Every 5 October, we celebrate the educators who shape our future 💙

Teachers excel when they are supported to perform at their best, and this year's World Teachers' Day puts that support at the centre with the international theme, "Standing with teachers: 60 years of protecting the profession, advancing its status and shaping our futures."

As the lead UN agency for education, UNESCO has been a longstanding partner of MoEYS Cambodia in supporting teachers to grow throughout their careers. Through our Strengthening Teacher Education Programmes in Cambodia (STEPCam), financed by Global Partnership for Education , UNESCO collaborates with the MoEYS to raise the quality of initial teacher education and support teachers and teacher educators in upgrading their qualifications. Through the national Continuous Professional Development (CPD) system, teachers in Cambodia now have opportunities for professional learning that respond to their needs and interests. In the early grades, UNESCO has been supporting the MoEYS in transforming early grade learning through teacher training and mentoring.

🌍 Happy World Teachers’ Day 2026! 👩‍🏫👨‍🏫

On 5 October, UNESCO and MoEYS Cambodia joined over 1,300 educators, school directors and development partners to celebrate World Teachers' Day under the national theme, "Teachers are the pillars of modern pedagogy for building 21st-century human resources."

This year also marks 60 years since the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, which continues to serve as a vital reference for Cambodia’s teacher reform.

Through the Strengthening Teacher Education Programmes in Cambodia (STEPCam), financed by the Global Partnership for Education (GPE), UNESCO works closely with the Ministry to strengthen the teaching workforce, from quality pre-service teacher education to continuous professional development and career advancement, mentoring support for early grade teachers, and systematic approaches to ICT in education.

As Cambodia marks 75 years of UNESCO membership, we remain committed to supporting the Ministry in advancing its teacher reform. Let’s take this opportunity to thank all educators for their tireless efforts in nurturing the next generation!

A four-day in-person International Programme on Holocaust and Genocide Education (IPHGE) Policy Training on Education about Violent Pasts successfully concluded on 1 October 2026 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

The training was closed by Mr. Flavio Bonetti, Head of Office of UNESCO Phnom Penh, in the presence of H.E. Pen Monimakara, Secretary of State, Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, and Ms. Ilana Weinberg, representing the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

Through discussions, peer exchange and visits to the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, Choeung Ek Genocidal Center and the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC), education stakeholders from different countries deepened their understanding of Cambodia's violent past. They explored how memorial sites can serve as spaces for education and teacher training, through engagement with authentic historical sites connected to the crimes committed by the Khmer Rouge regime.

Mr. Bonetti thanked participants for their openness and constructive engagement throughout the training, particularly in reflecting on difficult pasts and engaging with Cambodia's memorial sites. He acknowledged that confronting such histories in person was not always easy and expressed his appreciation for the thoughtfulness and commitment participants brought to the discussions and exchanges.

UNESCO extends its appreciation to the Governments of the United States and Canada for their generous support of its continued partnership in advancing education about violent pasts.

With technical support from UNESCO, the Women’s Media Centre of Cambodia (WMC) and the Police Academy of Cambodia (PAC) held the first-ever Training of Trainers for police officers on media, press freedom, and the safety of women journalists from 23–25 September. The training equipped police officers with a stronger understanding of freedom of expression, the role of the media, and the importance of journalist safety, with particular attention to the challenges faced by women journalists. Participants also developed practical approaches to share their learning with colleagues across the police institution, helping to extend the impact of the training. The initiative brought together 22 police officers (10 women), marking an important step towards strengthening dialogue and understanding between law enforcement and the media.

Today, UNESCO Cambodia welcomed participants to the International Program on Holocaust and Genocide Education (IPHGE) Policy Training on Education about Violent Pasts, taking place in Phnom Penh from 28 September to 1 October 2026.

The training was opened by Flavio Bonetti, Head of Office of UNESCO Phnom Penh, in the presence of H.E. Dr. Hang Chuon Naron, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Education, Youth and Sport; Ms. Ilana Weinberg, representing the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum; and representatives from the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, alongside educators, policymakers and experts from across Asia-Pacific, Africa and Europe.

Building on years of collaboration with Cambodia, UNESCO is working with national partners to strengthen education about violent pasts through curriculum development, teacher training and learning connected to memorial sites. The IPHGE is implemented by UNESCO in partnership with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, with the support of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport and the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts.

The training provides an opportunity to reflect on how education can strengthen historical understanding, empathy, critical thinking and the values that support peace. Over the coming days, participants will visit Cambodia's memorial sites and the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC), exchange experiences and explore approaches to peace and Global Citizenship Education.

The right to know in the digital age

Access to information increasingly extends beyond public authorities to include private entities, digital platforms and AI systems that shape how people access and receive information.

People should be able to know when they are interacting with AI and clearly identify AI-generated content.

As Cambodia advances its digital transformation, transparency and access to reliable information remain important to building trusted information ecosystems.

As we mark and 260 years of the Right to Know, under the theme: “Upholding Information Integrity in the Digital Age: The Role of Access to Information in Addressing Information Disorder,” we recognise the importance of people’s access to reliable, trustworthy and accurate information.

Three years of World Heritage status for Koh Ker

On 17 September 2023, Koh Ker, once capital of the Khmer Empire under King Jayavarman IV, was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List — Cambodia's fourth cultural site after Angkor, Preah Vihear and Sambor Prei K*k.

Its stepped pyramid, Prasat Thom, remains one of the most striking expressions of 10th-century Khmer innovation.

Three years on, we celebrate this recognition, and the continued work of Cambodia's authorities and communities to protect it for generations to come.
