Prajnaparamita as a Female Bodhisattva
Prajnaparamita is a female bodhisattva who holds great importance in Mahayana Buddhism. This bodhisattva represents boundless wisdom. She can be identified by the presence of Amitabha Buddha on her hair crown, similar to Avalokiteshvara.
Sometimes, Prajnaparamita is depicted with two arms, holding attributes such as a lotus flower and a sacred scripture. In other representations, she may have multiple heads and arms and be depicted in a standing or kneeling posture.
At the end of the 12th century and the beginning of the 13th century, representations of Prajnaparamita began to appear, and images of this bodhisattva were widely disseminated throughout the Khmer Empire.
In particular, Ta Prohm Temple, one of the major Mahayana Buddhist temples, was constructed during the reign of King Jayavarman VII in the late 12th century, around 1186 CE. The temple was dedicated to the king’s mother, Jayarajacudamani, who was represented in the form of Prajnaparamita.
According to the inscription on the stela at Ta Prohm Temple, because Prajnaparamita was considered an important deity, the king enshrined her in the sacred sanctuary of the central tower. He also installed 260 statues around the central temple.
Through various archaeological excavations conducted by the APSARA National Authority in Angkor region, specialists have continuously discovered fragments of Prajnaparamita statues. In 2001, among a total of 274 sculptural fragments, archaeologists also discovered fragments of the torso and head of a Prajnaparamita statue. These fragments are currently displayed at the Preah Norodom Sihanouk-Angkor Museum.
