Grade 6 Graduation 2025
On Wednesday morning, September 3, the community at LaValla had its major event for the year: a very formal Graduation Ceremony for the 22 Grade 6 students. After a national flag raising ceremony, there was a formal procession of the Grade 6 students who, two at a time, were announced and then they received a Krama from Teacher Samart and Teacher Ly. Framed certificates were also presented to each student.
The programme included three speeches to the graduates. The LaValla school Principal, Um Sreynan spoke, then the Executive Director of Marist Solidarity Cambodia, Dr Sothun Nop and, Br Allen. The responses of gratitude were given by two Grade 6 reps: in fluent Khmer and in flawless English.
The creative programme, which involved all 84 children, ran for 2 hours. The school band accompanied several singing groups. There was a Buddhist prayer song with a chant “May the gods protect the land, the forest, the Khmer temple….”. A Boat Song with 6 rowers in a large paper machine craft was one of the Grade 6 acts. Guests were struck by the truism of the song’s line for LaValla School…”it is through the kindness of you all that we have studied and built a new destiny”.
The school band featured two student keyboard players, several guitarists and drummers. A new wonderful soloist emerged in Thanet, from Grade 5, who to date was recognised for his playing by ear a keyboard, guitar, drums and a traditional instrument akin to an Indian sitar.
There is always a surprise act from Teacher Im of Grade 2. This time six of our impish, vigorous sporty boys aged 11 to 12 formed a Middle Eastern dance ensemble. Fitted out in tutus, white tights, wigs, makeup and veils they caused a riot of joy among all present, especially with their hip movements! They also perfected many different group movements to sustained applause and laughter.
The programme concluded with a Holiday Song with our four youngest boys dancing in their new bright holiday wear of matching shirts and shorts. The boys entered into the movements with two ‘ladies’ from the Middle East ensemble, holding the group together.
At noon a lunch of beef and rice with a small pasta entre was served for all. This year we had a greater number of parents and grandparent guardians here joining their children and staying a few days. At 2pm on Wednesday, the first group of students left for the provinces for the six weeks Pchum Ben holidays.
Four of our Grade 6 students will not return in late October, three will attend local high schools near their families which is a priority and one student will undertake vocational skills training. We wish each of these students every success in the future and let them know that they will be welcome visitors to LaValla if an opportunity arises.
