Fauna & Flora works through partnerships that ensure local ownership and lasting results. Today Fauna & Flora is active

in over 40 countries and has its headquarters in Cambridge, UK. Fauna & Flora has been present in Cambodia since 1996 and was among one of the first NGOs to work in the country. We currently work in partnership with the Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry & Fisheries, and Ministry of Youth, Education & Sport. The priorities of our work in Cambodia are to secure and improve the management of areas important to the countries’ biodiversity, to help build national capacity, by providing Cambodian nationals with the necessary skills, experience and materials to conserve their unique natural heritage, and to preserve some of the regions most threatened species. Fauna & flora currently implements several conservation projects in Cambodia, including:

Cambodian Crocodile Conservation Project: The Critically Endangered Siamese crocodile is now extinct from 99% of its former range, following decades of hunting and habitat loss. Fewer than 250 adults remain in the wild and the majority of these are found in Cambodia. Fauna & flora, in partnership with the government and local communities, is working to protect the remaining wild populations and their habitat. Current activities include developing crocodile sanctuaries protected by local community wardens, advocacy for stricter controls over crocodile farming and trade, as well as research and monitoring. The Cardamom Mountains Wildlife Sanctuaries Project: Phnom Samkos and Phnom Aural Wildlife Sanctuaries are part of the Cardamom Mountains landscape of southwestern Cambodia, the largest and most pristine area of intact forest in mainland Southeast Asia. The project is aimed at ensuring the long-term conservation of these wildlife sanctuaries and their biodiversity, in ways that are compatible with poverty reduction and essential national development. Cambodian Elephant Conservation Group: Cambodia has one of the largest populations of wild Asia elephants in the region. The project aims to prevent the two major threats to these charismatic mammals: degradation and fragmentation of their habitat, leading to human elephant conflict, and elephant poaching and capture. Management of wild elephants requires a careful balancing act of maintaining natural forest habitats, whilst preventing negative interactions between elephants and rural people. Fauna & flora has been assisting the Government of Cambodia to conserve elephants since 2001, focusing on sites across the country where they are under serious threat but, with appropriate management, have a healthy chance of survival. Coastal & Marine Conservation Progrmme (CMCP): Established since 2010, the programme has been served to build the knowledge base on coastal and marine biodiversity, support small-scale fisheries, and develop a national Marine Protected Area (MPA) network. Our works spans across the entire coastline; from the northern Koh Kong coastal complex and the Koh Sdach Archipelago, the Koh Rong Archipelago, Kampot, and Kep. Our vision: Cambodia has healthy marine and coastal ecosystems which are resilient to anthropogenic change. The CMCP leads in Coastal and marine biodiversity research; Implements evidence-based biodiversity conservation interventions; Tracks and halts illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing; Build local capacity and awareness; Provides livelihood support to coastal community.

On 25 April 2026, Fauna & Flora, in partnership with the General Department of Fisheries under the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF), Koh Kong Provincial Administration, and local authorities, officially launched the anti-trawling block deployment ceremony within Koh Sdach Archipelago.

The ceremony was presided over by H.E. Im Rachna, Undersecretary of State of MAFF;Mr. Kit Sopha, Deputy Governor of Koh Kong Province, Dr Horm Chandet, Country Director of Fauna & Flora; along with representatives from the General Department of Fisheries, local authorities, and Fauna & Flora.
The deployment of anti-trawling blocks in Koh Sdach Archipelago represents a significant milestone in Cambodia’s efforts to protect marine biodiversity and sustainable fisheries practices. These structures are designed to prevent access by destructive trawler vessels, therefore reducing the impact of illegal and destructive fishing practices. Through this initiative, we hope to safeguard wild fish populations, preserve sensitive marine habitats vital to the ecosystems, and support the local fishing community’s livelihood. In addition to preventing illegal and destructive fishing activities, the blocks serve as artificial reefs, supporting the growth of diverse marine organisms, which we hope will further enhance the health of marine ecosystems.

