Cambodia Organization for Social Development, COSD

Cambodia Organization for Social Development, COSD My name is Son Sorm and I come from a small farming community about 40 km outside of Siem Reap. For generations my family has depended on farming for survival.

My entire life has been about just that – survival. I am the founder of COSD school.

COSD is the bridge for the children to walk on from side to side of the deep river , it is an ignorance ( without getting an education).

I do not know why but sometimes I like to question myself whether what I do is having an impact or not. So, I found some answers here:
It is completely natural to sometimes look at the day-to-day work and wonder if it is truly shaking the ground beneath you, especially when you are in the thick of managing so many moving parts. But when you step back and look at the actual footprint of the Cambodia Organization for Social Development (COSD school), the impact on the Prey Thmei and Siem Reap community is incredibly tangible.

Here is a reflection of the real, measurable impact being made:

1. Breaking Barriers to Critical Skills
In today’s world, English proficiency and computer literacy are the ultimate gateways to higher education and stable, well-paying careersβ€”especially in a tourism and tech-driven hub like Siem Reap. By offering free classes from Kindergarten to Advanced English, alongside essential Microsoft Office training, COSD is giving local children tools they literally cannot access otherwise. You aren't just teaching lessons; you are leveling the playing field for kids who would otherwise be left behind in the digital economy.

2. Physical and Structural Growth
Impact isn't just an abstract feeling; sometimes it’s built of bricks and mortar. Look at the physical growth of the school. Standing up two brand-new classrooms earlier this year means more physical space, which translates directly into more minds reached, smaller class sizes, and a safer, more inspiring environment for the kids to learn. Every square foot of that expansion represents another child who gets a seat in a classroom.

3. A Safe, Joyful Community Hub
A school’s impact is measured in the memories and safety it provides. Hosting major community events, like the pre-Khmer New Year celebration, transforms the school into a vital cultural and social anchor for the village. Furthermore, organizing experiential learning tripsβ€”like taking the students to see Kompong Pluk and Bakong Templeβ€”gives these children horizons beyond their immediate neighborhoods. You are fostering a sense of pride, joy, and identity.

4. A Bridge to the Global Community
By successfully bringing in international volunteers through global networks and partnering with donor contacts like Martin Heimberg, COSD serves as a bridge. You are connecting a rural Cambodian village with the rest of the world. This doesn't just bring resources; it exposes the students to different cultures and global perspectives, expanding what they believe is possible for their own futures.

5. Local Empowerment and Inspiring Others
The impact isn't just on the students; it's on the team and the university groups (like the TverMerl team) who see what you are doing and want to support it. When local institutions invest their time, books, and resources into your vision, it means COSD has successfully created a culture of giving back and community solidarity.

The Reality Check:
When you are fixing technical issues, coordinates schedules, managing tight budgets, and dealing with daily logistics, it’s easy to feel like you're just managing an organization. But to the kid who just learned how to type, the student who can now speak to a foreign volunteer, and the community that gathered to celebrate the New Year under your roofβ€”COSD is a life-changing turning point.

You and your team are building a foundation that will support these kids for decades. The seeds you are planting right now take time to grow, but make no mistake: the roots are already deep.

β™₯ Heartfelt Gratitude to Kambodscha-Kinderhilfe-Verein e.V. Deutschland

We are thrilled to announce the official completion of our two new classrooms! This milestone was made possible through the incredible generosity and support of Mr. Martin and the Kambodscha-Kinderhilfe-Verein e.V. Deutschland.

These new spaces are more than just buildings; they represent new opportunities, brighter futures, and a better environment for our students to learn and grow. We cannot thank Mr. Martin enough for his dedication to empowering our youth through education.

Thank you for believing in our mission! πŸ‡°πŸ‡πŸ‡©πŸ‡ͺ
