We are pleased to share a glimpse of the "Together We Remember 2026" exhibition πŸ•ŠοΈ

This year, we organized the exhibition under the theme β€œConsent Denied: Reflecting on the Legacy of Forced Marriage and Sexual Violence” in commemoration of World Genocide Day. Through this exhibition, we aimed to highlight the painful and traumatizing stories of forced marriage and sexual violence during the Khmer Rouge regime , stories that should never be forgotten.

To make the exhibition more meaningful and reflective, we displayed panels from the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC), along with visual decorations inspired by the realities and missing parts of marriage and consent under the Khmer Rouge regime.

We would like to sincerely thank the American University of Phnom Penh and the faculty staff for their facilitation and continuous support throughout the exhibition. We are especially grateful to the ECCC of Cambodia for allowing us to utilize the panels for this meaningful exhibition.

Lastly, we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all professors, students, members of the public, and everyone who came to visit and engage with the exhibition. Your presence, reflections, and support truly mean a lot to us 🀍

An educational field trip to the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum will teach us important lessons about the genocide. We will learn how the Khmer Rouge turned a school into a place for detention and interrogation. The old classrooms, now prison rooms, and the photos of victims show the Khmer Rouge’s cruel acts.

Join us to visit this museum. It helps us remember history and think about what we can do to protect human rights and prevent tragedies in the future.

Join the AUPP Community for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS), as part of our Together We Remember 2026, where we explore how journalism can expose propaganda and protect truth in environments where information is tightly controlled during the Khmer Rouge Regime.

Through the lens of Meeting with Pol Pot inspired by Elizabeth Becker’s experiences traveling to Cambodia at Pol Pot’s invitation we’ll examine how an authoritarian regime may portray itself as revolutionary, peaceful, and morally justified, while concealing systematic brutality. The panel focus: Understanding the Role of Journalism in Exposing Truth and Propaganda in Khmer Rouge Regime. Against the language of liberation, the film shows how ideology can be converted into strategy: coercion, fear, and destruction are framed as β€œnecessary” for a promised future. Participants will discuss the distinct pressures journalists face under authoritarian rule, including:

- How propaganda narratives are constructed and repeated
- How journalists navigate fear, restrictions, and risk
- How evidence and witnesses are shaped, silenced, or erased
- How access and framing can either clarify reality or unintentionally reinforce falsehoods

Ultimately, we’ll ask: What does responsible journalism require when β€œtruth” is contested?
