In Kruger National Park, South Africa, veteran ranger Sipho Nkosi suffered a heart attack while on solo patrol. His vehicle was found empty, and search teams began looking for him.

What the park’s remote trail cameras revealed broke the hearts of everyone who saw the footage.

An old bull elephant — known to rangers as “Mnumzane” (Zulu for “Sir”) — had found Sipho’s body. For three full days and nights, the elephant refused to leave. He stood guard, gently touching the ranger with his trunk, chasing away hyenas and jackals that came too close, and even covering parts of the body with branches and leaves.

On the third night, the elephant was still there — visibly grieving, swaying slowly beside his fallen friend. Only when the full recovery team arrived with vehicles did Mnumzane finally step back, watching solemnly as they carried Sipho away.

Park officials later confirmed that Sipho had rescued this same elephant as a calf years earlier after poachers killed his mother. The elephant had never forgotten.

One colleague who viewed the footage whispered:

“He didn’t come to say goodbye. He came to make sure no one disrespected his brother.”

Mnumzane still visits the exact spot regularly. Rangers now leave fresh water and fruit there in honor of both.

On May 9, 2016, during the Global Big Day, SVC guides visited several birding hotspots to collect data. This year, we chose the Phnom Krom Wetland as our survey site. It was a delightful experience — the wetland was alive with activity, and we enjoyed observing a wide variety of resident species. By this time of year, most of the wintering birds had already departed for their breeding grounds, which made the presence of so many local residents even more special.
Here are some checklists from our team.

សត្វក្បាលធំទ្រូងក្រហម
វិស្សមកាលរបស់ពួកគេគឺប្រហែល 12 000-15 000KM.
The Oriental Plover breeds in Mongolia and northern China, then migrates south to spend the non-breeding season in Australia, New Guinea, and parts of Southeast Asia—including Cambodia, where you sometimes see them during migration stopovers. Their presence in Cambodia usually means they are resting and feeding on open grasslands or dry fields while en route to their wintering grounds.
Cambodia lies along their migration corridor.
They stop in open dry fields, rice stubble, and grasslands to rest and feed before continuing south.
Sightings in Cambodia are usually seasonal (March–April and September–October), coinciding with their northward and southward migrations.
Their presence is a sign of healthy migratory pathways and suitable stopover habitats in Cambodia.
“Yesterday 26th March 2026, our guiding team led by Mr. Mony visited the Bengal Florican Grasslands in Kampong Thom Province. During the visit, they captured images of the Oriental Plover, a migratory bird now making its return journey to breeding grounds in Mongolia and northern China after spending the non-breeding season in Australia. This sighting highlights Cambodia’s role as an important stopover site along the species’ remarkable migration route.”

A Wildlife Odyssey: From the Northern Plains to the Mighty Mekong
Our recent four-day tour was a spectacular success! Led by our lead guide, Mr. Mardy Sean, we had the pleasure of hosting a client from Australia on a journey through some of Cambodia’s most vital conservation landscapes.

The adventure began in the Bengal Florican Conservation Areas, where we tracked one of the world's rarest bustards. From there, we ventured into the Northern Plains, the legendary "Land of the Giants," to find both the Giant Ibis and the White-shouldered Ibis.

We concluded this magnificent circuit at the Mekong River, where the group enjoyed sightings of the Mekong Wagtail and the iconic, critically endangered Irrawaddy Dolphins.
Trip Highlights

With a total of 162 bird species recorded, the highlights were truly world-class:
Giant Ibis
Bengal Florican (Critically Endangered)
White-shouldered Ibis (Critically Endangered)
Mekong Wagtail (Regional Endemic)
White-rumped Falcon
Siberian Rubythroat
Rufous-bellied Woodpecker
Black-headed Woodpecker
Black-browed Reed Warbler

A huge thank you to our guests for choosing to support community-based ecotourism. Every trip helps protect these rare species and their habitats!

A fantastic day of birding at Prek Toal with our clients from the USA! Led by SVC Guide Peou (William), this tour took our clients to this globally important conservation site, located at the core of the Tonle Sap Biosphere Reserve. We saw all of our target birds, including Greater Adjutant, Lesser Adjutant, Milky Stork, Painted Stork, Oriental Darter, Spot-billed Pelican, and more of other species.
Prek Toal offers an excellent opportunity for birdwatching and seeing rare waterbird species. The dry season is an excellent time to visit due to the abundance of waterbirds."