Extensive consultations with local communities and relevant authorities conducted in late 2024 and early 2025 ensured that deployment locations were carefully selected and supported by local communities. An assessment of benthic habitats was also carried out prior to deployment to minimize ecological impacts and ensure the effective protection of the marine environment.

Fauna & Flora - Cambodia Programme , with the support and collaboration of Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, and with the Fisheries Administration as the lead, has launched a women-led community initiative called “រលកស្រ្តី - SHE Waves Koh Sdach".

This program focuses on upcycling end-of-life fishing nets into marketable products, providing additional income opportunities for local communities while reducing the likelihood of these materials becoming ghost fishing gear.

Abandoned fishing nets are among the most harmful types of marine debris, posing serious threats to marine biodiversity and coastal communities. When fishing nets are abandoned in the ocean, they can trap marine life, causing mortality and leading to a decline in fish stocks. For communities like Koh Sdach, where fishing is a primary source of livelihood, this can negatively impact both income and food security.

The activity is funded by Blue Action Fund.

On 30 March, Fauna & Flora in collaboration with Ministry of Environment and Koh Kong Provincial Administration organized a stakeholder consultation and review meeting on the establishment of a protected habitat and genetic conservation area for the Siamese Crocodile at Kampong Ta Chhay–Trapeang Peang. The meeting was held at the Koh Kong Provincial Department of Environment under the chairmanship of H.E. Thay Chantha, Deputy Director-General of the General Department of Natural Protected Areas of the Ministry of Environment; Mr. An Sothearith, Deputy Koh Kong Provincial Governor, Mr. Lou Vanny of Fauna & Flora in Cambodia; with participation from the director of the Southern Tonle Sap Terrestrial Protected Areas Conservation Department, director of Koh Kong Provincial Department of Environment, representatives from Sre Ambel District Administration, relevant commune and village authorities, conservation partner organizations, and local Siamese crocodile community wardens, totaling 26 participants.

The meeting provided an opportunity for technical experts from Ministry of Environment and Fauna & Flora to present the background of Siamese crocodile conservation efforts in the Cardamom Mountains National Park, as well as key challenges and proposed solutions, including the establishment of a specific protected area for the Critically Endangered species.

The meeting held in-depth discussions on the proposed site for establishing the Siamese crocodile genetic conservation area at Kampong Ta Chhay–Trapeang Peang, located within the Cardamom Mountains National Park in D**g Peang Commune, Sre Ambel District, Koh Kong Province. This site is considered highly suitable as a natural habitat for Siamese crocodiles, as well as a location for nesting and releasing purebred individuals to enhance the wild population.

The provincial and district administrations, local communities, and meeting participants expressed strong support for the establishment of this protected habitat and genetic conservation area for Siamese Crocodile. This initiative aims to protect and conserve this globally threatened species from the brink of extinction in the wild and aligns with Cambodia’s Circular Strategy on Environment and its global commitments to biodiversity conservation.

Participants also recommended conducting further detailed ground verification to ensure clarity and avoid any potential overlap with existing land-use plans in the area. The project is financially supported by Arcadia and Chester Zoo.

On 24 March 2026, Fauna & Flora, in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and the Battambang Provincial Administration, organized a launch workshop on the “Karst Conservation Project,” along with the official declaration of a working group for the research, designation, and establishment of Phnom Banan and Phnom Sampov as Natural Heritage Sites in Battambang Province.

The workshop was presided over by H.E. Seng Soth, Deputy Director General of the General Department of Local Communities at the Ministry of Environment; Mr. Sreng Hong, Deputy Governor of Battambang Province; and Mr. Horm Chandet, Country Director of Fauna & Flora in Cambodia, and was attended by 40 participants, including representatives from relevant departments of Ministry of Environment, provincial departments, local authorities, communities, monks, and partner organizations.

