Global Handwashing Day is about creating a culture of handwashing with soap. The challenge is to transform it from an abstract idea into an automatic behaviour in homes, schools, and communities across the nation. The first-ever Global Handwashing Day (GHD) took place on 15 October 2008 in countries all over the world. The campaign was initiated to reduce childhood mortality rates related to respi

ratory and diarrheal diseases by introducing simple behavioural change. Each year, over 200 million people are involved in celebrations in over 100 countries around the world. Global Handwashing Day is endorsed by a wide array of governments, international institutions, civil society organizations, NGOs, private companies, and individuals. This year, Cambodia marks Handwashing Day on 21 October, and activities will carry on for a month until 23 November.
