Independence: Step by Step

Independence: Step by Step Independence: Step by Step, will teach academic and functional skills to young people with autism.

Independence: Step by Step is an ambitious, new, educational project by the public association of parents of children with autism, Hand in Hand () in Kyrgyzstan. These skills will be targeted through vocational pathways, which have been designed to be natural and realistic. Learners will acquire skills by doing and will be supported to access employment opportunities, contribute to their

community and live as independently as possible. Specialist staff will teach independent living skills as well as academic and functional skills through four vocational pathways: catering, retail, office skills and horticulture. Older students will gain experience in enterprises connected with the different vocational pathways. These enterprises will form a recognised brand promoting the abilities of our learners, and enabling us to re-invest in the programme through the sale of goods and services. Additionally, Hand in Hand will create and maintain links with local businesses which are willing to provide work placements for older students. Hand in Hand will also create a best-practice model for supporting people with autism in the workplace.
