We regularly have stalls in our local community, raffles and any other brain wave ideas we have to raise funds to support The project called, “Khmeng Onka Cambodia Care Leaver Network”, aims to build a network of counselling, encouragement, mentoring and support, for all young people who have been, or are still living in an institution, or who have been separated from their families and are preparing to return to the community. The network will address the issues and challenges facing care leavers and to advocate for better guidelines to prepare and support young people transitioning out of care. The aim of the network is to ensure care leavers know their rights, have a voice and receive training and skills to help them develop and prosper in their lives. We want them to use their life experiences to build their resilience and self-reliance and to empower other care leavers to move on and live the best life they can have in real society. You may not know, In Cambodia, young people who used to live in institutional care, and have returned to their families or who live independently are one of the most vulnerable groups in society and are highly disadvantaged in comparison to their peers. They often feel lonely and isolated, as well as potentially being abandoned again upon arrival in their communities. They are often discriminated against and lack training and life skills to operate in the real world. They have difficulty returning to live in the communities and fitting into society as they have been living in institutional care their whole lives. They are also carrying all their problems, trauma and their unique life experiences back to their home and communities, making them more susceptible to drug and alcohol abuse, falling into prostitution and crime and taking their own life. The project will focus on the following objectives. A network of engaged care leavers is established to provide support, mentoring, counselling and give a collective voice to marginalized youth. Care leavers are provided with the life skills, knowledge and training to enable them to become self-reliant and fully integrated into communities. This will include technical skills such as vocational training, employment assistance and job placement. Care leavers voices and experiences are utilized to advocate for care reform. We are an orphanage survival, and now a care leaver and we want to help other care leavers in Cambodia get all the support they needed.