The purpose of the workshop was to inform stakeholders about the objectives, activities, and expected outcomes of the karst conservation project, which contributes to the implementation of the Circular Strategy on Environment. It also introduced the roles and responsibilities of the research working group tasked with establishing the natural heritage sites at Phnom Banan and Phnom Sampov.It also provided an opportunity for Fauna & Flora to present findings from biodiversity research in the karst areas, which identified 11 species new to science. This highlights the significant biodiversity value of these karst landscapes, in addition to their cultural and religious importance, and their contribution to national pride for Cambodia.

In addition, we held active discussions and gathered valuable inputs and key data to support the development of plans for establishing these two karst areas as natural heritage sites, as well as the follow-up action plans needed to achieve the expected outcomes.

On 25 March 2026, Mr. Koy Maquis, Marine Protected Area Manager, and Ms. Hem Manita, Communications Officer, representing Fauna & Flora, were delighted to participate in the Mekong Discovery Day at the 15th Cambodia International Film Festival (CIFF).

During the event, we had the opportunity to share our key conservation work through short documentary films we produced, particularly highlighting the protection of marine natural resources in the Koh Sdach Archipelago.

In addition, we took part in a panel discussion on the theme “Safeguarding Our Marine Future,” where we shared insights on key marine conservation initiatives in Cambodia, including marine biodiversity research, understanding marine fisheries management areas, and the use of storytelling to promote conservation efforts.

We hope this discussion will help raise public awareness of environmental issues in Cambodia, enhance understanding of the value of our natural resources, and encourage active participation in protecting them.

A new biodiversity survey, published today, has revealed the vast array of new and endangered species living within Cambodia’s karst ecosystems.

Some of the most significant findings of the survey, which was led by Fauna & Flora-Cambodia Programme in collaboration with Cambodia’s Ministry of Environment and field experts, include the discovery of many species that are new to science: three new geckos , two micro-, two millipede which all these 7 new species have been published, while other new 3 geckos (Gehyra sp. nov., Cyrtodactylus sp. nov. and Dixonius sp. nov.) and a new pit viper species (Trimeresurus sp. nov.) are currently being described.The survey confirmed the presence of several threatened species, including the Sunda pangolin, Indochinese silvered langur, long-tailed macaque and green peafowl, highlighting the urgent need to protect this habitat.

Karst is one of the most biodiverse habitats on Earth, with high levels of endemism. These landscapes are also culturally and spiritually important to local communities and are increasingly valued for ecotourism.

Joint Press Release- The discovery of a coral spawning event for the third time in the Koh Rong Archipelago and for the first time in the Koh Sdach Archipelago.

Fauna & Flora - Cambodia Programme , in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Ministry of Environment, Marine Resource Protection Organisation, and Song Saa Foundation, is pleased to announce the discovery of a coral spawning event for the third time in the Koh Rong Archipelago and for the first time in the Koh Sdach Archipelago.

The survey was conducted from 7–9 March 2026, during which the survey team carried out night dives and reef monitoring to document coral spawning activities, assess coral health, and record environmental conditions. The findings provide valuable data to better understand coral reproduction and support long-term coral reef conservation.

Healthy coral reefs are essential for marine biodiversity, fisheries sustainability, and the livelihoods of coastal communities. The team will continue monitoring coral spawning events to strengthen conservation efforts and protect Cambodia’s marine ecosystems.

Happy International Women’s Day!

We are proud to spotlight a women-led initiative in the Koh Sdach community, SHE Waves, where women are transforming discarded fishing nets into beautiful, marketable products. So far, they have collected 577 kg of fishing nets and ropes and upcycled them into valuable products.

This effort not only helps reduce ocean pollution caused by fishing gear waste, which harms marine resources, but also generates income for the community.

With support from Fauna & Flora and our partner Remade, SHE Waves has received training in essential skills such as sewing, design, marketing, and entrepreneurship. To date, they produce over 15 types of products, including bags, bracelets, necklaces, earrings, and more.
