KAKO is an officially registered local non-profit, non-governmental, and non-political organization based in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Its goal is to reduce illiteracy and improve health, thus empowering villagers to break the debilitating cycle of poverty in which they are currently trapped. KAKO believes that this is the key to sustainable development and to achieve this goal, they seek to make non-f
ormal and health education available to vulnerable families in rural Cambodia. KAKO's projects operate in 21 villages and include:
- Basic Education - provides pre-school, primary school, and adult literacy education to villagers who would otherwise not have access. This program includes village libraries, in which vital educational resources can be accessed by students and community members
- Scholarships - provides support to poor students whose parents cannot afford school fees, text books, uniforms and other school supplies; or who would otherwise require their children to contribute to the family income.
- Basic Health - provides schools and communities with training on basic health, hygiene, sanitation, and environmental issues as well as sanitation facilities such as toilets.
- Supporting Activities - teaches agricultural skills to villagers and provides them with vegetable and rice seeds and agriculture equipment. KAKO also offers microloans to families for chicken raising and other income-generating activities. This program also provides capacity building support to school teachers through meetings, trainings, workshops and seminars on classroom management, teaching techniques, and agricultural methods.
