Meet our new director: Jeanette Dijkstra

We proudly present Jeanette Dijkstra as our new Director. After many years in the international humanitarian sector, Jeanette returns to the Netherlands to lead the Eye Care Foundation.

Jeanette has been active in the international humanitarian and development sector in the last 20 years. She worked on access to water (WASH), urban governance, microfinance and social housing in roles as operations manager, institutional fund raiser and interim manager.

For the last 10 years, she has been Country Director for the Mines Advisory Group (MAG) in Azerbaijan and Angola, where she focused on humanitarian mine and weapons control. Her experience with complex missions seamlessly connects to our ambition.

Jeanette about her new role:

"Driven by our values: professional, compassionate, inclusive and with integrity we make thoughtful choices and realize maximum impact." ”

Together with our teams in Asia and Africa, we are putting her vision into action: preventing and curing unnecessary blindness worldwide.

Anlong Veng is the main town (and a district) in Oddar Meanchey province in the remote northern area of Cambodia - approximately 450 kilometres from the capital Phnom Penh. In 2018 the population of the district was estimated to be in excess of 70,000. The Eye Care Foundation (ECF), in partnership with the National Program for Eye Health (NPEH), is proud to have been supporting eye health services in the district for many years. However, the mobile eye camps, conducted in Anlong Veng in the past week, have been of specific significance due to the recent border conflict restricting access for organisations to provide much needed services for the most disadvantaged communities.
ECF, in cooperation with the NPEH, along with representatives from the Provincial Health Department, Operational District and Referral Hospitals, as well as District and Commune authorities, conducted vision screening for over 300 people resulting in 150 people receiving sight-restoring cataract surgery and 30 other surgeries such as pterygium. Many others will be supplied with spectacles and referrals for additional eye health treatment.
The ECF team and the eye health medical team met with the Deputy District Governor, Operational District Director, the Director of the Referral Hospital as well as the Commune Chief to discuss the value of the mobile eye camps and how important the continuation of this support is to the community. Ms Nak Kamol, Deputy District Governor stated that having the team come to Anlong Veng has restored the confidence of the people, especially those who had to flee the area during the recent unrest. Now they feel that it is safe to return to their homeland and the fact that they have their sight restored means so much in terms of their preparedness and security for the future.
The Commune Chief was one of the patients who received cataract surgery for both eyes. He enthusiastically agreed with the additional implications of this mobile eye camp. He shared that he was nervous about coming to have surgery. Nevertheless, he realised how important it was for him, as Commune Chief to set an example for his citizens. After specialist surgeon Doctor Kak Kakada, operated on the Chief’s left eye, he recommended he return the following day to have the surgery on his right eye. The Chief announced that he was thrilled with being able to see clearly the very next day and delighted with the professionalism and care of the Cambodian medical team. He pledged to ensure that everyone in his community who needed their eyes checked would attend the next mobile eye camp and implored the Eye Care Foundation to continue supporting this critical service in Anlong Veng.

This week is World Optometry Week, and the theme is “A Shared Vision: Collaboration in Global Eye Care.” 🤝

At Eye Care Foundation, we believe that sharing knowledge is the key to lasting change. We are incredibly proud to celebrate the many optometrists whose training we have honorably funded over the years.

Today, these specialists have become the backbone of optometry in their home countries. They are growing as leaders in their fields—sharing their expertise in refractive errors, low vision, pediatric eye disease, and so much more.

Sharing knowledge. Backing one another. Working together. Together, we deliver better outcomes for the people we care for every day. Stay tuned to read more about our proud optometrists!

Did you know that glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness worldwide?

What makes it so dangerous is the lack of warning signs. In its early stages, it often has no symptoms. By the time you notice a change in your vision, the damage may already be permanent.

This World Glaucoma Week, we have one vital reminder: early detection is the only way to prevent vision loss. Regular eye exams aren't just a routine—they can save your sight.
