Friends of Koh Rong

Friends of Koh Rong Helping to build strong communities on the Cambodian islands through education and sustainable community development.

Established in 2013, Friends of Koh Rong exists to help the local communities on the Koh Rong archipelago adapt to the tourism industry that is changing their way of life forever. Located two hours off the coast of mainland Cambodia, Koh Rong and its neighbouring islands were for many years considered to be a hidden gem. Now firmly part of the backpacker trail around South-East Asia, Koh Rong is u

ndergoing major development. We seek to help our beneficiaries to adapt and benefit from these changes through education, outreach and sustainable community development. Friends of Koh Rong envisions a stronger and more sustainable community for all. To see some of our work in action, have a look through our photos, or check out our website.

Today FoKR turns 9 years old (brabuon chhnam)! πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰
It has been an incredible journey providing education on Koh Rong, with the help of countless leaders, donors, and volunteers from around the world. A huge thank you to every single one of you (on island and abroad) for getting the organization to this point today. πŸŒŽπŸ™β€οΈ

Although our involvement in the community has shifted from on island classes to secondary education on the mainland, we are proud to share the below videos/photos of our student Para, who is now finishing high school in Phnom Penh and training to be an English teacher!

A huge thank you to long time FoKR staff Bun Te and Reaksmey Khun for the many trips to PP, the community outreach and nonstop communication between kids, parents, elders, teachers and FoKR Founders abroad.

Together we have been able to help Para’a dreams come true. AKOON TOM TOM AWKANEER!!! πŸ’ͺ

Thank you for your patience as we gathered news from our wonderful FoKR volunteers and students on the island about the current COVID-19 situation.

Our emergency food packages were crucial during such a challenging time and we thank each of you who contributed to making it happen; through donations, assistance in ordering and collecting food and the many hands who packed and distributed!

With lockdown lifting, Koh Tui community can once again receive supplies of healthy and nutritious food from the supply boats and income from small amounts of tourism that has resumed.

We have our fingers crossed that life can continue as normal for the community as the COVID -19 pandemic continues globally.

We have some resources to provide additional food drops, should they be required over the coming months and we will keep you in the loop should this happen.

In other news, we are looking forward to seeing our amazing scholarship students return back on campus in Phnom Penh, when schools reopen in the coming weeks.

We will keep you in the loop as things inevitably change and evolve. Feel free to get in touch via our website or send us a message if you have any questions.

Thank you all for your continued support!
With love x FoKR

Friends of Koh Rong is 8 YEARS OLD TODAY!
What an unbelievable, wild and exciting journey this has been.

Way back in 2013 we started teaching ABCs on the Community Pier and organizing beach cleans ending with a swim and upcycled art class. From there we moved into school refurbishments, health and hygiene workshops, and offered multiple free classes a day to a generation of Koh Tui locals. More recently, our efforts have been focused on supporting students travelling to Phnom Penh to continue their studies, and in providing COVID relief packages in Koh Tui village. FoKR has had the privilege of supporting so many people on Koh Rong, with the help of so many people both on and off island.

In the past two weeks, we have received a flood of emails and incredibly generous donations for our most recent COVID-19 emergency relief packages. We are very grateful to the global FoKR family for reaching out; it has been heartwarming to see the continued support and love people have for FoKR and the Koh Rong communities. We are in communication with on island volunteers and community members to see what the needs currently are and whether more packages are required. We will update you as soon as we have more news.

Check out all these smiling faces throughout the past 8 years. It is you who has helped to make FoKR so incredibly magical!

14/08/2021

Over the past week, FoKR volunteer Leang Mengly has led a group of beautiful helpers to order, organise, sort and deliver COVID emergency relief packages to 70 families in Koh Tui. Each contained:
πŸ†πŸ₯¬πŸ§…πŸ₯•πŸ³πŸ₯©πŸŒΆπŸ§„
carrots, cabbage, onions, eggplant and green peppers.
Eggs
Meat
Soy sauce, fish sauce and cooking spices
Sanitary items

These packages will supplement the recent rice and sauce stipend that was provided by the local government with healthy and nutritious produce to ensure the health and wellbeing of families during this time. Photos of meals being shared by families accompanied by big smiles have been coming through, along with notes of thanks.

With the situation evolving on the island, the need for further relief soon is likely. What this looks like will be determined by volunteers on the ground in accordance with local needs, and more details will follow, but if you’re interested in making a donation now, please head to https://www.friendsofkohrong.org/donate

FoKR family – hello! 😊 Here's a long overdue update!
Firstly, we apologise for the silence. Like everyone across the globe, the FoKR team has been trying to wade through the uncertainty and upheaval and updating social media fell by the wayside.

When schools across Cambodia closed in March 2020, students from Koh Rong involved in our SeaFAIRers Scholarship program returned from studying on the mainland. Since then, school openings have been sporadic and the SeaFAIRers are studying online.

With the tourism industry on pause, for many families, times have been tough. The remote nature of the island largely kept COVID itself at bay until recently. Koh Tiu village has been forced into a strict lockdown, with fishing banned (the main source of local sustenance) and illness spreading through crowded housing.

Funds remaining from our SeaFAIRers program are being used to support local families with their basic needs. The FoKR team and local leaders were in agreement that ensuring the health and wellbeing of locals on the island was the best way to support the community today. In the past, most of our work was focused on sustainable development and education; but times have changed and so must we.

Stay tuned for more information on what that currently looks like on the ground, and how you can get involved moving forward.

We miss you all FoKR fam! Here's a reminder that no matter where you are in the world, the stunning sunsets of Koh Rong still happen and there is beauty to be found in each day.

Love, FoKR Founders
