ASEAN UK Young Leaders Initiative

From 9 to 10 March 2026, Mr Vanndasambath Chhuon, General Coordinator of the ASEAN-UK Young Leaders Initiative, was selected to participate in the ASEAN Future Forum NextGen Workshop 2026 under the theme “Strategic Skills for Regional Leadership," held in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The workshop was organised by the UK Mission to ASEAN and the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam (DAV). Notably, this year ASEAN and the UK celebrate their fifth anniversary. ASEAN-UK YLI is proud to contribute to the impact, as we also mark five years for this youth-led project.

During the workshop, youths from ASEAN and the UK collaborated to draft the ASEAN Future Forum Youth Vision Statement 2030, which will be presented at the ASEAN Future Forum in Hanoi, Vietnam, in the upcoming month. They also participated in a youth skills-training workshop and attended sessions on ASEAN Centrality and ASEAN Vision 2045.

ASEANUK-YLI, in partnership with Plan International Cambodia, is excited to share an episode featuring Ms Yieng Manich, a participant in the Cambodian Girl-Takeover program, as the British Ambassador for a Day.

In this episode, Manich shares her experiences serving as the Girl Takeover for the British Ambassador to Cambodia, part of the collaboration between Plan International Cambodia and the British Embassy in 2025. ASEAN-UK YLI proudly hosts this annual conversation with a young girl demonstrating leadership in her community. Manich discusses her involvement in diplomatic discussions, from official meetings with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation to engagements with private companies, women, and youth leaders during her day as the Ambassador.

She also shares her key takeaways and personal perspective on social stigma, its development, and the importance of a supportive environment that encourages young girls to pursue their dreams.

ASEAN-UK Young Leaders Initiative is proud to collaborate with the BritCham Cambodia to produce the flagship publication "BritCham Cambodia: The Story of a Chamber" to celebrate 30 years of enterprise, community, and partnership between Cambodia and the United Kingdom, in which our General Coordinator served as the Editor.

We would like to thank all ambassadors, founders, former executive directors, and Board of Directors members of BritCham Cambodia who contributed to this book. We also thank the supportive team from BritCham Cambodia, Mr Martin Darby, Executive Director of BritCham Cambodia, Mr Tom Starkey, Ms Chhivleng, Ms Chhengleab, Mr Setha, and many others.

This book covers a wide history of BritCham Cambodia that is worth recording for these three decades of promoting business and trade between the two kingdoms. Everyone is part of this amazing journey.

On October 15, 2025, the ASEAN-UK Young Leaders Initiative team met with Deputy Head of Mission, Ms Abigail Fryer, at the British Embassy in Cambodia. During this meeting, we discussed the progress of the ASEAN-UK YLI in its efforts to connect, promote, and advance the partnership between ASEAN and the UK, as well as to strengthen the relations between Cambodia and the UK.

We are also providing updates on our ongoing activities for this year, including our partnership with BritCham Cambodia and the upcoming plan to celebrate the 5th anniversary of the ASEAN-UK Dialogue Partnership.

To mark the milestone of the Platinum Jubilee between Laos and the UK, on October 10, 2025, the ASEAN-UK Young Leaders Initiative hosted an online special sharing session on “Laos-UK Relationship at 70: Retrospective and Progress,” with Mr Thavone Singharaj, Deputy Head of Mission at the Laos Embassy in London.

During the sharing session, Deputy Head of Mission, Mr Singharaj, began by recognising the 70th anniversary, noting that official relations were established in September 1955 and formalised after the UK played a key mediating role at the Geneva Meetings. To this day, the relationship between Laos and the UK remains at its strongest point, characterised by continued high-level engagement, including the recent Fourth Political Dialogue.

On October 8, 2025, as part of the Girl Takes Over program with Ambassador Manich served as the British Ambassador for a Day. ASEAN-UK Young Leaders Initiative attended a Girl Takes Over Networking Reception, where we met many advocates and gender empowerment groups. Ambassador Manich's speech was very inspiring and motivating, encouraging young girls and women to dare to dream.
