Documentary: Debt Inc. — The International Money Behind Cambodia’s Microfinance Crisis
Published on 6 October 2026
-------------------------------------------
Cambodia has one of the world’s most heavily indebted microfinance sectors. Debt Inc. investigates the international money behind the industry — and asks who should be held accountable for the consequences.
Investigative journalist Claire Stam traces the financial chain from Cambodian borrowers to the international institutions and investors that helped finance the rapid expansion of the country’s microfinance sector.
With a loan portfolio equivalent to roughly 30% of Cambodia’s GDP, the sector has been linked to widespread over-indebtedness, coerced land sales and other human rights abuses. More than 167,000 Cambodian households have sold land to repay microloans, alongside documented cases of food insecurity, child labour and debt-related suicides.
Debt Inc. combines the experiences of affected Cambodian borrowers with interviews with representatives from FIAN Germany and OECD Watch, academics Dr. Frank Bliss and Dr. Milford Bateman, journalists Jack Brook and Gerhard Klas, and Oikocredit CEO Mirjam ’t Lam.
