Hadithi Hangout is back with Mathare!

Last month, we opened this powerful book by Mathare resident Gathanga Ndung’u, uncovering how a quarry that literally built Nairobi grew into a bold centre of anti-oppression resistance.

This April, we dive deeper. We’ll explore how the first two post-colonial regimes betrayed Mathare, how this Nairobi settlement was nearly destroyed, and how the legendary Nyakinyua Dancers fought to protect their home.

Meet DJ Mixanthrope aka Boris Paillard — a French DJ, music journalist and curator bringing unique musical knowledge to Nairobi 🌍

Since 2017, he has curated in Berlin — a theme-driven party celebrating old and contemporary African and Afro-diasporic music beyond the mainstream. Forget Afrobeats and Amapiano. And think of pop bangers from lesser-known regions such as Seychelles, Madagascar, and Central African Republic 🎶

Beyond the decks, Boris is a respected freelance journalist, with bylines in Pan African Music, Afrique XXI and Afropop Worldwide. This April, he’ll be in Kenya researching Maasai and Samburu pop music for upcoming features in The Guardian and Songlines ✍🏾

But before that, we’re honoured to host the first Nairobi edition of African Beats & Pieces. Expect rare gems, deep cuts and delightful discoveries in alternative African music. Where education meets entertainment, and the dancefloor becomes a classroom 💃🏾
