PNKA is recognised locally as an effective, well networked NGO in Kampong Chhnang and Kampong Speu provinces, with integrity in responding to the needs of the local people since it was established 23 years ago. The organisation was initially founded with a focus on children who live remotely, especially girls, and their need to access education to improve their development outcomes.Since this time
, PNKA has benefitted from stable leadership, with some founding members still active as board members and attracts ongoing international donor support. The capacity of PNKA has grown beyond education to include livelihoods, natural resource management, primary health, and social protection as approaches to sustainable development that enables the community to confidently make their own decisions. In a constrained funding environment PNKA has been able to maintain its mission. Interviews with stakeholders including donors, staff, local authorities and beneficiaries revealed the existing capacity of PNKA is appreciated, by vulnerable small-holder producers in their target area coping with a challenging situation. The potential for PNKA to strengthen its existing activities and enhance the benefits to the community is recognised by several donors, who express an intention to have an ongoing relationship with PNKA. While some beneficiaries expressed frustration about the challenges faced by transitioning from aid to market-based approaches, participation in these initiatives is strong and they are have shown to have impact.
