Introduction
The Don Bosco Children Fund (DBCF) Annual Staff Meeting was successfully held at Don Bosco Sihanoukville from 10th to 12th February. The three-day gathering brought together the director and staff members for reflection, planning, collaboration, and team building. The meeting provided an important opportunity to review the mission of DBCF, strengthen teamwork, and set a clear direction for the year ahead. Each day focused on different themes that supported both the professional and personal growth of the staff while reinforcing the organization’s commitment to the young people and communities it serves.
10 February – Reflection and Strategic Discussions
The first day of the meeting was dedicated to reflection on the Rector Major’s letter to the Salesian Family, commonly referred to as the Strenna for 2026. The key message of the letter emphasized four guiding actions: look, listen, choose, and act. Staff members spent the entire day engaging with these themes and exploring how they apply to both their personal lives and their responsibilities within DBCF.
The reflection encouraged staff to look attentively at the realities of the young people they serve, listen carefully to their needs and challenges, choose actions aligned with the Salesian mission, and act with commitment and compassion. Through group discussions and personal sharing, participants were able to express how these principles influence their daily work and decision-making. Staff reflected on how their roles impact students and volunteer staff and discussed ways to improve their approach to ensure that their service remains meaningful and effective.
On the same day, the director and staff had a meeting with Ms. Heleen Haringman and Mrs. Ellen Loontjens from Don Bosco Children Fund Netherlands, with Mr. Hector Loontjens also present. This meeting focused on procedures, guidelines, and strengthening collaboration between the Cambodian team and their partners in the Netherlands. Heleen and Ellen expressed appreciation for the dedication and achievements of the DBCF staff and congratulated them on their successful work with the Christmas mail initiative. Their encouragement served as a strong affirmation of the team’s efforts and motivated the staff to continue striving for excellence.
11 February – Empowering Girls and Promoting Inclusion
The second day centered on the theme of empowering girls and helping them achieve their dreams. Staff engaged in meaningful discussions about the importance of education, encouragement, and creating safe and supportive environments for girls, particularly those facing social or economic challenges.
Participants shared real experiences from their work, highlighting how girls’ confidence grows when they are given opportunities to lead, speak, and participate actively in decision-making. The discussions emphasized the need to strengthen mentorship programs, life-skills training, and career guidance to help girls identify their talents and build confidence in their future possibilities.
The session also reinforced the importance of creating a culture of respect, equality, and inclusion within the school community. Staff explored ways to strengthen collaboration among teachers, support staff, and families to ensure that every girl feels valued and supported. By the end of the day, the team reaffirmed their commitment to empowering girls and fostering an environment where they can dream boldly and pursue their aspirations with confidence.
12 February – Team Building and Bonding
The final day of the meeting was dedicated to an outing and team-building activities. This day provided staff with the opportunity to relax, bond, and get to know one another better outside the formal work environment. Strengthening relationships among team members is an essential part of building a supportive and collaborative workplace. The outing helped foster trust, mutual understanding, and a stronger sense of unity within the team.
Key Outcomes of the Meeting
Throughout the three days, the staff achieved several important outcomes:
Recognized the value of collaboration and the importance of working together as a unified team. Shared and discussed best practices from their various roles and experiences. Established and clarified protocols and procedures to improve organizational efficiency. Identified priorities and developed a clearer vision for the way forward. The meeting strengthened communication and reinforced the shared commitment of the staff to the mission of DBCF.
Conclusion
The DBCF Annual Staff Meeting was a meaningful and productive gathering that combined reflection, strategic planning, and team building. The staff left the meeting with renewed motivation, clearer direction, and stronger relationships. The insights gained and decisions made during these three days will help guide DBCF’s work in the coming year as the team continues to serve young people with dedication, compassion, and hope.
