📰Cambodia, 1001fontaines Extend Partnership to Expand Clean Water Access and Hygiene Education in Schools

— Cambodia’s Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport and Teuk Saat 1001 (1001fontaines) have renewed their partnership for another five years to expand clean water access and strengthen hygiene education in schools, particularly in rural areas, officials said Monday.

Deputy Prime Minister and Education Minister Hang Chuon Naron met with Meas Depuis Anne Sarinn, chairwoman of the board of 1001fontaines, and her delegation to discuss ongoing cooperation.

During the meeting, the NGO expressed appreciation for the ministry’s support and reaffirmed its commitment to promoting health education through safe drinking water. The group has worked closely with the ministry to improve water supply and sanitation in schools, especially in underserved communities.

Following a presentation on achievements in 2025–2026 and plans for 2027–2028, Hang Chuon Naron congratulated 1001fontaines on its 21 years of operations in Cambodia and praised its contributions to student health and well-being.

He stressed the importance of clean water for consumption and hygiene, noting that improved access reduces healthcare costs for families and creates a better learning environment.

The Deputy Prime Minister voiced support for renewing the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which will continue to advance three areas of cooperation: the Water for Schools project, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) education, and support for Cambodia’s national action plan on water supply and sanitation.

The partnership has helped reduce student absenteeism and improve child welfare through clean drinking water and hygiene education in schools across multiple provinces.

អង្គការទឹកស្អាត ១០០១ មានមោទនភាពយ៉ាងក្រៃលែង ក្នុងការប្រកាសអំពីការចុះហត្ថលេខាលើអនុស្សរណៈនៃការយោគយល់គ្នា ជាមួយក្រសួងអប់រំ យុវជន និងកីឡា ដើម្បីដាក់បញ្ចូលកម្មវិធីទឹកពិសាសុវត្ថិភាពនៅក្នុងសាលារៀនជាផ្លូវការ។

💧 A Historic Milestone for Teuk Saat 1001 and Safe Drinking Water in Cambodian Schools

Teuk Saat 1001 is proud to announce the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport (MoEYS Cambodia), officially institutionalizing the Water in School (WinS) program.

This MoU marks a major milestone in the history of Teuk Saat 1001. It formally recognizes the organization’s role in providing safe drinking water to over 20% of rural primary school pupils.

The agreement also supports the integration of safe drinking water education into the national school curriculum, helping promote long-term behavior change and health awareness among Cambodian students.

This achievement is particularly meaningful for our teams, as the WinS program has been part of Teuk Saat 1001’s identity since 2008 and reflects the very foundation of our mission.

Today, Teuk Saat 1001 supports about 1,000 schools across 18 provinces, reaching around 350,000 children with access to safe drinking water.

We are honored to continue working alongside the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport to strengthen access to safe water and promote healthier futures for Cambodian children. 💙

This year’s World Environment Day reminds us that the planet is already sending clear signals. The question is: what will we send back?

At Teuk Saat 1001, we already witness the impacts of climate change on water availability and water quality across Cambodia. These changes directly affect the health of the hundreds of thousands of consumers we serve, while also threatening the livelihoods of our entrepreneurs.

Climate resilience is therefore a key priority for TS1001.

To better anticipate these challenges, we launched a climate risk assessment to better understand and map the impacts of climate change on water resources across the country. This work will help us strengthen mitigation measures and build a more climate-resilient safe water network.

At the same time, Teuk Saat 1001 contributes directly to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by limiting the need for water boiling. Through our decentralized local model and circular economy approach, we also reduce transportation-related emissions while supporting local communities.

Strengthening local resilience is essential. Communities are often the first to experience climate impacts and best understand their own risks and priorities. Supporting locally led adaptation helps protect livelihoods, water security, and community health over the long term.

💧 350 active water kiosks across Cambodia

The final kiosk of our 2025 construction wave has now been completed, bringing Teuk Saat 1001’s network to 350 active water kiosks as of March 2025.

This year, 20 new kiosks were built and opened across four provinces:
📍 Siem Reap
📍 Svay Rieng
📍 Kampong Thom
📍 Prey Veng

This expansion was made possible thanks to our partner 1001fontaines and the support of overseas donors.

Beyond construction, our operations teams continue to train and support entrepreneurs to help them build sustainable and financially stable businesses.

Together, we continue expanding access to safe drinking water for Cambodian communities. 💙

In just a few months, their network of local entrepreneurs delivered nearly 3.9 million liters of safe drinking water to 69,000 displaced people across six provinces - an extraordinary effort made possible by a deeply community-rooted model.

Teuk Saat 1001 is more than a partner to us. They are also a valued client, and ATS is honored to supply the control panels that power the water kiosks at the heart of this decentralized network, the same kiosks that proved so vital during the crisis.
