[Opinion] Why Gender-Responsive Climate Change Matters🍀

Climate change is not gender-neutral. Its impacts are shaped by existing inequalities, meaning women, girls, and gender-diverse people often face greater risks during climate-related disasters. In many communities, they are responsible for securing water, food, and caring for families—roles that become heavier during droughts, floods, and extreme weather.

Gender inequality also limits access to land, resources, education, and decision-making power. As a result, those most affected by climate change are often excluded from shaping the solutions. This weakens climate responses and deepens social injustice.

Gender-responsive climate action recognizes these realities. It ensures that climate policies, programs, and financing address different needs, reduce inequalities, and meaningfully include women, girls, Indigenous peoples, and marginalized genders. When diverse voices are included, climate solutions become more effective, sustainable, and rooted in local knowledge.

Addressing climate change without a gender lens risks leaving people behind. Gender-responsive climate action is not optional—it is essential for climate justice, resilience, and a sustainable future for all.
