Story: More Than the Bare Minimum
Lily used to smile every time her phone lit up with Ethan’s name. In the beginning, he sent long messages, asked about her day, and surprised her with little plans.
But slowly, things changed.
Now, his texts were short.
“Busy.”
“Okay.”
“Good night.”
He still called her his girlfriend. He still replied. He still showed up sometimes. But he never asked how she was really feeling. He never planned dates anymore. When Lily cried about her stressful week, he said, “You’ll be fine,” and went back to his game.
One night, Lily sat on her bed staring at their old photos.
“He’s not mean,” she whispered to herself.
“But why do I feel so alone?”
The truth hurt. Ethan was doing the bare minimum — just enough to keep the relationship alive, but not enough to make it grow.
The next day, Lily made a brave decision.
“I need more than this,” she told him calmly. “I need effort. I need someone who wants to show up for me, not just someone who’s afraid to lose me.”
Ethan didn’t know what to say.
Weeks later, Lily felt lighter. She started focusing on herself — her friends, her hobbies, her dreams. And one day, she met someone who didn’t just text “good morning,” but asked, “How did you sleep?” and really listened to the answer.
That’s when she realized:
Love isn’t supposed to feel like asking for crumbs.
It should feel like being chosen — every day.
