🌿 International Safe Abortion Day

Every woman has the right to access information and safe, legal, timely, and non-discriminatory abortion care. However, marginalized groups continue to face discrimination, stigma, social norms, and other barriers that prevent them from accessing accurate information and safe abortion services.

🌍 According to the World Health Organization (WHO, 2025), approximately 45% of abortions worldwide are unsafe. Unsafe abortion can result in physical and mental health complications and create social and financial burdens for women, families, communities, and health systems. It is also a preventable cause of maternal deaths and ill health.

With the support of RFSU ❤️‍🔥💜, GADC continues to work with diverse young people, communities, and groups facing barriers to promote access to information on human rights, sexual and reproductive rights, as well as safe and non-discriminatory sexual and reproductive health services.

We continue to empower people to have their voices heard and participate in advocacy for equal access to these essential health services.

🌱 NEW DISCUSSION PAPER: Cultivating Grassroots Feminist Empowerment 🌸💪
Advancing gender equality is often viewed through top-down policy frameworks, but what happens when civil society organizations actively partner with communities to transform entrenched social norms and unequal power relations from the ground up?

We are pleased to announce the release of UP CIDS Discussion Paper, "Cultivating Grassroots Feminist Empowerment: A Case Study of Gender and Development for Cambodia (GADC)". Authored by Eunice B. Santiago and published under our Program on Alternative Development (AltDev), this qualitative case study examines how GADC conceptualizes and operationalizes empowerment through an intersectional feminist lens in Rolea B'ear District, Kampong Chhnang Province.

🔍 Key Highlights from the Paper:
⚙️ Feminist Empowerment as a Process: Moving beyond fixed development outcomes to view empowerment as an ongoing journey of building critical consciousness, confidence, and collective agency.
🏝️ Grassroots Strategies in Action: Exploring how GADC utilizes feminist education, safe spaces like Gender Cafés, community organizing, and localized dialogues (such as the Cambodian Men Network) to engage both women and men.
🦀 Interconnected Dimensions of Power: Highlighting how participants enact "power from within," "power to," and "power with" to address pressing local challenges, ranging from gender-based violence support systems to inclusive community spaces.
💡 Bridging Local Realities to Advocacy: Actionable insights on how grassroots experiences directly inform broader policy monitoring, national mechanisms, and regional solidarity networks like MASSA.

By understanding how grassroots feminist initiatives challenge structural inequities, we can better support alternative development pathways that elevate the agency and leadership of women and marginalized communities.

❤️‍🔥[Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights for DYWA & MENACT]

🗨“I am happy that I can openly share about this topic here because the facilitators have created a sense of safety and trust. I have never felt brave enough to talk about it elsewhere, not even at home.”

This was the reflection shared by one participant during a sharing session on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) with the Diverse Young Women Change Agents for Gender-Based Violence (DYWA) and Diverse Young Men as Change Agents for Transformative Masculinity (MENACT).

Phnom Penh 📍 13 September 2026.
✨The session was facilitated by the Gender and Development for Cambodia ( ) team for 13 participants, including 10 women, as part of the project “Promoting Gender Justice Through Supporting Gender Café,” supported by Heinrich Böll Stiftung Cambodia.

The session aimed to help participants understand the fundamental principles of sexual and reproductive health and rights, as grounded in relevant legal and human rights frameworks. It also supported participants in distinguishing between common myths and misconceptions about SRHR and accurate, rights-based information. In particular, participants explored the concepts of consent and bodily autonomy, and how to understand and exercise these rights when making decisions related to their bodies and sexual and reproductive health in everyday life.

🗨“Previously, I had learned about human rights in general, but I never knew that sexual and reproductive health and rights are fundamental human rights. In particular, I had never had an in-depth discussion about consent,” another participant shared during the reflection session.

🗨“Before joining GADC, I did not feel comfortable talking about or buying sanitary pads. Now, my mindset has changed, and I feel much more comfortable talking about this topic. Because of my identity, I also did not feel confident speaking much about these issues before,” another participant shared.

The session also provided an opportunity for participants to explore where they can access accurate and reliable information and services related to sexual and reproductive health, helping them feel more confident in seeking information, making informed decisions, and exercising their rights.

==============

“In the past, my husband and I didn’t know how to make Effective Microorganisms (EM) liquid fertilizer ourselves, so we had to spend a lot of money buying it. Now, we’ve learned how to easily make it using raw materials available around our house. This knowledge will help reduce our expenses and can also provide an additional source of income for our family.”

📍 Prey Veng Province 📅 August 19–20, 2026
3rd Training Session: Climate-Resilient Poultry Raising and Agricultural Practices
Gender and Development for Cambodia (GADC), in collaboration with (Wellbeing Advancement) and with support from the Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia in Seoul, organized the 3rd training session on “Monitoring and Strengthening Poultry Raising, Mushroom Cultivation, and Other Crops.”

The program was conducted under the project “Women’s Economic Empowerment in Prey Veng – Business Skills and Gender Equality Transformation.” It brought together 19 married couples, 2 village facilitators, and technical teams to review progress, discuss challenges, and identify practical solutions together.

Key Highlights of the Training:
🐔 Climate-Resilient Poultry Raising: Vaccination, poultry health care, and disease prevention techniques using locally available resources.
🌿 EM Liquid Fertilizer Production: Learning how to use vegetables, plants, and other readily available household materials to produce EM liquid fertilizer for crops, livestock, and mushroom cultivation, helping reduce costs, improve soil quality, support crop growth, and contribute to environmental protection and waste management.
🍄 Hands-on Mushroom Cultivation: Step-by-step learning and practical exercises to build participants’ confidence in applying mushroom cultivation techniques at home.
📋 3-Month Action Planning: Supporting couples to develop clear plans for shared responsibilities and joint management of their family agricultural enterprises.

💬“Previously, my husband and I raised chickens using traditional methods, which generated little income and sometimes resulted in losses due to disease or death. Through this training, we gained a clearer understanding of disease prevention and healthy poultry care using affordable materials that we can find around our home.”
