Equitable Cambodia is among the leading advocates of housing, land and natural resource rights in Cambodia. Through policy research, advocacy at the national and international level, coalition building, and community organizing and networking efforts, Equitable Cambodia has elevated the issue of forced evictions and land-grabbing in Cambodia and made the international community and the national au

thorities more responsive to this pervasive human rights problem. Equitable Cambodia has been engaged over the years in extensive efforts to support human rights defenders and expand access to justice. It has developed ground-breaking popular education curriculum on international human rights law, domestic law, and strategies that communities can employ to defend their rights in the face of forced displacement. We have trained more than 100 grassroots facilitators from fifteen Cambodian provinces and municipalities who are now actively using these materials to raise awareness and support threatened communities across the country. We have pioneered the use of human rights impacts assessments as an advocacy tool in Cambodia and has successfully assisted communities to access the accountability mechanisms of international financial institutions and lodge extra-territorial human rights complaints against trans-national companies and international development agencies in their home jurisdictions. These efforts have not only been successful in securing remedies for affected communities but also influencing important policy changes at multi-lateral and bi-lateral development institutions.

A direct training on “Non-Violent Communication and Leadership” was successfully held from 25–26 July 2026 in Kandal Province with 21 participants, including 8 women, 3 LGBTIQ+ participants, and 1 person with a disability. Participants included 1 Tompoun Indigenous person, 3 Kajork Indigenous people, 2 Kreng Indigenous people, 1 Pnorng Indigenous person, 3 Kouy Indigenous people, and Khmer community members.
💬 Participants’ reflections:
- Pnorng Indigenous Youth: I gained a great deal from this training, including the opportunity to meet new people and learn more about facilitation. The facilitator’s approach was effective and flexible, and the sessions kept me fully engaged. Feminism was a new concept for me, but after the training, I understood its meaning. The lessons combined theory and practice, and I understood about 80% of the content.
- 2025 Grassroot Trainer: “I was first impressed by the training topics of leadership and nonviolent communication, including the discussion on feminism, conflict, and different types of conflict. I am very pleased with what I learned, as the training exceeded my expectations. I now have a much clearer understanding of conflict types and greatly appreciated the facilitator’s organized guidance throughout the sessions. I especially enjoyed the practical activities and the many opportunities for group practice”.
- 2026 Grassroot Trainer, Kuy Indigenous participant: “I am very grateful that Equitable Cambodia organized this training. It was a unique course, as I previously did not understand what leadership meant or how it could be practiced. After participating, I now have a clear understanding. When I return home, I will do my best to apply what I learned in my community. We will work together to use the knowledge and lessons shared by the trainers for the benefit of our community and to help future generations gain greater knowledge and understanding”.

Equitable Cambodia (EC) organized a Training of Trainers workshop on “Debtor Rights and Negotiation Skills” from 22–24 July 2026 in Battambang Province. The training brought together 25 participants, including 17 women, from Siem Reap, Ratanakiri, Preah Vihear, and Oddar Meanchey provinces. Participants included 3 Kouy Indigenous People, 6 Kreung Indigenous People, 2 Kachok Indigenous People, and Khmer community members.
💬 Participants’ reflection: “I am very grateful for the opportunity to join this training on a new topic I had not learned about before. Debt is a common challenge in my community, and I now have a clearer understanding of debtors’ rights, legal debt resolution, and negotiation. 💬 ការឆ្លុះបញ្ចាំងពីអ្នកសម្របសម្រួល៖ ខ្ញុំរីករាយដែលឃើញយុវជនមកចូលរួមច្រើន សម្រាប់ខ្ញុំបើទោះបីជាអ្នកសម្របសម្រួលសហគមន៍ក៏ដោយ ក៏កន្លែងខ្លះខ្ញុំត្រូវការពង្រឹងសមត្ថភាពបន្ថែមដែរ តួយ៉ាង ពេលដែលបើកវគ្គចែករំលែកនេះ ខ្ញុំបានរៀនសូត្របានច្រើនបន្ថែមទៀតលើការពិនិត្យ និងផ្ទៀងផ្ទាត់វិក័យបត្រ និងភាពបត់បែនក្នុងនាមជាអ្នកសម្របសម្រួលម្នាក់។

On July 17, 2026, three youth partners conducted an echo training on “Introduction to Law, Human Rights, and Democracy” in Ratanakiri. The training brought together 33 participants, including 25 women. Of these, 31 were Indigenous Jaray participants and 2 were Khmer. To ensure everyone could fully understand the content and discussions, the facilitators used both Jaray and Khmer throughout the training.
💬 Participant Reflection: “This training was very useful because it introduced me to new knowledge I had not learned before. The lessons are especially valuable for my Indigenous community and helped me better understand my rights as an Indigenous youth.”
💬 Facilitator Reflection: “I was pleased to see many youth take part in this training. Although I am already a community facilitator, I still have areas where I can strengthen my skills. Facilitating this learning session helped me gain a better understanding of how to review receipts and expenditures, while also improving my flexibility in carrying out my role as a facilitator.”

A CAO investigation found that IFC violated its own Sustainability Framework’s requirements in its investments in six banks providing microfinance in Cambodia, and this noncompliance contributed to predatory lending practices that have led to the loss of land and livelihoods, hunger, increased su***de risks, and threats of retaliation against the very communities that are supposed to benefit from microfinance programs.
