate in environmental cleanup activities in Peam Ta Uor Floating Village, Keo Poar Commune, Puok District, Siem Reap Province.

This meaningful activity not only helps maintain environmental cleanliness but also fosters a strong sense of environmental stewardship and community responsibility among the younger generation.

The environmental education program and monthly plastic waste cleanup initiative during the Tonle Sap dry season began as part of the annual Water Falling Season Cleanup Campaign in late November 2025 and will continue until the celebration of National Environment Day and World Environment Day on 5 June 2026. 🌿🌏

Yesterday, we had the great honor and pride of receiving the 2026 Environmental Stewardship Recognition Certificate directly from H.E. Dr. Eang Sophalleth, Minister of Environment, during the Environmental Stewardship Operators Encouragement Program held on the afternoon of 31 March 2026 at the Ministry of Environment.

Sea Sophal, President of the Bamboo Shoot Foundation, considers this recognition not only a personal honor, but a shared achievement for all the community members, students, youth, local authorities, armed forces, and both local and international partners who have actively supported and participated in environmental education, community cleanups, and plastic waste reduction efforts—especially in the Tonle Sap communities of Siem Reap Province.

This recognition also serves as meaningful encouragement for us to continue working closely with communities and partners to support the implementation of the Environmental Circular Strategy, which focuses on Cleanliness, Greenness, and Sustainability.

We firmly believe that small actions within communities can lead to significant change for our country—moving Cambodia toward a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future for present and future generations. 🌱🇰🇭

The Kampong Khleang Monthly Community Cleanup Movement is a growing grassroots initiative that mobilizes local authorities, youth, and community members to protect the fragile ecosystem of Tonle Sap Lake. The movement takes place during the last weekend of each month and was officially launched on 28 January 2026, with generous support from our partners and supporters including Rivers.Global and Ocean Recovery Alliance.

Since the launch, the initiative has continued to gain momentum, with successful cleanup events held on 28 February and 28 March 2026. These activities have brought together strong participation from the District Governor and his administration, commune council members, the local ecotourism community, teachers, and students. Altogether, approximately 350 participants have joined the monthly cleanups, demonstrating a shared commitment to protecting the environment and improving community well-being.
Beyond removing waste, the movement focuses on long-term environmental awareness and behavior change. Volunteers actively engage with residents through door-to-door outreach, encouraging households to participate in maintaining a cleaner environment. Families that demonstrate commitment to proper waste management and community participation will be recognized and certified as “Clean Family Role Models.”

Youth leadership is a key pillar of the initiative. During the most recent cleanup event, Mr. Kim Vannak presented 30 bicycles donated by charitable supporters to the Eco Youth Club at Kampong Khleang High School. These bicycles will enable student volunteers to travel more easily between villages and support environmental outreach across the community.

Recently, 100 students were selected to join the Eco Youth Club, where they will receive environmental education, leadership training, and practical experience in community engagement. The students will be organized into 10 teams, each assigned to work with one of the 10 villages in Kampong Khleang. Through this structure, the youth will become environmental ambassadors, leading awareness campaigns and supporting local action for a cleaner community.

In the coming months, the students will launch the “Kampong Khleang Cleanup Challenge,” visiting households to inspire families to join the cleanup movement and adopt environmentally responsible practices. Households that actively participate will be recognized as “Clean Family Role Models,” helping to build pride and long-term ownership within the community.

The movement will continue to expand in the months ahead and will culminate on June 5, in celebration of World Environment Day. This milestone will also contribute to honoring Tonle Sap Lake — the “Inland Ocean” of Cambodia — during the Inland Ocean Festival, highlighting the importance of community action in protecting one of Southeast Asia’s most vital freshwater ecosystems.

🌿 Kampong Khleang Community Prepares to Welcome Miss Planet International Delegates from Over 50 Countries

On the afternoon of March 3, 2026, Mr. Kim Vannak, Governor of Sotr Nikum District, together with members of the District Council, and Mr. Sea Sophal, Founder of NGO2 BambooShoot Foundation and Head of the Environment and Community Committee of the Cambodia Tourism Association – Siem Reap Chapter, representing Lok Chumteav Oknha Chhay Sivlin, President of the Cambodia Tourism Association, conducted a site visit to review and prepare the venue for the upcoming international visit.

On the morning of March 10, 2026, the Miss Planet International delegates from more than 50 countries will visit Kampong Khleang Community, Sotr Nikum District, Siem Reap Province, to experience community-based tourism and environmental activities. The program will include palm tree planting and an opportunity to learn about the daily lives and livelihoods of local fishing families living on the Tonle Sap Lake.

The preparation meeting was also attended by the Chief of Kampong Khleang Commune Council, the Head of Kampong Khleang Community-Based Ecotourism, and the Principal of Kampong Khleang High School, who joined discussions to coordinate plans and ensure the community is ready to warmly welcome the international delegates.

Today, February 28, 2026 – Kampong Khleang Monthly Cleanup
The Kampong Khleang Commune Administration and the Community-Based Ecotourism Committee, together with the chiefs of 10 villages, local residents, teachers, and students, conducted our monthly cleanup activity—held at the end of each month since the official Plastic Cleanup Kickoff Event on January 28, 2026.

This important movement was initiated with main sponsorship from our partner Rivers.Global and with the valued support of the District Governor of Sotr Nikom.

👩 Women participants: 388
♻️ Plastic waste collected: 3,500 kg
Our cleanup campaign will continue every month leading up to the celebration of World Environment Day on June 5th.

Our goal is clear: to transform Kampong Khleang into a responsible and attractive ecotourism destination—creating cleaner surroundings, strengthening community pride, and generating additional income opportunities for local families beyond fishing.
