The PCRL Project conducted 𝗙𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗙𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀 (𝗙𝗙𝗦) training sessions in Battambang and Siem Reap provinces to strengthen farmers’ knowledge and practical skills in cassava production. In Siem Reap, the training also focused on land preparation techniques for cashew cultivation, helping farmers establish a strong foundation for productive and sustainable cashew farming.

Through hands-on learning and field-based demonstrations, participating farmers gained practical knowledge on seed selection, land preparation, soil fertility management, efficient use of agricultural inputs, and sustainable cultivation techniques aimed at improving yields, reducing production costs, and enhancing long-term productivity.

These activities are part of PCRL’s efforts to promote livelihood diversification, create greater economic opportunities for rural households, and strengthen community resilience to climate change. By supporting farmers with improved agricultural knowledge and fostering sustainable land-use practices, the project contributes to increased household income while encouraging the conservation and sustainable management of natural resources for future generations.

PCRL is a five-year joint initiative by FAO Cambodia, General Directorate of Agronomy (GDA) of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, and General Directorate of Local Community (GDLC) of the Ministry of Environment, funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF).

Fifty years ago, amid a global food crisis and growing demand for rapid agricultural assistance, FAO established the 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲 (𝗧𝗖𝗣) with a clear purpose: to provide countries with timely access to practical technical expertise when it is needed most.

Five decades later, that commitment continues to deliver meaningful results.

Since 2018 alone, approximately 𝗨𝗦𝗗 𝟰𝟴𝟬 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 invested through the TCP has helped mobilize nearly 𝗨𝗦𝗗 𝟵.𝟱 𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 in additional resources worldwide—demonstrating how targeted technical cooperation can catalyze transformative change far beyond the initial investment.

Over the years, the TCP has supported countries in addressing some of the most pressing challenges facing agrifood systems, including droughts, floods, pest and disease outbreaks, natural disasters, and the sustainable management of fisheries and natural resources. It has also strengthened institutions, enhanced technical capacities, and improved rural livelihoods across the globe.

Today, 𝟭𝟰 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁 of FAO's core budget is dedicated to the TCP, reflecting a strong and enduring commitment to providing responsive, practical, and trusted support to Members.

As we commemorate the 𝟱𝟬𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝗿𝘆 of the Technical Cooperation Programme, we celebrate not only a legacy of partnership and impact, but also a continued commitment to helping countries build more resilient, sustainable, and inclusive agrifood systems for the future.

In 2024, global fisheries and aquaculture produced a record 𝟮𝟯𝟱 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝘀 of aquatic animals and algae. Even more remarkably,𝟲𝟬% of global aquatic food production now comes from aquaculture, making it one of the fastest-growing food sectors in the world.

Behind these numbers are people. Around 𝟲𝟬𝟬 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 people depend on fisheries and aquaculture value chains for their livelihoods, while aquatic animal products generated 𝗨𝗦𝗗 𝟭𝟴𝟰 𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 in global trade in 2024 alone.

There is encouraging progress: 𝟲𝟮% of assessed marine fishery stocks are being fished sustainably, and these stocks account for 𝟳𝟯% of global landings. At the same time, aquaculture is becoming increasingly important for food security, already providing 𝟱𝟵% of aquatic animal food availability, a share expected to rise to 𝟲𝟮% by 2050.

As the world looks for sustainable ways to feed a growing population, fisheries and aquaculture are proving that healthy waters are not only an environmental priority, but they are essential for livelihoods, nutrition, and our shared future.

A delegation from FAO Cambodia, led by 𝗥𝗲𝗯𝗲𝗸𝗮𝗵 𝗕𝗲𝗹𝗹, FAO Representative in Cambodia, together with media representatives, recently visited oyster reef restoration and research sites in Kampot Province to learn about ongoing efforts to restore marine habitats and strengthen the resilience of coastal communities.

The visit focused on oyster reef restoration research being implemented by 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗮 (𝗠𝗖𝗖) in collaboration with the Department of Fisheries Conservation of the General DIrectorate of Fisheries (GDF). 𝑶𝒚𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝒓𝒆𝒆𝒇𝒔 play a vital role in improving water quality, supporting marine biodiversity, providing habitat for fish and other aquatic species, and contributing to healthier and more productive coastal ecosystems.

The activity forms part of the broader Climate Adaptation and Resilience in Cambodia’s Coastal Fishery-Dependent Communities (CamAdapt) Project, which supports the protection, restoration, and monitoring of key coastal ecosystems, including mangroves, seagrass beds, coral reefs, oyster reefs, and blue swimming crab habitats.

Implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) and the Ministry of Environment (MoE), with technical support from Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and funding from the Environment Facility (GEF), the project is helping communities adapt to climate change while protecting critical coastal ecosystems.

To date, 𝗖𝗮𝗺𝗔𝗱𝗮𝗽𝘁 has supported the integration of climate change adaptation and disaster risk management measures into 36 Community Fisheries Area Management Plans across Cambodia’s coastal provinces. The project has also contributed to mangrove restoration efforts, including the restoration of 10.53 hectares at the Koh Kapik Ramsar Site in Koh Kong Province, while supporting wider ecosystem conservation and community-led management initiatives.

CamAdapt aims to improve climate resilience for approximately 𝟭𝟬𝟬,𝟬𝟬𝟬 people while supporting the protection of around 𝟴𝟮,𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝗵𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗲𝘀 of coastal ecosystems across Cambodia’s coastal provinces.
