Call for Proposals: New England Conference of the Association for Asian Studies 2026

The Center for Khmer Studies (CKS) is pleased to share this call for proposals for the New England Conference of the Association for Asian Studies, 2026, hosted by Smith College on Saturday, November 14, 2026.

Under the theme “Border Crossings,” the conference welcomes proposals on Asia-related topics, including research that explores geographic, disciplinary, conceptual, human, and nonhuman borders. Proposals on any Asia-related topic are also welcome, whether or not they directly relate to the conference theme.

Abstract submissions are open until July 15, 2026. Registration will open on September 1, 2026.

Hear from Re Yunan, a 2025 CKS-Ponlok Chomnes Research Fellow, as he reflects on his experience with the Ponlok Chomnes Research Fellowship Program at the Center for Khmer Studies (CKS). In this video, Yunan shares his research journey on public health and migrant workers, the support he received through mentorship and technical workshops, and the importance of communicating research findings clearly to a wider audience.

The Center for Khmer Studies is pleased to invite you to the webinar “Mining Landscapes of Ancient Cambodia: Research, Documentation, and Preservation.”

This lecture by Dr. Sébastien Clouet will examine the mining and metallurgical landscapes of ancient Cambodia, with a particular focus on the Chhaep region in Preah Vihear Province—one of the largest known premodern mining complexes in mainland Southeast Asia. Drawing on archaeological survey, spatial analysis, and archaeometric methods, the presentation will explore long-term copper production, regional resource networks, and the urgent need to document and protect these endangered heritage sites before agricultural expansion, deforestation, and modern mining activities erase this invaluable historical record. The session will be moderated by Emeritus Professor George Chigas (University of Massachusetts Lowell)

Preserving Cambodia's Audiovisual Heritage: The Cambodia Dream Documentary Collection

The Center for Khmer Studies (CKS) is pleased to announce the recovery and safe transfer of 72 Betacam master tapes from filmmaker Stanley Harper's Cambodia Dream documentary project (2009?). Retrieved from the UNHCR Bangkok Office, where they faced the risk of being discarded, these irreplaceable materials represent an important part of Cambodia's fragile audiovisual history.

The effort was made possible through a collaboration between the Center for Khmer Studies and the Bophana Center, with special thanks to archivist Christopher Graves for recognizing the collection's exceptional value and facilitating its transfer. The tapes are now safely housed at the Bophana Center, where they are being inventoried before undergoing digitization and public archiving for research and education. This recovery ensures that a firsthand record of Cambodia's recent history will endure for future generations.

The programs include faculty development seminars, enrichment programs, and the Faculty Leadership for International Training and Exchange (FLITE) program. The 2027 FLITE seminar, “Cambodia | History, Society, and Culture,” will take place in Cambodia in partnership with CKS.

These opportunities support international education, cross-cultural learning, and academic exchange through seminars, site visits, workshops, and experiential learning.

The Center for Khmer Studies (CKS) is now accepting applications for the 2026 Ponlok Chomnes Research Fellowship (PCRF) program. This 15-week program is designed to strengthen academic research capacity, provide mentorship opportunities, and foster peer-to-peer research collaboration.

Eligible applicants include early-career researchers and Cambodian master’s students or recent graduates in the social sciences, humanities, and interdisciplinary fields enrolled in universities in Cambodia.

The PCRF offers a balanced mix of theoretical and practical training, combining in-class lectures, capacity-building workshops, guest speakers, mentorship, field trips, and public presentations.

Fellowship Duration: August 1 – November 14, 2026
Application Deadline: May 31, 2026
