In our Meet the Team series, we're excited to introduce Lumor, one of our Drivers! 🚙💛

For an organisation that spends so much time working in communities across Siem Reap Province, our drivers are an essential part of our Outreach Team. Lumor doesn't just get our teams safely where they need to go—he gets involved, lends a hand, and helps make our work possible.

What do you love most about your job?
I love taking our teams into the field, where together we can support communities, families, and children.

What keeps you motivated?
Seeing children with disabilities make progress. It makes me really happy and motivates me to continue doing this work.

Skills developed
I've learned so much since joining Safe Haven! I've learned how to help install wheelchairs and specialised car seats so children can travel safely. I've also developed new computer skills and learned how to use Google Calendar.

While much of Safe Haven’s work takes place through outreach visits across Siem Reap Province, our support doesn’t stop at the provincial border. Children and families from other provinces can also travel to the Safe Haven Centre to access our services.

Recently, two families made extraordinary journeys to reach us — one travelling more than 550km from Pursat and another over 230km from Battambang — so their children could be assessed and fitted with WHO-approved wheelchairs from Wheelchairs for Kids Australia. These journeys are not easy. With assistance from Safe Haven, they take time, money, planning and a huge amount of commitment from families who are already managing the daily challenges of caring for a child with a disability. But they make the journey because they know what the right wheelchair can mean for their child: greater comfort, better positioning, improved mobility, more independence and the opportunity to participate more fully in everyday life.
We are continually inspired by the dedication of the families we work with and the lengths they will go to give their children every opportunity to live a fuller, more comfortable and more independent life.

Our vehicles aren't simply a way to get from one place to another. They are what make our outreach work possible. They take our nurses, physiotherapists, early intervention and social work teams into rural communities to provide care to children with disabilities in their own homes.

We are incredibly grateful to share that our **Drive Hope Forward** campaign has now raised more than USD $25,000! 💙

Since the fire destroyed our Mobile Clinic Van and severely damaged our Outreach Truck, we have been incredibly fortunate to have vehicles loaned to us so our teams can continue reaching children and families.

At the end of this month, we have to return the car we have been borrowing.

We are also hopeful that very soon we will be able to order our new Mobile Clinic Van. Insurance is covering part of the replacement cost, but unfortunately, it does not cover everything. 🌟 Meet the Team at Safe Haven🌟

In our Meet the Team series, we're introducing another member of our Nursing Team, whose passion for outreach healthcare is grounded in a simple belief: supporting families isn't about charity—it's about empowerment.

𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙙𝙤 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙡𝙤𝙫𝙚 𝙢𝙤𝙨𝙩 𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙟𝙤𝙗?
Providing essential healthcare to people who need it most, particularly vulnerable families. I love outreach healthcare because we can bring services directly to families while empowering caregivers with the knowledge and confidence to care for their children with disabilities.

Support shouldn't create dependence. We should always be thinking about sustainability and helping families become stronger and more confident for the future.

𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙠𝙚𝙚𝙥𝙨 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙢𝙤𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙙?
I'm inspired by the incredible commitment of families—particularly those caring for not just one, but sometimes two or three family members with disabilities.

I come to work knowing that our families are just as motivated as I am to improve the quality of life of their children and themselves. Hope is a guiding light through the journey of life, but ultimately, it's the smiles of our clients that bring me back every day.

𝙎𝙠𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙨 𝙙𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙡𝙤𝙥𝙚𝙙
I've developed a much deeper understanding of the many different types of disability and the individual support each person may need.

Disability is not always visible, and people with disabilities should never be defined by assumptions of dependence. Every person is different, and meaningful empowerment looks different for every individual. Through our work at Safe Haven, I hope we can continue challenging stereotypes about disability in Cambodia.

💙 Care, Wherever Home Is
When our team visited families displaced from the Khmer–Thai border to provide food and school supplies, we met a mother who quietly asked us if we could help her little girl.

She was worried because her daughter could not sit or walk on her own and needed much more support than the family had been able to access.

And yes — eight months after leaving their homes, there are still families living in displacement camps, waiting for the day they can return home and rebuild their lives.

A few days after meeting this family, our team returned to spend time with them, listen to Mum, assess her daughter’s needs and begin making a plan together.
What stood out most was the love surrounding this little girl. Despite everything the family has been through, her mother continues to hold her close, encourage her, play with her and do everything she can to keep her comfortable and safe.
Safe Haven continues visiting the family each month, bringing physiotherapy, nursing care, practical support and encouragement directly to where they are staying.

For this family, that first meeting was more than an assessment. It was the beginning of knowing they are not facing this journey alone.

