🎉Over the past 10 years of bird nest protection in Keo Seima Wildlife Sanctuary, the conservation team has discovered and protected 17 Giant Ibis nests, resulting in the successful hatching of 18 Giant Ibis chicks.
🦤The Giant Ibis (Thaumatibis gigantea), also known locally as Ou Leuk, is the national bird of the Kingdom of Cambodia and one of the rarest bird species in the world. It inhabits dry deciduous forests, seasonal wetlands within these forests, and other wetland habitats. Its diet mainly consists of insects, eels, snakes, crabs, frogs, snails, and other small animals.
🏞️Keo Seima Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the Giant Ibis's most important remaining strongholds in Cambodia. The species is carefully protected through the Wildlife Nest Protection Program implemented by WCS, with financial support from the Keo Seima REDD+ Project. Over the past 10 years, the Wildlife Nest Protection Program in Keo Seima Wildlife Sanctuary has achieved encouraging conservation results. A total of 17 Giant Ibis nests have been discovered, and 18 Giant Ibis chicks have successfully hatched and fledged. More recently, three additional nests have been found, providing further evidence that Giant Ibis conservation efforts in Keo Seima Wildlife Sanctuary are making positive progress. Despite these achievements, the species continues to face several significant threats. These include habitat loss and degradation, disturbance of nesting sites, poisoning, illegal hunting, and the improper use of agricultural chemicals, all of which negatively affect the ecosystems on which the Giant Ibis depends. Together, these threats continue to place the Giant Ibis among the world's Critically Endangered species.
♻️The Giant Ibis plays a vital role in maintaining the balance and health of wetland and forest ecosystems by helping regulate populations of insects and other small animals. It also serves as an important indicator of the health and integrity of its natural habitat. Conserving this iconic bird in Cambodia is of immense importance, not only for protecting the species itself but also for safeguarding the ecosystems on which countless other species depend.
🤝Join us in protecting Cambodia's wildlife. Stop forest clearing, end the illegal trade of all wildlife species, never use poison to kill wildlife, and don’t consume wild meat or keep wildlife as pets.