Even though Marady is moving on from Safe Haven and returning to the big city, we still had to share her words as part of our Meet the Team series. Marady has been a valued member of our Physiotherapy Team, and we are grateful for the care, compassion, and dedication she has given to the children and families she has worked alongside.

What do you love most about your job?
Helping children improve their movement, gain independence, and participate more fully in their daily lives. Even the smallest progress can make a meaningful difference—and seeing those achievements brings me so much happiness.

What keeps you motivated?
The strength, patience, and determination of the children and families we work with. At Safe Haven, our work isn't only about therapy; it's also about giving children and their families hope, dignity, and support.

Skills developed
I've strengthened my clinical reasoning and learned how to adapt physiotherapy to each child's individual needs. I've also developed my communication and teamwork skills through working closely with children, caregivers, families, and other members of our multidisciplinary team.

What success looks like for you?
Success isn't only about achieving big physical milestones. A child becoming a little more independent, participating in a daily activity, or a parent feeling more confident in supporting their child are all successes. Every step forward matters.

Just weeks ago, a devastating fire destroyed our Mobile Clinic Van and severely damaged our Outreach Truck.

The response from our community was immediate and overwhelming. 💙

Support came from around the world, but we have been especially touched by the generosity of our Cambodian community. Fellow NGOs loaned us vehicles, and a family generously lent us their own car so we could continue reaching children with disabilities across rural Siem Reap.

Our team has also done everything possible to keep going. They've travelled countless kilometres on motorbikes, worked longer days, and continued visiting families despite heavy rain, rough roads and the challenges of the wet season.

But these solutions are only temporary.

Now that our insurance claim has been finalised, we know exactly what is needed to get back on the road.

នៅសេហ្វហេវិនយើងបានជឿជាក់ថា ការចែករំលែកចំណេះដឹង និងបទពិសោធន៍ គឺជាមូលដ្ឋានដ៏សំខាន់ក្នុងការពង្រឹងគុណភាពសេវាកម្ម និងការគាំទ្រដល់កុមារដែលមានពិការភាព និងគ្រួសាររបស់ពួកគេ។

នាពេលថ្មីៗនេះ ក្រុមអ្នកគ្រូពេទ្យព្យាបាលដោយចលនារបស់យើង បានចូលរួមផ្លាស់ប្តូរការសិក្សាជាមួយអង្គការកុមារក្នុងគ្រួសារ (CIF) នៅខេត្តកំពង់ឆ្នាំង។ ក្នុងអំឡុងពេលទស្សនកិច្ចនេះ គាត់បានសិក្សាអំពីការស្តារតាមសហគមន៍ (Community-Based Rehabilitation – CBR) ជួយការគាំទ្រដល់អ្នកថែទាំ ប្រព័ន្ធបញ្ជូនបន្តទៅកាន់សេវាឯកទេស និងការប្រើប្រាស់ឧបករណ៍ជំនួយដែលផលិតពីសម្ភារៈក្នុងស្រុកប្រកបដោយភាពច្នៃប្រឌិត ដើម្បីជួយកុមារឱ្យមានភាពឯករាជ្យកាន់តែប្រសើរ។

បន្ទាប់ពីត្រឡប់មកវិញ ចំណេះដឹង និងបទពិសោធន៍ដែលទទួលបាន ត្រូវបានចែករំលែកជាមួយក្រុមគ្រូពេទ្យព្យាបាលដោយចលនារបស់សេហ្វហេវិន ដែលបានជំរុញឱ្យមានការពិភាក្សាអំពីគំនិតថ្មីៗ ដំណោះស្រាយជាក់ស្តែង និងវិធីសាស្ត្រក្នុងការពង្រឹងសេវាកម្មផ្សព្វផ្សាយ និងគាំទ្រតាមសហគមន៍ឱ្យកាន់តែមានប្រសិទ្ធភាព។

At Safe Haven, we believe that sharing knowledge helps us provide even better support for children with disabilities and their families.

Recently, one of our physiotherapists took part in a learning exchange with Children In Families (CIF) in Kampong Chhnang. During the visit, they learned about community-based rehabilitation, supporting caregivers, referral pathways to specialised services, and creative, locally made assistive equipment that helps children become more independent.

Back at Safe Haven, these insights were shared with our Physiotherapy Team, encouraging discussions about new ideas, practical solutions, and ways we can continue strengthening our outreach services.

A big thank you to CIF for welcoming our team and generously sharing your knowledge and experience. By learning from one another, we can continue improving the care, opportunities, and quality of life for children with disabilities across Cambodia. 💙
